The Education Undergraduate Society affanges and provides Professional Development
workshops for education students at the University of Lethbridge. This letter is written at the
request of Jo-Anna Meurs who attended the following seminars during the months of
January and February of20l6z

Amy Bright: "New YA Literature for Students and Teachers: Coming Soon in 2016,.."
Incorporating literature in higher grades is very dfficult to many teachers. In this session Amy will
provide an overview of important YA writers and their upcoming publications in 2016. She will then
highlight authors who boolcs are already known and used by students and teachers in middle and high
school, and provide supporting resourcesfor sharing their texts. A sample of new titles se will discuss
include John Corey Whaley's Highly Illogical Behavior, Emery Lord's When IAe Collided, and Matthew
Quick's Every Exquisite Thing.

Broc Higginson: "Montessori Schools"


Come and hear from a local principle that leads Fleetwood-Bawden school here in Lethbridge.
Fleetwood-Bawden is a Montessori school and in this session he will introduce you to what makes this
type of school unique. Come and see if this type of schoolfits your skills and professional endeavors.
Corey Makoloski: "Introverts and Anxiety in a nutshell"
A two-part presentation - the first part will deal with 'the shy teacher'. Looking at some activities that
could be helpful in new situations and new classrooms.
A colleague of Corey's will be also be jofning him, another ernployee of UolL who received her Master of
Social Work, Callista Chasse, who will be speaking about anxiety andways to help reduce it.
Amy von Ileyking: "Teaching in Faith-based Schools in Alberta"
Alberta's education system olfers a range offully publicly-funded and private faith-based school options
for our students. This session will examinefaith-based schooling in Albertafrom the perspective of those
who may be interested in teaching in these contexts. It will also share the results of theJirst research
study offaith-based schools in Canada and their effectiveness in terms of graduates' academic
achievements and their engagement in civic life.
Sharon Mezei: "Getting Ready for a Job: Contracts and More"
This session will be hosted by the Associate Superintendent and Hurnan Resources for the Lethbridge
district 51 School Division. The session will deal with contracts and other important documents and
lcnowledge you will need when lookingfor a job post-graduation.

Nancy Grigg: '3Baby Steps: UDL and Differentiated Instruction in Middle/High School"
In every classroom in Alberta, teachers confront a diverse population of students with widely dffirent
learningneeds. We lcnown that Universal Designfor Learning (UDL) and dilferentiation instruction
(DI) can help us provide a variety of learning optionsfor students -- but where to start? In this
worlahop, we will discuss some baby steps that you can take to implement UDL and DI inyour planning
for PSII practica.
