Women in Sport
The first ancient Olympic Games date back
to 776 BC but in those days only men could
compete. Married women were not allowed
to take part in the games. or even to watch
5 them , Only single women could attend the
competition. Some women did not accept
this and dressed up as men to go to the
games.
Although females couldn't compete in
10 the ancient Olympic Games, they had their
own opportunities for sporting competition.
The Herean Games were for female athletes.
They took place every four years to honour
the goddess Hera. wife of Zeus.
15
The first modem Olympic Games were
in 1896 in Athens. Fourteen nations took
part in fortythree events with 241 athletes
- 241 men and no women. Women made
their first appearance in the modem games
20 four years later in Paris. There were tWenty
two female competitors. Charlotte Cooper,
a British tennis player, became the first
woman to win an Olympic gold medaL

Before I arrived here, I knew a litlle about the big cities, but not much about the country itself.
It's actually the sixth largest country in the world. The weather and scenery change from
region to region . They have more than 3,000 hours of sunshine a year here, but I've been
skiing in the south-east of the country in winter.
Coming from Europe, I miss the very old cities and buildings, but the history and culture are
still very interesting here. The native people represent one of the oldest cultures in the world .
They have always had a great respect for the environment and they have produced art with
CIOSQ links to thQ land.
Although it isn't the capital, I really like this city. My favourite landmark is the famo4s bridge.
It takes ten years and 30,000 litres of paint to cover it and the painting never stops! You can
also climb the bridge to get an incredible view of the harbour. I haven't done it yet. Just near
the bridge 10 the opera houoe with ito incredible design, Ulo the 'home of the arts' - I've already
