LESSON TITLE: Intro to 3D Printing

GRADE LEVEL
AND CLASS SIZE

High School
15 students

OVERVIEW: Introducing 3D printing to our

artistic practice, creating 3D objects from
ideas in our heads

DURATION
EX. 3 45-minute class
meetings

RATIONALE
Why this lesson for these students at this time?

6 45 minute class
meetings

As technology extends and

expands in the art world, art
education must expand to meet
those needs. The art classroom is
the perfect place to introduce 3D
printing to students. It allows for
students to explore different
aspects of the technology that
they are interested in. High school
is the perfect age for this lesson in
that the students are old enough to
understand and manipulate 3D
printing software effectively. This
lesson will further promote a
relationship between art and
technology, expanding the
students level of skills in multiple
areas.

Lesson Overview:
This lesson is focused on the utilization of 3D printing in artistic
practices. Students will research the use of 3D printing in the art world
and do a small presentation of an artwork or artist that has involved 3D
printing in some aspect of their work. Students will be introduced to
Tinkercad online 3D printing software and will learn the basics of
creating objects on the software. Students will go through a process of
prototyping to perfect their designs and execute their desired outcome.
This lesson helps further our theme of utilizing technology in the art
classroom. 3D printing can be used in many different ways and
students will be able to explore the areas of 3D printing that interest
them.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Include NCAS or Pennsylvania State standards referenced by level with each objective

1. Students will print an original design using a 3D printer.

Standard 9.1.12.J : Analyze and evaluate the use of traditional and
contemporary technologies for producing, preforming, exhibiting
works in the arts or the works of others.
Standard 9.1.12.H : Incorporate the effective and safe use of
materials, equipment, and tools into the production of works in the
arts at work and performance spaces.
2. Students will gain a basic knowledge of 3D CAD software
Standard 9.1.12.J : Analyze and evaluate the use of traditional and
contemporary technologies for producing, preforming, exhibiting
works in the arts or the works of others.
Standard 9.1.12.C : Integrate and apply advanced vocabulary to the
arts forms
3. Students will reflect on the process of trial and error and the
differences in the outcomes of different prototypes
Standard 9.1.12.G : Analyze the effect of rehearsal and practice
sessions
4. Students will research one artist who utilizes 3D printing
Standard 9.1.12.F : Analyze works of arts influenced by experiences or
historical and cultural events through production, performance, or
exhibition.
