ELEG 389 (Summer 2016) Syllabus

About the Course
The course explores the design aspects involved in the realization of CMOS digital integrated circuits
from device up to the register level. It addresses major design methodologies with emphasis placed
on structured full custom design. The course includes the study of the MOS device, CMOS inverter,
critical interconnect and gate characteristics that determine the performance of CMOS digital
circuits. It also includes CMOS logic design from transistor level schematic to layout for fabrication.
Students will use state-of-the art CAD tools to verify designs and develop efficient circuit layouts.
Prerequisites:

ELEG 270 (Electronics)

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students should be able to:
1. Understand the static and switching characteristics of the CMOS inverter.
2. Understand combinational and sequential MOS logic circuits.
3. Apply principles of hierarchical digital CMOS circuits, from the transistor up to the circuit
level.

Textbook
(1) Microelectronic Circuits, 6th Edition (International edition), Sedra A. and Smith K.; Oxford
University Press, 2011.
(2) Analysis and Design of Digital Integrated Circuits, 3rd Edition, David A. Hodges, Horace G.
Jackson, Resve A. Saleh, 2003.

Course Policies
1. Only in exceptional circumstances will late work be accepted or deadline will be extended.
2. Penalties will be imposed for each late submission as follows: deduction of 20% of the marks for
each late day up to a maximum of 2 days. No assignment, for which no extension has been granted,
will be accepted after 2 days past the deadline.
3. Class attendance in lectures is essential and may be taken into consideration when borderline
grades are reviewed.
4. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Kindly adhere to AUKs code of academic integrity and honesty
as detailed in the universitys academic catalog.
5. Students are required to have an account on Moodle and enroll on the course page to receive useful
handouts and announcements for the course.
6. All required special arrangements due to a documented disability must be communicated to the
instructor during the first week of the course.
7. No make ups for any piece of assessment. In case of an unavoided emergency, the total weight of
the remaining assessments might be adjusted. This policy is very strict with no exceptions.

Disability Accommodations
If you believe that you need accommodations for a disability, you are requested to contact Dr. Huda
Shaaban (hshaaban@auk.edu.kw), in the Student Counseling Center (Located in front of Gate 2, between
the Hangout and Academic Advising) to arrange an appointment to discuss your needs. You are also
welcome to contact me to discuss your academic needs. However, since all disability-related
accommodations require registration with the Student Counseling Center and are not applied retroactively,
you should contact Dr. Huda Shaaban as soon as possible.
