OVIT ZRt.
OVIT ZRt. is a member of the MVM Group, and a company with a great tradition and the most
extensive construction and installation portfolio in the Hungarian energy industry. It has been
building, maintaining and developing high-voltage transmission lines and transformer stations
for over six decades. The companys core activities are primarily associated with the Hungarian transmission system and power stations, and it also regularly engages in construction,
maintenance, refurbishment and development work for electricity suppliers and distributors,
industrial power consumers and foreign clients.
OVIT ZRts operations span the whole country with sites in several regions of Hungary and
more than 1500 employees. The company carries out work and wide-ranging, technically sophisticated projects in a fully market-oriented system.

The creation of the Production Directorate involved the reorganisation of the former Steel
Structures Business Management. With the acceleration of the market gain of the steel structures business in the countries of the European Union, development of this key area became
a top priority, necessitating the creation of new organisational units that are better adjusted
to and supporting the production processes.

Manufacturing profile
Our core activity is the fabrication and surface treatment of custom and small- and largeseries screwed and welded steel structures. Our key products include medium-voltage (20 kV
75 kV) and high-voltage (110 kV750 kV) power transmission line towers, railway overhead
cable towers and girders, mobile phone network support towers (fabricated from triangular
or square section tubular or L-section steel), transformer station portal pylons, equipment
mounting structures and custom building frames and steel support structures. Currently we
produce an annual total of some 1215,000 tonnes of steel structures, most of them with
hot-dip galvanising, and there is an increasing demand for additional treatment, the so-called
duplex coating.

Sales
msz Nyrt.
Over time, domestic sales have gradually been supplemented by export activities, initially to
neighbouring countries, and now to the whole of Europe. Our steel structures have found their
way to clients as far away as Chile, South Africa and Australia. By virtue of our consistent
work, we are qualified suppliers to most power distribution companies and the largest railway
companies in Europe.

Stocks
To meet todays increasing demand for orders with short lead times, we hold 5-6000
tonnes of raw material in our warehouses, where two 20-tonne gantry cranes ensure the rapid
issue of materials.
17
Machining
Our preparation workshops have several CNC profile and sheet machining centres for cutting
and drilling components and applying ID marks. Our CNC machines are the most advanced and
efficient ones currently available, and we are constantly developing and making purchases to
maintain the technological standard we have achieved.
Welding
Welded structures are fabricated in a purpose-built welding shop, in a controlled environment
(automatic extraction and constant air exchange) and at high efficiency (separate assembly
and fabrication welding stations). All production halls have 1.510 tonne bridge cranes to facilitate movement of materials and semi-finished products within the shop.
18
19
Surface treatment
Surface treatment for steel structures above all means hot-dip galvanising, carried out by our
subcontractors according to BS, ISO and DASt standards and guidelines.
Many of our clients also require a secondary finish, the duplex coating applied in our own paint
shop. A good indication of the rising demand for duplex surface treatment is that 60-70% of
our products are supplied with it.
This kind of surface treatment is the most advanced and efficient procedure currently available. It consists of applying a secondary paint coating to hot-dip galvanised structures to
enhance their resistance to corrosion.
Another major benefit of the process is that it is environmentally friendly. The technology was
introduced at OVIT ZRt. Business Management of Steel Work in 2003. After conducting the
necessary assessments, the paint shop was designed and constructed for the purpose according to a foreign pattern.
Duplex surface treatment involves sand-blasting to remove 510 microns of the 70150-micron-thick hot-dip galvanised coating. This removes any contaminants and roughens the surface. Almost immediately afterwards, in a controlled atmospheric environment, water-based
paint specially developed and manufactured for this purpose is applied to the structure to
a thickness of 80120 microns.

Environment
In 2002, OVIT ZRt. launched its Environmental Management System, integrated with the Quality Management System, and had it certified under the standard EN ISO 14001. It has been
running ever since as part of the Integrated System.
In line with the standard, OVIT ZRt. has an environmental strategy in place containing its
environmental protection policies for operations and products. A key priority is keeping track
of environmental legislation and meeting relevant statutory obligations, and complying with
environmental requirements.
29
Quality
In an effort to maximise the efficiency of operations, the Company focuses on performing
high-standard quality control, and has been operating an ISO 9001 quality management system from the beginning. As a result of quality management, processes have become transparent and employees work traceable.
Raw materials are regularly subjected to dimensional checks and mechanical tests in the plant.
The plant has its own laboratory, where qualified staff carries out failure tests, impact and
bending tests and hardness measurements using calibrated instruments. We also have regular
mechanical and chemical tests carried out by an independent laboratory.
The rules for welding are fully observed in the plant. Welding is carried out responsibly by
properly qualified staff, in strict compliance with HSE requirements.
The quality of galvanised, painted and duplex surfaces is also continuously checked. This involves measuring the coating thickness and monitoring every step of the coating process to
ensure that the surface treatment meets the highest quality requirements.
These checks and tests ensure that the products we manufacture fully comply with clients
demands.

Besides manufacturing, the plant also performs the detailed design of the various devices, the
technical preparation for manufacturing, the elaboration of the manufacturing technology and
the technical supervision of the manufacturing process.
The plant also manufactures steel structures for the furnaces and pressure vessels which
constitute its core profile.
Steel structure products:

plating, pipe holders, etc.)
steel structures for pressure vessels (suspensions, saddles, skirt roofs, elevating
devices, podiums, service walkways, etc.)
32
The plant has obtained the EN ISO 3834-2 certificate of compliance for the manufacture of
welded steel structures. The weld joints of the steel structures are examined using non-destructive X-ray and ultrasound testing as well as weld crack detections.
The steel structures mainly use unalloyed or low-alloy plate and profile materials with widths
between 5 mm and 50 mm.
The plant is equipped with a mobile pre-heating device and a gas oven with an input size of
3x3x12 m and a bottom load capacity of 30 tonnes for the pre-heating and heat treatment of
the thicker (3035 mm wall-width) support structures.
The highly accurate machining of the steel structures is performed using digitally controlled
machining centres and a 3000 mm vertical mill.
The plant is equipped with coat and paint diffusers to ensure the surface treatment and protection of the steel structures.
The only restrictions on the dimensions and weight of the products that can be sent as a single
shipment are road and rail transportability limits.
