Task 2

Read the text about William Shakespeare. Then read the statements below and decide
whether they are True (T) or False (F). Circle the right answer. One example is given.

The Mystery of William Shakespeare

Shakespeare has been described as a genius, the greatest dramatist and poet of all time, and yet very little
is known about him.
The only real facts are these:
William Shakespeare was born on April 23rd 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, a small town in the
centre of England.
His father and mother were illiterate farming people. They did not know how to read or write.
In 1582, Shakespeare married a woman called Anne Hathaway. They had three children who also
grew up illiterate.
In the following 14 years, many plays were performed under Shakespeares name.
In 1610 Shakespeare returned to Stratford, his native town, after having spent many years in
London.
Shakespeares writings are admired everywhere for their intelligence, beauty and humanity. So how was it
that this simple countryman was able to write such amazing poetry? How did someone with no apparent
education manage to produce thirty-six tragedies and comedies and over 127 poems? In his will*,
Shakespeare left no books or letters and didnt mention any plays or poems. Is it possible that the plays
were written by someone else?
Queen Elizabeth ruled England in Shakespeares times. The Queen had an adviser called Bacon. Bacon
was famous throughout Europe for his great intellect and learning. He also came from an important
aristocratic family. In many of his plays Shakespeare describes the lives of aristocracy and the court. Its
difficult to explain how Shakespeare knew about all this. Can it be possible that Bacon was using
Shakespeares name? The question is: Why would Bacon hide himself? Why would he not show his name?
It was a time of great political uncertainty and people were killed for their views and ideas. So it is
possible that Bacon used Shakespeare as a kind of mask, behind which he could express and promote his
ideas without fear of being punished.

Task 3

Read the text about the secrets of sleep. Then match the headings (A-H) with the

paragraphs (1-6). There is one extra heading which you do not need to use.
One example is given.
A

The stages of deep sleep

Reasons for bad sleep

Sleeping lightly

The stage of dreams

Doctors study sleep

How to sleep well

Sleep is not important

Some people worry about sleep

What happens when you sleep?

0. E
Many people think that nothing happens when you sleep. But doctors who have studied sleep for
many years, think that a lot happens when people sleep.
1.
Doctors say that there are five main kinds, or stages, of sleep. People may go through each stage
about every 90 minutes. During the first two stages you sleep very lightly. If someone calls you or
puts a hand on you, you wake up quickly. Your body rests quietly. You breathe more slowly than
when you are awake. Your heart beats slowly.
2.
During stages three and four, you sleep deeply. If someone puts a hand on you, you dont wake
up. Your heart beats more slowly than in stages one or two. You dont hear sounds and you dont
feel anything. Lights dont wake you up.
3.
The last stage of sleep is called Rapid Eye Movement or REM. During REM sleep, you breathe
faster, and your heart beats faster than in the first four stages. Your eyes move under your eyelids.
All of this happens because you are dreaming. Doctors say that everyone dreams. Some dreams
are short, some are long. Some people are good at remembering their dreams, others forget theirs.
4.
For some people, 4-5 hours sleep a night is enough to get enough rest. Others may need 12 hours
of sleep. Americans worry a lot about sleep. They spend at least 2.5 million dollars a year on
sleeping pills. Many people do not know why they have difficulty sleeping. They take special
pills to help them sleep. Sleeping pills may help you fall asleep, but when you wake up the next
morning you dont feel rested.
5.
Our living habits also affect our sleep. Busy people who are under stress during the day and get
tired at their jobs may not be able to calm down and fall asleep at night. Eating just before going
to bed may also keep you awake at night.
6

6.
Doctors say that you will sleep more easily if your bedroom is used only for sleep. You shouldnt turn
your bedroom into a room for meeting people, for watching TV, or for exercising. You should also
establish a regular sleeping schedule. Try to go to bed at the same time every night and get up at the
same time every morning. And if all this does not work, try counting sheep!
