Report of Hazards in the Welding Work for Platform

Fabrication Section of Fabrication Industry

MOHD FIKRY BIN ABD RAHMAN

INDEX NO : NS11789
IC : 900504095159

Introduction

Dynaciate Engineering Sdn Bhd Engineering and Fabrication

company
Dynaciates Hershey Eager project covered the piping and platform
fabrication and installation work. They also do the equipment
installation.
Work environment :

Exposure mainly to physical hazards such as, noisy work area, tripping hazards and etc
Other than that

Chemical hazards fumes and dust from welding work and etc.
Electrical - electrocution

Work Flowchart

Objective
Identify the safety and health hazards on welding for platform fabrication
work.

Evaluate and assessing the identified hazard.

Suggest control measure and action to be taken that are suitable and
practicable to be applied based on hierarchy of control.

Propose a review system for continuous improvement of safety and

health at the work place for all suggested control measure.

Methodology
There 4 method used to identify hazard:

Observation and monitoring

Workplace inspection
Reviewing Job Safety Analysis (JSA)

Result and Discussion

From the finding, there are 6 identified hazards (4 Safety Hazard and 2
Health Hazard)

Identified Safety Hazard :

Hazards

Welding sparks - (fire at workplace)

Touching damaged insulation wire - (Electrocution)
Hot welded part (Skin burn)
Tangled wire on the floor - (Tripping)

Identified Health Hazard :

Hazards

Welding fume and gases - (Lung Diseases)

Direct welding arc ray (Damaged Retina)

SAFETY HAZARD RECOMMENDATION

Risk Control
Elimination

Recommendation :

Substitution

There is no possible way to eliminate welding sparks in those fabrication work when using SMAW
type.
No effective substitution available to recommend

Engineering control

Administrative control

Personnel protective
equipment

Build the zinc guarding or cover welding area with the fire retardant curtain. This will help to
isolate the welding area, and reduce the possibility of the nearest material ignited from the
welding sparks. This is cheaper yet effective control measure. (refer Appendix 12)
Fire extinguisher training. This will improve their skills in handling fire emergency event,
and have adequate skill in fighting the fire at its initial stage.
Fire extinguisher stand and signage. The stand will to hang the fire extinguisher, and
signage will be put to locate the fire extinguisher easily. (Previously put on the ground)
Fire drill training. Those can help minimize the fatality and injury during the real fire event by
training the proper emergency procedure.
Safe welding training. Increase the welders safety skills and knowledge in handling welding
work.
Fire awareness programme. Worker will be exposure about the danger of fire, and how it can
be prevented from happening.
Head strap welding face shield. Improve the current hand hold welding face shield
Leather apron

Recommendation :
There is no possible way to eliminate welding fume in those fabrication work when using SMAW type.
No effective substitution available to recommend
Good long term planning. Proposed using robotic welding for high scale, fast, and lesser workers
involvement inhaling and expose to fumes. It will be practicable for high scale production in the
future. (refer Appendix 12)
A cheaper option is to have freely movable hoods or ducts are intended to be placed by the
welder as near as practicable to the work being welded. (refer Appendix 12)
Reduce the welding current to the lowest possible. By reducing the current, the fumes release are
lesser. This can also prevent the burning the weld material, thus increase fumes release.
Welding surfaces should be cleaned of any coating. The coating substance can cause toxic
gasses. The current method of using grinding as the method of removing the coating can be replaced
by using cleaning solvent. The recommended solvent is the water-based, environmental friendly
coating removal (refer Appendix12). Using grinding to remove coating also cause the coating substance
becoming dust and dangerous when inhale.
Safe welding training. Increase the welders safety skills and knowledge in handling welding work.
Health awareness programme. Do the health campaign, and keep the worker alert about the
danger or welding fumes and how they can minimize the effect.
Limit the worker exposure period. Have the schedule of work and rest time and proposed
rotating of work. Make sure the worker no workers are forced to work beyond the exposure limit.
Proposed annual medical surveillance to monitor workers health status. The result will reflect the

effectiveness of the control measure

Respirator, N95 mask. Effectively filter harmful particle range from 0.1 to 0.3 micron

PROPOSED REVIEW PLAN PROGRAM

To monitor effectiveness - Control measure must be review from time to time

Most important the introduce CM must not hinder work process and introduce new hazards
Effective of measure through :
Site monitoring and observation
Medical surveillance program
Observation on PPE
Observation on accident and incident records.
Equipment maintenance maintenance the equipment used for CM Engineering control.
Other review plan
Continues workplace inspection Safety personnel
Continuous interview session
Review on the continuous training program
