E2:3 The World of Science
Humans are limited to five senses which provide a well-rounded but sufficient perception
enough to understand the world. The brain is what takes into account all of the information
collected in the environment and challenges ideas by reasoning, questioning, and forming
opinions. These views and beliefs can cause conflict amongst people of opposing views or
appease a portion of the population that shares a similar idea. Every day, people of diverse
cultures and beliefs work together to resolve issues around the globe and make crucial decisions
within the nations. Although many opinions and beliefs exist that appear to the majority of a
given society, people are able to create a composite reality where everyone interacts
productively together in a professional science-influenced environment and work towards
completing a task, such as a research project, with one another to ultimately find a result that
affects the world in various ways that values and considers ideas of every member of the
research team.
Research projects are launched and conducted all over the world and sometimes require
interracial collaboration in order to successfully reach optimal results. There are various ways to
belong in a nation and contribute to a society with such a diverse population. More specifically,
in America a pair of sisters from India believe that there are two ways for forgiveness to belong
in the country legally with legal papers and proof of documentation for a stable residence or
citizenship, and to fit in with society that controls most of the ways people live in the U.S.

Shirvan 2
People have learned to acknowledge ones differences and to embrace their strengths as well as
their weaknesses in order to improve a society. Even though they were legally qualified and
received education to have appropriate credentials for their career, it wasnt satisfying. Bharati
married someone out of her culture and felt wanted in Canada, but she felt more at home in the
U.S. (Mukherjee). The country strongly encouraged temporary residents to make a commitment
and become a citizen or to leave the country altogether. Overlooking the difficult decision to
choose where to establish yourself, despite variations in background and citizenship, all people
have the opportunity to thrive in the work force and make a difference in his/ her profession. But,
in collaborative research groups, there are endless ways to benefit the team. Peoples opinions
sway beliefs and contribute to stereotypes and other forms of discrimination which stem from
various perceptions of the world, morality, standards, and expectations. There is pressure on
every individual to deliver the work that theyre expected to provide in the research atmosphere,
but peoples skin color, religion, and personal views on moral issues are respected and overcome
so that every person on the team can use his or her knowledge and skills without any judgments
other than that of her/his work. The research team consists of educated scientists who are all
capable of creating something powerful and beneficial for humanity. Mira was a legal resident
and successful child educator, but felt that the legal policies and regulations pressuring to put her
citizenship before her impactful career that shes worked well for. Everything that the
government enforces doesnt control the peoples beliefs of global views on certain issues.
Fellow coworkers on a research team have successfully acknowledged and surpassed any
religious and cultural boundaries that may prevent the best results in research; the only thing that
creates a barrier in science and research amongst a team is being unable to effectively
communicate. Science is empirical which means it can be observed. The purpose of science is to

Shirvan 3
provide a large set of data and theories, not to prove things. Therefore, it could be an alternative
source of explanation and reason for anyone who doesnt have a religion, but it doesnt suggest
that you change your beliefs, it may challenge previous beliefs, but science isnt biased or
subjective. The most educated and qualified individual may not be able to work best in a
collaborative environment with a research team to help produce advanced technology. Many
successful researchers that participate in research projects find that their attitude towards life will
bring happiness. Just like Sisyphus, they are able to overcome many obstacles and come up with
a living masterpiece constantly altered and shaped with the intention of expanding current
technology. The only obstacle that stands in their way besides the barriers of morality and
science is the art of communication. It doesnt always work, but the failures of a launch dont
stop the research team from creating another model and gaining satisfaction from their
perseverance and determination to make something even better and adapt to new forms of
technology as they rebuild what hadnt worked so nicely. These researchers will face having to
work in the darkness symbolically and/or physically until the goals of the work are achieved. A
lot of times, there is a lack of support or belief in an idea, but the individuals positivity and
persistence can result in success. The group research projects of todays world can relate to
Sisyphus reaction to the supposed punishment, There is no sun without the shadow, and it is
essential to know the night. The absurd man says yes and his efforts will henceforth be
unceasing (Camus). The environment of work may not be the most desirable one, but working
with what is given and being appreciative of what currently exists creates a powerful mindset.
All of the efforts of every member in the research program will benefit from their experience as
well as they will all see how their hard work and attitude can be extremely progressive in such a

Shirvan 4
unique environment such as a research team that is working diligently to be ahead of the game in
scientific advancements.
Depending on the situation people are put in, their opinions will change and have a
negative or positive effect when having to work with others, especially throughout attempts to
interpret the communication of others. In recent studies regarding personal beliefs that negatively
or positively affect people, researchers found that Prior work suggests that variations in selfimagery can influence the emotional interpretations people make about social
situations.inducing an inferential bias can change the content of self-related imagesduring
subsequent experience with ambiguous social situations(Hirsch et al). A person who is happy
and genuinely satisfied with his or her life will most likely project a positive attitude towards
others and not have such a biased or negative impression of others. Someone who is upset,
unhappy, and unsatisfied in his or her life will tend to bring negativity in the work space and
even cause distress within research groups. Optimism is key when working on research that is
cost effective and requires an advanced and qualified team to achieve success.
The research team, focusing on projects and collaborations, still faces challenges that not
only limit their perception but prevent people from productively working together. In the
research study referred by Charlotte R. Hirsch and others in their article Inducing an
Interpretation Bias Changes Self-Imagery: A Preliminary Investigation global managers were
asked to identify the most serious challenge in their field and responded that its the response
of global importance and difficulty of this challenge, researchers and managers have long sought
to provide advice on this potential impediment to international business by focusing largely on
ways to reduce "noise" in various global communication channels (Nardon et al). There is a lot
of noise including outside distractions, such as stereotypes and discrimination, that block the

Shirvan 5
true vision of success for all of humanity. However, the world of science and research learns to
value the researchers for their scientific contributions and intelligence rather than a physical
characteristic that has nothing to do with advancements in the field of science.
Properly and effectively communicating is always going to be an issue because
everyones perception is different and the degree of understanding fluctuates amongst different
people. Major companies and their scientific research and other contributions are responsible for
their contributions to society; it doesnt matter how advanced the corporation or project is,
challenges will make the process more difficult but not impossible. Unfortunately, an example of
miscommunication is the Mars Climate Orbiter that NASA labs had built recently incorporating
the work of scientists across the nation, but failing to convert the units from the Metric System to
the U.S. Standard System ended in an explosion that wasted $125 million simply because of an
error within the massive project (Lloyd). These simple but brutal mistakes help to ensure that
everything is properly communicated and evaluated every step of the way before its ready for an
official launch. Its difficult to avoid this problem and sometimes unable to clearly tell if the
SpaceX series of rockets will survive past the Earths surface until the space craft is actually sent,
but precaution could be taken to avoid using the same defective design, certain ineffective
materials, or other contributors to explosions such as the possibility that the pressure in the
liquid-oxygen tank could become too high near the upper stage of the rocket. The program is
constantly trying to improve its technology while continuing to research and analyze the data
received by the computers before the explosion to solve problems that prevent them from
successfully launching in the future.
In order to have a balance in the research project environment, everyone needs to
prioritize their attention to the work required for productivity and based on a realistic goal to

Shirvan 6
achieve proper results. A professional pick pocket, Apollo Robbins, entertained an audience for
TED Talks about The Art of Misdirection. In the videoit shows how focusing on one aspect
too much, limits exploration and expansion of knowledge and awareness. Paying attention to the
lesser important things than equally balancing issues that need to be resolved obscures our vision
and moves away from the central focus of the environment in which one operates. Its important
that researchers have a universal ideal and expectation from the project that theyre contributing
to. Its simple how people can deviate from the initial focus through con-artistry behavior which
shows how the senses can deceive us if they are not properly focused in the right places.
Without a proper mindset, no one will perform his/her task well or enjoy the pleasure of
delivering good quality assistance to the project and receiving the ultimate reward every time
advancements in technology and science are made. Scientists and researchers can relate to how
Sisyphus chooses to react to his punishment when the work on their project has failed to succeed
and requires a lot of strength and perseverance to rise from. All day and night, Sisyphus rolls the
rock up the hill until it falls and repeats this cycle. He views life in more ways than one linear
destination, and finds happiness within the seemingly uncomfortable fate hes forced to live with.
He doesnt need to search for happiness or light; he is perfectly fine with the darkness and
continues to have satisfaction in his life that the gods thought of as punishment. His efforts will
be unceasing since his absurd heroic behavior is optimistic no matter the circumstances. After
every cycle of moving the rock, the narrator says that, I leave Sisyphus at the foot of the
mountain! One always finds one's burden again....One must imagine Sisyphus happy (Camus).
He gains satisfaction every time the rock rolls to the foot of the mountain and he follows after it
to continue the cycle. People will argue that the satisfaction he gains is from something
meaningless, but Camus believes it is the opposite. He has the ability to determine his own fate

Shirvan 7
and how he chooses to perceive the things in his life. This attitude is extremely beneficial when
scientists and others come together to produce an outcome that improves peoples lives.
Researchers and others in projects work on failures and inaccuracies without viewing it
as punishment, but rather a reward that, in the end, people and science could benefit from data
collected from new discoveries. Failures arent obstacles; theyre more like stepping stones that
brings them one step closer to getting the right results and possibly discovering something
revolutionary. They not only discover and create important, revolutionary attributions for making
the world better, they create a new world where diverse people are able to work together to find
solutions for global issues. These researchers are able to create a composite reality that
acknowledges everyones differences and unites them in the name of science!
