This was my chosen image for my magazine cover.

I liked this
image as it showed direct mode of address and would make
the magazine more personal and eye catching.
The two drum sticks stand out and relate the magazine to the
rock genre. The way the hand is reaching out will show the
artist almost reaching out to fans.
I decided to use this image instead of one with the shallow
depth of field as then you can see the artists face.

1) I selected the whole of this image then created a

new image and zoomed in.
I wanted to get the full effect of the shallower depth of
field and the cross with the drumsticks.

2) This is where I decided to zoom into with the model on

my image. This gives me enough room for details like a
masthead and cover lines whilst also being attractive and
eye catching. The cross shows that rock is almost a taboo
subject and makes it seem like it is explicit. This makes
the magazine and genre seem exciting.
I made sure photoshop was in an A4 format

3) To make my image more life like I had to change the colours, brightness
and contrast.
I did this by adding adjustment layers and using curves and also
brightness/contrast. By using these things I will make the model look more
real on the front cover. Making the picture darker also relates it more to my
chosen genre of rock and therefore the audience will identify with it more.

4) I used the magic select tool and went around the original
image. I then made the selected part into a separate layer. I
did this because I wanted to fade out the background of the
original picture to a white but still wanted to keep the original
colours of the photo.

5) Using the dodge tool, I went over the whole of

the original image to gain more of a white
background. When the layers will be put
together, I will still have the colours from the
original photos yet a cleaner feel.

6) When I put these layers together I noticed that I had not done a
very clean job with the selection tool for my layer over the top.
There were areas which showed the layer underneath and were
different colours consequently. To fix this I made a new layer which
was a copy of the original picture, removed the background using
the eraser tool and then burned the image to make it match layer 2.
I also removed part of the hair as it stood out too much and I could
not get it to blend into the photo.

Layer by itself

7) I used the blur tool to go around the edge of the model and make sure he was
properly blended into the background and didnt stand out too much. This step is
especially important when you have lots of layers in a photograph
The sharpen tool was used on the face around the beanie and hair and on the hands.
This made the features stand out more which in turn will make them stand out on the
front cover of the magazine and make it more appealing to readers.

8) I decided that I wanted to change the image to

black and white (like in my theme ideas) but still
have the impact of the red beanie. The red would
also allow me to have colour within my magazine
design and it would appear striking on the page.
Firstly I made am adjustment layer for hue and
saturation. I lowered the saturation of the photo
until it became black and white.
I then had to find a way of getting the red in the
beanie back.
To do this I used the quick selection tool and
selected the whole of the photo. I created little
sections where the beanie was showing using the
negative selection tool. Then by right clicking,
inversed them. This gave me the red colour.
I used the dodge tool to make the background
lighter and less yellow

9) I used photoshop to create a header for my

magazine. I used some font I found on the
internet, arranged it into the name of my
magazine and then erased the background
using the magic background tool.
