The Vineland Rotary has hosted blood drives for 20 years. It joins several

Vineland Rotary Club Blood Drive organizer Ron McMahon presents

Rotarian Linda Foster with recognition for donating blood consistently since the Clubs first blood drive in January 1997.

hen the Rotary Club of Vineland hosted its quarterly blood drive on October 25, it marked the
conclusion of the clubs 20th year hosting blood
drives in cooperation with the American Red Cross. The
service club hosted its first blood drive in 1997. In the 20
years since the Rotary Club began sponsoring the donations,
the club now has held 68 blood drives. Because Rotary now
sponsors four blood drives every year at the Ramada Inn of
Vineland, many people return regularly to give four donations annually. Donors have included Rotarians, family
members and co-workers of Rotarians, and many persons
from Vineland and the surrounding communities.
We are so grateful for the continued support of the
Vineland Rotary Club over the past 20 years, said Beth
Toll, external communications manager for the Red Cross
Penn-Jersey Blood Services Region. Through their efforts,
more than 2,500 pints of blood have been collected.
According to American Red Cross statistics, in the PennJersey Region, on average, approximately 800 donations
are needed each day from area blood donors, helping to
ensure that blood products are available for patients in
more than 100 local hospitals, as well as about 2,600 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country.
Long-time Rotarian Ron McMahon, who once served as
a board member for the Cumberland County Chapter of
the American Red Cross, has organized all of the Vineland
Rotary Clubs blood drives. Its become a passion ever
since I was nominated by then-club president Charles
Parrish in 1997, McMahon said. After my donation on
October 25, Ive personally given blood 190 times.
McMahons family and friends have joined in over the
years as well. In fact, last year three generations of
McMahons participated in blood drives with Rons son
Scott and grandson Ryan having made donations.

wherever she goes. Lyrics hit her when she
least expects them to, and she must be prepared when they do.
Its nice to get all my feelings out on a
page, she said.
Sooy is a 20-year-old singer-songwriter
from Millville who released an original
Christmas song last week. The song, Red
Hot Holiday, is by Sooy and her producer,
Vineland-based Chris Orazi. Sooy describes
it as a brand new classic.
People will listen and think that they've
heard it all their lives, she said.
All the money generated from the song
will go to Celebrating Our Veterans, which
helps disadvantaged veterans.
Red Hot Holiday is her first single to
come out after her debut album.

To the Editor
As we enter the holiday season, I
encourage all to give something
that means something and help the
American Red Cross bring hope to
people in some of their darkest
hourssomeone who has lost
everything in a disaster, a hospital
patient who needs blood, or a military family facing an emergency.
Its a big job, and the Red Cross
depends on everyones support
during the holiday season and
throughout the year to be able to
help people in need. Visit redcross.org/gift to make a donation
for someone special in your life and
read stories about some of the people helped by the Red Cross. Your
gift will give support, strength and
hope to someone who needs it.
While we take time to celebrate
the holidays with our loved ones,
its important to remember the hospital patientsthe cancer, trauma
and surgical patients and so many
morewho depend on Red Cross
blood donors to help in their battle
back to good health. I ask all eligible donors to consider making an
appointment this holiday season to
help ensure blood is available for
patients in need. For eligibility
information or to schedule an
appointment, visit
redcrossblood.org, use the Red
Cross Blood Donor App or call 1800-RED CROSS.
With your help, the Red Cross
can give the gift warmth, shelter
and hope this holiday season and
all year long. Happy Holidays!

I News in Brief
Update on Verizon Copper
Line Service Quality Case
The New Jersey Board of Public
Utilities (Board) has appointed Board
President Richard S. Mroz to serve as
Presiding Commissioner in the case filed
by 16 southern New Jersey municipalities
and the County of Cumberland.
The Boards action comes as ongoing
settlement talks among the parties have
currently not reached a stipulation of settlement among the parties. The presiding
commissioner will rule on the motions,

issue a procedural schedule and preside

over any hearings.
On November 24, 2015, 16 southern New
Jersey municipalities and the County of
Cumberland filed a petition with the Board
alleging that Verizon has failed to properly
maintain its copper landline facilities. The
petition asserts that Verizon has failed to
comply with its obligations to maintain and
repair its services to ensure safe and satisfactory landline telephone and data transmission is provided throughout the service
territory covering those communities. In
addition, the petitioners contend that there
is a lack of measurable performance standards. Furthermore, the petitioners seek
reclassification of Verizons basic telephone

services as noncompetitive due to an

alleged lack of competition in those communities. Lastly, the petitioner alleges that
the company has violated N.J.S.A. 48:221.18(c) by misdirecting funds from its rate
regulated business to subsidize its competitive services.
Verizon filed a reply on January 19, 2016,
refuting the claims alleged in the petition.
The New Jersey League of Municipalities
and AARP submitted letters in support of
the petition on January 20 and January 25,
2016, respectively. Two public hearings
were held on August 4, 2016, in the City of
Estell Manor, at which approximately 200
people spoke; 151 written comments were
received thereafter.

On August 8, 2016, New Jersey Division

of Rate Counsel filed comments that supplemented public statements provided at
the public hearings. On August 31, 2016, the
petitioner filed a letter requesting that the
Board conduct evidentiary hearings. On
September 7, 2016, Rate Counsel filed comments requesting that the Board conduct a
full investigation and hold evidentiary
hearings.
On September 19, 2016, Verizon filed its
response that detailed steps taken to remedy the service quality issues and pledged to
continue its efforts by upgrading facilities.
As part of its response, Verizon offered a
plan to improve facilities to relieve DSL
congestion throughout Estell Manor,
Weymouth, Maurice River and other communities where lack of capacity is alleged;
install fiber optic cable in Lower Alloways
Creek; and continue copper infrastructure
maintenance and improvements.
On September 30, 2016, Rate Counsel
replied to Verizons submission seeking a
procedural schedule for the proposed work.
The petitioner responded on October 3,
2016, to the recent proposal filed by Verizon
and argued the plan is insufficient in
addressing the needs of the area and renewed
their request for evidentiary hearings.

The Vineland Historical and

Seventh Street will be closed to the public
for the month of January. The month-long
closing allows the Board of Trustees and
staff to attend to maintenance chores and
the installation of new exhibits.
The annual exhibit, open to the public
from February through December on
Saturdays, will be A Toy Story. It will feature everything from a 19th century homemade train to board games, books and more.
The Society also plans to begin installation of a new exhibit reflecting the lives of
the early Italian immigrants who first came
to Vineland in the 1870s. That exhibit will
be followed by the stories of other immigrant groups who later arrived here between
the late 19th and mid-20th centuries.

Zumoff lnspires Scarpa TEC Students

Philadelphia 76ers play-by-play announcer Marc
Zumoff had an exciting message for students at the
John F. Scarpa Technical Education Center of
Cumberland County: Hard work can make dreams
come true. The announcers recent visit to the Intro to
Media Production and Broadcasting freshman class
was thrilling for students planning to pursue sports
broadcasting and for those considering their options
within the field.
Zumoff got his start in radio news in Trenton and
Princeton, NJ. He has received 15 Mid-Atlantic Emmy Awards for best play-by-play
broadcaster and was the play-by-play announcer for the gold medalist U.S.
womens basketball team in the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics. He also coaches
aspiring broadcasters and offers career development.
Students in Scarpa TECs Communications Program focus on methods and
techniques for reporting, producing and delivering news programs and other digital
content via television and video/film media.

TEC students Devin Coia and Tabitha Gentiletti.

WOW Community
Gateway Community Action
Partnership, Inspira Health Network
and CompleteCare have collaborated
on a project that is sure to WOW the
community. The three organizations
each contributed $75,000 to purchase
a 30-foot, fully-equipped, state-of-theart mobile health and dental center.
The Wellness On Wheels, or WOW
mobile, is being built and delivered for area residents by spring 2017.
The vehicle will cost $225,000 and include a dental station and a full-service
health clinic and waiting area, enabling area residents to access care, as well as
obtain information and referrals for additional medical services, as needed, in one
location. The vehicle will travel to remote locations for care, as well as participate
in community health fairs and events.

A community event is being planned to kick-off the WOW mobile going into

I Jersey Reflections

{ BY VINCE FARINACCIO }

Songs of Old
Mumming, caroling and wassailing at winter solstice
are traditions thousands of years old.

ongs are an integral part of

Christmas season but before our
time they filled the celebrations of
the winter solstice in many
European countries, including England.
And its those older traditions that we still
see reflected in our own.
According to Songs for Winter Solstice:
Renewing Old Traditions by James Gilson
and Robert Barzan, Mumming, caroling
and wassailing at winter solstice are traditions thousands of years old. Mummers go
door-to-door wearing masks or costumes.
The original custom was to dress as an animal, probably a remnant of hunting or
totemic rituals. They sing songs, recite
poetry or perform skits, and most importantly, bring good luck to the household.
The visit is an important social occasion
which usually includes the eating and
drinking of special foods and beverages.
Mumming is derived from masked performers who date back to at least 1296 and
a Christmas celebration for Edward Is
daughters marriage. Of course, this region
is familiar with Philadelphias annual
Mummers Parade on New Years Day, a
tradition that can be traced back to the 17th
century and a blend of various cultures that
include Swedish and Finnish along with
British.
Carolers once traveled house-to-house
singing what are referred to as holly and
ivy songs that had been part of the fertility
dances that accompanied the earliest caroling. Gilson and Barzen explain, In the
early days of the Christian era, such activities, especially mumming, were forbidden
under pain of excommunication. In order
to continue the tradition, the costumes
were given up and many of the winter solstice songs were Christianized. The customs survived in their altered forms and
they were brought over to North America
by the colonists, where the winter solstice
tradition of the house-to-house visits
accompanied by masks and singing already
existed in various Native American tribes.
The tradition of wassailing involved,
according to Gilson and Barzan, bowls of
ale or cider [that] were carried through the
orchards and to each house in the village.
In the cider-producing region of West
England, the practice served as a ritual to
grant orchards a productive upcoming sea-

son. John Matthews, in his book The

Winter Solstice: The Sacred Traditions of
Christmas, explains that this rite involved a
ceremony in which town representatives
met with the orchard owner to select the
largest tree and then wassailed the tree by
pouring cider on its roots and placing
pieces of cake or toasted bread soaked in
cider in the branches.
Songs for Winter Solstice says the term
wassail comes from waes hael, which
means be of good health in Old English,
referring to the toast drunk for each tree
and at each household. And some wassailing songs survive today, giving us a better
understanding of the tradition.
During the medieval times, the practice
of wassailing was usually conducted on
Twelfth Night, either January 5 or 6, as a
way of circumventing begging. The Lord of
the manor would be visited by peasants,
who provided song, and he, in turn, would
provide them with food and drink. An
exchange would be completed when the
peasants offered blessings and good wishes
to their host. One of the most popular
songs of this tradition, Here We Go a
Wassailing, preserves such a blessing:
Love and joy come to you, and to you your
wassail too; and God bless you and send
you a Happy New Year.
The songs of the British folk tradition
that celebrate the winter solstice survive
today, thanks to such musical acts as the
Watersons, Steeleye Span, St. Agnes
Fountain and the Albion Band, and their
recordings are well worth the effort of
tracking down. For those who do, theres a
discovery waiting to be made in the rich
cultural history of the season in songs like
The King, recorded in an acapella performance on Steeleyes Please to See the
King album, with its observation of an early
tradition in which a caged wren, symbolic
of the king, was carried through a village to
welcome the New Year.
And check out the song In the Bleak
Midwinter, one of the loveliest tunes related to Christmas or the winter season. The
words are by poet Christina Rossetti and
the music by classical composer Gustav
Holst. Its an unlikely collaboration, but the
result is a tenderly moving composition.
Happy Holidays! I

The Bridgeton Amish Market offers a variety
of gifts for that special someone. One such gift
idea youll find at the Market is offered by Balic
Winery, with its selection of winesone featured
wine being Huckleberry, a wild berry wine.
Prices vary, under $50.
According to Balic literature, blackberries
have never been grown commercially and are
naturally organic. Growing wild in the northwestern U.S., local pickers compete with bears for
the crop. During World War II, British pilots ate
huckleberries before night flights to enhance
their vision.
Balic Winery is producing
pure huckleberry wine in limited quatities and cannot
guarantee availability, as they
are dependent on the abundance of the berries. But no
worries, as youll find a variety of other Balic wines for
your gift bags and holiday
festivities.

Sooy also credits her great grandmother

for encouraging her. As a child, Sooy sang
songs for her great grandmother, who
would clap along. Thats definitely a lot of
why Im here today, Sooy said. Because
of her.
A student of the Millville Public School
District, Sooys education contributed to
her musical talent. From Holly Heights
Elementary through Lakeside Middle
School, she sang in choir.
In sixth grade, she recorded music in a
studio for the first time. Her Holly Heights
music teacher was friends with Orazi, who
needed voices for a recording of childrens
song Buckle Up For Safety. Sooy was recommended by her teacher to Orazi, who
would produce Catch Me a decade later.
But even up-and-coming performer
Sooy was a victim of school bullies. A lot
of people would laugh at me in middle
school because I would sing all the time,
Sooy recalled. Some students created a
Facebook page aimed at Sooy titled, Why
are you taking choir seriously? Its not
American Idol.
Sooy later auditioned for American
Idol, Americas Got Talent, and The Voice,
but didnt make it past auditions. However,
Sooy didnt let rejection or bullying discourage her.
At Millville Senior High School, Sooy
joined jazz band and madrigals (afterschool choir).
Jazz band was especially difficult for
me. I was raised mostly playing classical,
Sooy explained. It was her first time playing in a band with other people, and she
learned a variety of chords that now help
her to keep her own music fresh.
Sooy graduated high school in 2014 and
began studying musical theatre performance at the Westminster College of the
Arts of Rider University. Outside of class,
Sooy continues to write songs. Upon her
anticipated graduation in 2018, she plans
to move to New York and audition for
everything.
She will go very far in her career,
DiLeo said. I

The album, Catch Me, debuted in

October after two years of writing and
recording. The collection of songs was
supposed to be an EP, but eventually the
project turned into an 11-song album.
It hasnt really hit me yet, Sooy said
about releasing Catch Me. Everybodys
like, Congrats on the new album! and Im
like, Thanks, I forgot I wrote it.
Sooy cites Sarah Bareilles, Ingrid
Michaelson and Mary Lambert as her
songwriting inspirations. Their influences
are audible on Catch Me.
The way that Mary Lambert writes
especiallyis that she puts all of her heart
into all of her music, Sooy said. You can
hear it in her words.
The tracks on Catch Me were all based
on experiences in Sooys own life. Just
Friends is about falling in love with a
friend who doesnt return the feeling. I
Should Have is about regretting not taking a risk. Sooy wrote songs that she felt
anyone could relate to.
Everyone goes through heartbreak,
she said.
After Sooy spontaneously writes song
lyrics and comes up with a melody in her
head, she sits at a piano to figure out the
chords to match. She tries to avoid the
same four chords that make up most pop
songs.
Sooy had always wanted to be a singer.
She started voice and piano lessons at
about five years old.
When she saw American Idol on television, she had made up her mind: Dad, I
wanna do that! Her father, Millville City
Commissioner Joseph Sooy, soon became
her manager, despite having no former
musical experience. Today, he rarely ever
misses one of his daughters recording sessions.
Also at age five, Sooy started dancing at
Childrens Ballet Workshop in Vineland.
The first time Sooy went to the dance studio, she was too nervous to dance in front
of others. But, when she went home that
day, she performed the combination she
learned in front of her parents.
Sooy recalled how dance teacher Sandi
DiLeo taught her students to not just
dance, but sing as well. Sooy attributes
DiLeo, who retired this year, for helping
Sooy build her confidence enough to perform in front of others.
Lizz was one of my all-time favorite
students, said DiLeo, who taught dance
for 41 years. She was always a hard worker, dedicated in everything she did. But, in
addition to that, she is one of the happiest,
kindest people I know.
I was always watching her and crying
while she sang. She was that good, DiLeo
continued. Sooy performed at Childrens
Ballet Workshop until she graduated high
school.
