A World Redrawn - Eisenstein and Brecht in Hollywood

Christine Burgin 2016 ISBN 9780977869688 Acqn 26296
Hb 20x25cm 152pp 132ills 70col 33.50
A World Redrawn is an exploration by the artist Zoe Beloff of Sergei Eisenstein and Bertolt
Brechts experiences in Hollywood in the 1930s and 40s, what their time in Hollywood meant to
them then and what it might mean to us now. Beloff focuses on two unrealized films written during
this time: Glass House by Eisenstein and A Model Family by Brecht.
The book reproduces many important and little-known documents from the period, including a
large selection of previously unpublished drawings by Eisenstein discovered by Beloff in the
Russian State Archive of Literature and Art in Moscow and facsimile reproductions of the writings
of Eisenstein and Brecht as they contemplate the politics and culture of Hollywood.
Beloff created three films in connection with this project and the book includes stills and
screenplays for these projects and links so that the films can be watched online. Two scholarly
essays have been commissioned for this project: an essay by Hannah Frank on the affinities of
American and Soviet animation during this period and a meditation on the role of laughter in the
work of Bertolt Brecht by the Walter Benjamin scholar Esther Leslie.

Nottingham Contemporary 2016 ISBN 9781907421112 Acqn 26896
Pb 16x24cm 96pp 43ills 30col 13.95
Marguerite Humeau has described herself as an Indiana Jones in Google times. The Londonbased French artist's work embarks on epic quests in time and space. FOXP2 is her first major
solo show in the UK. Humeau's new works grew out of conversations with zoologists and other
experts. One sound installation takes the form of a choir of 108 billion voices, re-enacting the
moment when a gene FOXP2 mutated, allowing our ancestors to develop language. This
leads on to what Humeau calls a biological showroom of elephants, engaged in an elaborate
mourning ritual. The installations take us back to the origins of life, while also imagining a future
without us.

Paula Rego - Paintings & Etchings From The 1980's

Marlborough Fine Art 2016 ISBN 9781909707337 Acqn 26946
Pb 24x27cm 40pp 34ills 15col 12.50
Marlborough Fine Art will present an exhibition of Paula Rego paintings from the 1980s at Frieze
Masters 2016.
Paula Rego draws widely from subjects including fairy tales and folk art, her experiences growing
up in Portugal under a fascist regime, and from her personal recollections of girlhood and
adolescence.
This exhibition focuses on important works from the Vivian Girls series inspired by the Outsider
artist, Henry Darger. The Vivian Girls were the heroines of Dargers thirteen-volume novel that
concerned the adventures of a group of girls living on a planet controlled by evil soldiers. The girls
consistently overcome the soldiers by playing pranks and tricks on them. The anarchic nature of
the subject is reflected in the broad range of colour and spontaneous, painterly work. Within each
scene, characters and conversations, ideas and incidents, all tumble over one another like folk
tales passed down through generations.

Hb 24x30cm 416pp 250col ills 52.95
This oeuvre catalogue presents a comprehensive overview of Hercules Segers, an artist born in
Haarlem and considered one of the most inspired, experimental, and original landscapists of the
Dutch Golden Age. Besides being a painter, he was an innovative printmaker whose etchings of
landscapes were often printed using coloured ink on coloured paper or cloth, hand-coloured and
often cropped to different sizes. Segers also made use of drypoint and a form of aquatint, as well
as other effects. Although his surviving paintings are rare, hundreds of prints make up a legacy
now compiled and published on the occasion of an exhibition at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
