THE HISTORY OF TOP 40 SAXOPHONE SOLOS
1955-2013
Rock & Roll Saxophone-foreword by Scott Page, was published in
1989. Contemporary Saxophone-foreword by Ernie Watts and preface
Jay Davidson, was published in 1992 followed by the 2nd edition of
Rock & Roll Saxophone in 1996. Over the years I have received many
questions about the players whose solos were heard on the Top 40
"Pop" music hits. Many of the solos inspired students of all ages
to pick up the sax and join a band.
In the 50s/60S it may have been King Curtis, Boots Randolph, Lee
Allen, Ace Cannon or Junior Walker. In more recent years Marc
Russo, Dave Koz, Kenny G, Kirk Whalum, Ernie Watts, Candy Dulfer
or Gerald Albright. In addition, many UK artists led the
inspiration overseas. The list continues to grow.
Many of the hits featured sax players who never received credit,
either on L.P. covers, CD liner notes or history books. The
following list represents a long overdue salute to these

The New Sound
The year was 1955. The new Top 40 hits of Fats Domino, The El
Dorados, Billy Vaughn, Bill Haley and the Comets, and Pat Boone
were filling the airwaves and jukeboxes across the globe.
Teenagers were tuning in and dancing to the new beat. In 1956,
Little Richard, Johnny Dankworth, The Dells, Ken MacIntosh, The
Cadillacs, The Five Satins, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, and
Bill Doggett also joined in and were recording the new Top 40
hits. It was an exciting time for many teenagers. International
popular music was about to change forever and one unique sound
that was common to many hit records was the versatile styles of
the saxophone.
Who were the musicians who inspired many of us to learn to
play the sax during the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s?
Where are they today?
Unfortunately, for many years in the world of pop music most
session musicians were never given credit on the LP covers or CD
liner notes. In some cases, had it not been for the studio
musicians, the record might not have become a hit for the singer.
Even in some recordings that used the singers own band, credit
was not always given to those who made it happen.
In most historical documents there is room for error and
misinformation. I have used Internet resources, email responses,
and various books to confirm as many dates, names, and songs as
possible. However, as I concluded the research and prepared this
book to be published, I knew that an updated edition would follow
in the future as more songs, names, and corrections surface.
If you have additional information to add to the future
editions, please contact me at JSAXL@aol.com and I will add your
updates to the text. I hope we will one day have a complete and
comprehensive account of these musicians.
The majority of the listed hits contain an obvious solo.
However, a few of the hits have a dominant sax line in the
background but no solo per se. According to the contributors the
background sax line was a vital part of the song so it was added.

I could not confirm the names of the recording session players for
Pat Boone. His agent indicated that Mr. Boone recalled the name
Justin Tubbs as being the sax soloist. However, according to a
web site by Don Rose;
His (Joe Daley) career has been diverse: he was one of the
brothers in a Woody Herman Herd of 1950-51, and worked with the
Maynard Ferguson and Nelson Riddle bands. He also played tenor in
the studio band that backed Pat Boone for most of his recording
sessions during the 1950s.
Another name that was given to me is Justin Gordon. Gordon also
appears on the Billy Vaughn hits.
The Bear Family Records collection credits the following sax
players for Boones sessions which include all of his Top 40 hits;
JOHN ROTELLA, WILBUR SCHWARTZ, PAUL HORN, JOE KRETCHER, JULIAN C.
MATLOCK, RYLAND WESTON, JOSEPH KRECHTER, HAROLD HUGH EHRMANN,

Teenagers when they went into the studio to record the song
with Jimmy Wright and his band (Wright suggested the new
name).

buddylucas.htm, Buddy Lucas worked regularly as a session
musician (on tenor saxophone or harmonica) from the early
1950s until the mid 1960s. Besides the recordings above, he
appeared on various others, including labels such as Jubilee,
RCA/Groove, Gone/End, Roulette/Gee, and Swan/Lawn, and smash
hits such as Why Do Fools Fall In Love by The Teenagers
(1956), Maybe by The Chantels (1957), and Tears On My
Pillow by Little Anthony & the Imperials (1958).

the box set The Specialty Sessions, the version of Kansas
City that was issued on 45 (Specialty 664) and on the LP The
Fabulous Little Richard was recorded in Los Angeles at a
session on November 29, 1955, with Clarence Ford on tenor and
baritone sax and Joseph Tillman on tenor. (There is also a
version recorded on September 13, 1955 - the day before Tutti
Frutti - with Lee Allen, tenor, and Alvin Red Tyler,
baritone, but this wasn't issued until circa 1970, on the LP

Johnson, bass; Sticks Simpkins, drums; John Patton, piano;
Unidentified: baritone sax; Charles McClendon, tenor sax;
Eddie Saunders, tenor sax; Ted Curson, trumpet; The Ray
Charles Singers, vocal group. The flip, "You Need Love" was
recorded at the same session. "Stagger Lee" entered the
Billboard charts on December 8, 1958. So it should be moved
from 1959 to 1958.
Unfortunately, no personnel info for "Just Because".

Dear Mr. Laughter-Richard Weize from Bear Family forwarded me your e-mail--I
wrote the liner notes for Lloyd Rocks and tried to help put
together the sessionography, though Price's ABC sessions are
very lacking in known personnel.
I've never heard of Merritt Mel Dalton--never saw his name in

any discography on Lloyd or any other artist, and Lloyd sure
never mentioned him when I interviewed him. There is no lead
sax man on "Personality" or "I'm Gonna Get Married"--those
are strictly ensemble horn parts, so "Stagger Lee" would be
all we have to go on to try to ID him, and without any access
to possible personnel logs in ABC-Paramount's files
(certainly ones that have never gone public in any
publications I've ever seen), that's rather difficult. I
would suggest you contact Lloyd directly to
confirm that Dalton was his sax player on those sides. He's
not all that hard to track down, though who knows what he
remembers about individual session personnel by now. Apart
from Big John Patton, Lloyd didn't mention any of his many
musicians by name when I interviewed him at length a few
years back.

I have asked Stuart Colman (probably the world's greatest

rock n roll expert) about this and here is his answer:
(Stupid Cupid has never been listed in terms of a
sessionography as far as I know. But the sax players who
worked with Connie in the late fifties/early sixties have.
They include Al Klink, Jerome Richardson, Seldon Powell, King
Curtis, Bernie Kaufman and Artie Kaplan. Both Artie and
Bernie K also worked extensively with Neil Sedaka and they
are ex big-band players and play in a more mellow fashion.
Its not King Curtis, but my ears tell me Seldon Powell. If
not Seldon, then Bernie Kaufman. I asked Connie herself once
but she couldnt remember.)
I would also put my money on Seldon Powell. The solo is in
the same style as the one on "The Shape I'm In" by Johnny
Restivo and that is Seldon Powell.

1960, Fats Domino, Country Boy. This session (Nov. 4., 1958)
was held in Los Angeles (not New Orleans), as Herb Hardesty
has confirmed in a private mail to me. However, the
(fantastic) sax solo is by Plas Johnson (see Stuart Colman's
mail below). Hardesty plays baritone sax. Clarence Ford was
not on the session.

Hi Dik,
Re. the Fats recordings made in L.A. 4th Nov.'58. With due
respect to both Bear Family and Herb Hardesty, it's
Plas Johnson who takes most all of the tenor solos on the
date. Herb however, did do the business on 'Every Night.'
In the Fats instance, I can spot Plas a mile off. I have
referred as many 50's sessions as possible to both Plas and
his secretary; usually he agrees or scratches his head. We
have been close friends for nearly 30 years now.

it may have been Robert Gladney, if not Robert, maybe Charles
Chalmers.....however, Ace will check his list this week. Stay

According to Jerry Wexler, Smoochy Smith, Duck Dunn, and
Estelle Axton, early versions of the song did not have a
tenor sax solo featured on the released 45. Supposedly Wexley
heard an early take and suggested that a sax solo be added.
Gilbert Caple was given the job. This was his first solo he
had ever recorded and consequently Caple was somewhat scared.
We worked so long that night that everybody got disgusted
sighed Caple. Cable states that the solo that is heard on the
record was actually pieced together from several different
attempts.

According to Ernst Jorgnsen, Bobby Keys DID NOT play the sax
on the Return to Sender track. Boots Randolph was flown to
Los Angeles with Scotty Moore and D. J. Fontana a few days

before recording began and rehearsed the songs that had been
chosen for the movie. Elvis arrived a few days later and
would record them with Boots, Scotty, D. J., and some session
musicians from Radio Recorders.

As for the Sam Cooke recordings, Plas says he did some, and
I know Jackie did some (Twistin the Night Away, for one) but
any time Jewell was on any recording with which Im familiar,
he played baritone. Jackie told me that when Plas would send
him to sub because he was too busy, they would want him to
sound like Plas, so he learned. Ive got 3 Sam Cooke LPs - if
I can fire up the turntable, Ill play them and see what I
hear.

Just read your piece on 'Beans' Bowles. Don't know where you
got the info from but 'Beans' did NOT play bari on any of the
songs you credited him with. All were played by Andrew 'Mike'
Terry with the exception of 'What's going on' which was early
70s by which time Mike had left.
Without going through every track, I can categorically tell
you that Mike Terry played baritone sax on EVERY session that
featured the instrument until he left Motown in 1966. His
sound was never replaced and, unless it was a track recorded
before his departure, the baritone wasn't used again. Bowles
may have played flute on some tracks and may (and I say this
cautiously) may have played tenor in the very early days, but
it would have been less than a handful I can tell you. It was
always an irritation to Mike the way Bowles would always be
interviewed with his bari in the background or give the
impression that he played bari on records but he did not. One
musician actually told me that the top brass at Motown put
Bowles on the road as tour manager in the early sixties to
get him out of the studio. He certainly did not play baritone
on any recordings after 1959.
I have written an extended article on Mike (c 5000 words) and
am working on his biography.

I think youd do well to include Floyd Newman on the
baritone sax in the 1965 hit, In the Midnight Hour. His
deep notes a few bars into the song really set the tone for
the melody to me at least. The only horn on Midnight Hour
was Wayne Jacksons trumpet. There were three sax players
Newman, Packy Axton and Andrew Love. The rest of the crew was
the usual Memphis guys, Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn.

actually printed out (!) back in January. (Here's me thinking
they were the de facto 'forty top solos'...DOH!) Anyway, it
was gratifying to see the names of all those guys - personal
LEGENDS & boyhood HEROES - who've inspired ME: a bit like revisiting the musical family album.
However, I'd just like to comment on one entry:-

I think youll find Maceo Parker played (admittedly lightertoned) TENOR - not alto - on this and his other J.B. solo
features. He eventually switched to ALTO at the boss's behest
at the beginning of 1973 upon returning to the fold: reformed as Fred Wesley & The JB's. N.B. Doing It To Death
plus the album track Damn Right I Am Somebody which I
vividly recall hearing as it blared out of a boutique and
going "Hey, that alto players Maceo!, dashing in and
demanding to see the LP cover!!
He even confirmed this to me personally in the early 90s when

I met him & his Roots Revisited band fellow blowers Fred &
Pee Wee Ellis in Germany and remarked how Pee Wee had gone
back to his native Tenor from Alto, thus theyd effectively
switched horns (again)!
Maceo had been hired together with and at the insistence of
his brother drummer Melvin - met HIM at that gig, too!! because he owned a baritone but later it was obvious he was a
star tenor soloist-in-waiting...so poor old St. Clair
Pinckney got shunted to bari. N.B 1967 Get It Together
where you hear the Godfather exhorting Pinck while
declaiming his mutual Augusta, Georgia background, not to
mention Cold Sweat itself.
IN FACT...if you listen closely to the out-chorus solos on
the full, dry & pre-speeded-up [Eb] version of Papas Got A
Brand New Bag available on the absolutely essential Polydor
Showtime 4 x CD set: You can hear Maceo play bari in the
section, switch to tenor for that classic serpentine funkdefining solo, then back for a subsequent bari solo. Truly a
landmark recording.

Once the group signed with The Lowery Music Group out of
Atlanta, Georgia and Capitol records, The Classics IV rerecorded Spooky. The song was originally an instrumental
regional hit by Mike Sharp, a talented saxophone player. J.R.
Cobb and producer Buddy Buie added lyrics to it and the rest
is history.

However, the following clears up the issue;

This is Joe G. (Joe Glickman) I am the biographer on The
Classics IV and their archivist. I started a documentary on
the group about 7 years ago and traveled around the country
gathering over 30 interviews with producers, writers, session
musicians and band members of The Classics IV. I can say with
100% CERTAINTY that Mike Shapiro IS the sax player on SPOOKY.
By the way, the reason he didnt play on some of the other
records (the ones Ray Jarrel played on) was because Mike was
a bit hard to work with in the studio. He had a very good
concept of how he wanted the solos, which differed from Buddy
Buies ideas of mainstream pop. Theres a bit of a tone-break
at the end of the solo that Mike insisted on re-recording,
but Buddy wouldnt let him. Now, Ive interviewed on video:
Buddy Buie (producer/writer), J.R. Cobb (guitarist/writer),
Dennis St. John (session drummer), Emory Gordy, Jr. (session
bass player), Wally Eaton (session cowbell and whistler road bass player), Bill Lowery (producer/publisher), Dennis
Yost (lead singer) as well as Mike Shapiro himself. They were
all at the session and played on the entire Spooky album.
All of them told me that Mike Shapiro recorded the sax solo
and Mike remembers, too. It doesnt get much more conclusive
than that.
English White was a sax player that was brought in later

during the Traces road tour to fill in for the sax. Mike
did not tour at all and the band had been playing for a while
with Auburn Burrell filling in the sax solos on lead guitar.
That was hurting their reception since the sax had a lot to
do with their sound.
The only reason I can figure a few sites credit Jim Pepper is
because one started it and the others follow. Try checking
the internet and some fairly accredited recording
publications, like ROLLING STONE, and ALL MUSIC GUIDE, and
they all credit Wally Eaton on rhythm guitar and Joe Wilson
on bass. WRONG! Wally was the bass player and Joe Wilson
played keyboards. They only played their true instruments on
their very first records on the Capitol Label and also
contributed other instrumentation in the studio for the hits,
but they were the touring band and the ORIGINAL Classics IV
members.
There are SEVERAL people who have claimed to have recorded

the sax solo on Spooky. I still get e-mails from fans who
bump into these nut jobs. I dont know how someone can take
credit for something they didn't do, but Im sure after a
while they start believing their own lies. There was a fake
CLASSICS IV that I had to fight to get the trademark back
from a few years ago (and did, successfully) so theyre out
there....I just don't understand it and I wont try. Whoever
that is that said Jim laughed while looking back on
recording Spooky probably should know that Jim was laughing
because the guy was buying his made-up story. Jim Pepper did
NOT record Spooky. PERIOD. And if anyone that represents
him wants to challenge me on that - BRING IT ON.

By the way, Mike Shapiro recorded under the name Mike Sharpe
because Shapiro wasn't Gentile enough for the recording
industry at the time. That is a comment made by Buddy Buie to
me. Shapiro played at The Houndstooth in Atlanta with Harry
Middlebrooks early on and Emory Gordy, Jr. and Dennis St.
John both played on Mikes instrumental version, as well as
The Classics IVs, which came out nearly a year before The
Classics IVs version. Mike Sharpe recorded on the same
label, but at a studio down the road from Lowerys. Buie and
Cobb heard the instrumental and added lyrics to it. The rest
is history.

I may have some photos of him (Ray) when we were in a house
band years ago. The band was called The Renegades and the
club was The Alibi on Lawrenceville Hwy. in Tucker, just
outside Atlanta. The time was 83-86. He also played in a
soul/horn band called The Willies after that who played all
around Atlanta for a year or so. He worked with Jimmy
Lankford of Cumming for years and we would sometimes play
pickup gigs as The T-Bones, a name we borrowed from long
ago. They had an instrumental hit that was used as the Alka
Seltzer commercial in the 60s I believe. Ray reminded me a
lot of David Sanborn. He lived in an old trailer, had a big
hound dog and loved to go fishing with his dog. Ray could
always top anyone, if he wanted. I remember hanging in the
kitchen at The Alibi during breaks and asking him to play
this and that. He could imitate the masters upon request at
the drop of a hat. Play Coltrane, boomplay Charlie Parker,

Rafferty's perfect pop moment came in 1978 with 'Baker
Street', a song of hoarse sincerity about giving up the booze
and the one-night stands and settling down. It is now a
staple of soft rock stations, where it has the sturdy
inevitability of Christmas or death. Movie director Gus Van
Sant used it for a key scene in Good Will Hunting and the
song was a hit once again in the Nineties when covered by
Undercover. It even featured in an episode of The Simpsons,
with Lisa playing it on her saxophone. Yet until Raphael
Ravenscroft overlaid a glistening saxophone solo, it was
destined to be just another folky tune. Ravenscroft's name
doesn't appear on the writing credits allowing the NME to
start up an urban myth that bespectacled former Blockbusters
presenter Bob Holness had performed the sax solo. Rafferty
maintains that he wrote the hook, and claims he intended to
sing the refrain at first. Ravenscroft disagrees, saying he
was presented with a song that contained "several gaps".
"In fact, most of what I played was an old blues riff," says
the sax musician. "If you're asking me: 'Did Gerry hand me a
piece of music to play?' then no, he didn't." Ravenscroft's
fee was a cheque for 27, which he says bounced anyway and is
now framed and hangs on his solicitor's wall. Rafferty has
not attempted to make further payment, and Ravenscroft has
chosen not to pursue the matter of a song that guarantees
Rafferty a yearly income of 80,000. Since the song thrust
Rafferty into a spotlight that has made him deeply
uncomfortable ever since, maybe Ravenscroft is right to
regard the riches of 'Baker Street' as tainted money: "If I
had received pots of money, I wouldn't have known what to
do," he remarked recently. "It might have destroyed me."

The following quote was found on Sax on the Web;

The Sax AL NEWMAN used is a Selmer Alto Mark VI circa 1958
SN84452. In the docs Al supplied to Howarths of London he
writes: "The last recording session I played it on prior to

leaving for America in late 1977 was at a recording studio in
Rodmarton Street, near Baker Street W1 where was required to
perform an Alto Sax solo and had to sign a release form. I
later found out that this track was Baker Street by Jerry
Rafferty and that credit for the Sax solo was first taken by
the producer of the track and later falsely by Raf

My name is Jonathan Newman and I am the son of Al Newman, who

recorded the original sax riff on Baker St. I am so pleased
you have set the record straight to what is a very long
overdue omission in the history of this famous song.

The last session my father played on in 1977 prior to leaving

for LA was Rafferty's Baker St, in a recording studio in
Rodmartin St, where he played alto sax (a Selmer Alto Sax MK
V! - No 84452 -auctioned through Howarth's). He was required
to sign a release form, common in those days. He later found
out that credit was first taken by the producer of the track,
and then sometime later falsely taken by Ravenscroft.
My father, though very well known in both the jazz and the
session world, has never sought the limelight. He is now in
his 80s and has retired. It is sad to me that the truth has
never come out, that Rav took credit for this, and that my
father never got the recognition he deserved.

I'm surprised I didn't catch this when your book first came
out, but in your sax on the web post I was enjoying looking
through all the soloists you'd compiled through the years and
was surprised to see that you had Lou Marini as the soloist
on the record "King Tut" by Steve Martin. Actually that was
me on tenor for the solo and I also overdubbed the bari and
the flute parts. The rest of the section was made up of guys
in the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Steve, the Dirt Band and the
band I was in at the time all shared the same manager, Bill
McEuen. (John McEuen's Brother) The song was recorded at Bill
McEuen's Studio in Aspen Colorado. Bill even gave me a gold
record of the tune once it became a hit, which I still have.
I'm sure where the confusion came in was that Lou Marini was
in the Saturday Night Band at the time Steve Martin appeared
on the show after the tune was a hit. They of course used the
Saturday Night Live Band for Steve's live rendition on the
show and Lou played the tenor solo, dressed in the Egyptian
costume (lucky guy!). I'd love to hear back from you on this
if you have the time.

a long road trying to confirm the credits on the list so any
help is appreciated. And we have had a lot of help.
I recall that the information was taken from some web sites
which are not all accurate as follows but it stands to reason
that Lou would have been given credit for the "live" version.

That was interesting to see those links you sent. They seemed
pretty accurate, other than one implying that the TV
performance came before the record--the record was already a
hit by the time the Saturday Night Live performance occurred.
I remember when Steve was booked for the show and the tune
was already big on the radio, there was some talk about
having the Dirt Band and I do the show with Steve as the band
but it didn't take them long to figure out they already had a
house band (with Lou) that would do a great job!

Hi again John,
I stumbled onto another post from you dated last September
asking for credit info and one of the tunes was the Dirt
Band's "Fire in the Sky" from 1981. In case you still need
the info, I played the solo on that one and so did Al Garth!
We are both on the same cut, just in different sections if I
remember correctly. Al was a member of the band about up to
that time but was leaving and they had me come in to add the
solo to the cut. Jeff Hanna of the Dirt Band was producing
and it was recorded in L.A.

It was me. Alan Holmes on the final version.
Other sax players did play on the track but my unique
growling style was what they really were looking for.
Alby Donnelly was getting the broadcast royalties until a
couple of years ago.
I also did 'Good Morning Good Morning'on Sgt Pepper plus four
years of playing on all the Kinks rock opera stuff.
Bob asked me about working with the Beatles.
The Musicians Union demanded that I was paid every time Bob
mimed to my playing on TV because he did not want me to
appear in person.
I started out by playing with Gene Vincent and Little
Richard. 'Dont knock the Rock' shown on Granada TV.

Originally formed as a sextet, the Jazziacs included Robert
Kool Bell-bass, Robert Spike Mickens-trumpet, Ronald The
Captain Bell, later known by his Muslim name Khalis Bayyantenor saxophone, Ricky Westfield keyboards and Dennis Dee
Tee Thomas- alto saxophone and Funky George Brown-drums.
Based in Jersey City, this aspiring jazz group opened for
acts such as Pharaoh Sanders and Leone Thomas. They were

later joined by Claydes Charles Smith-guitar and as the
Soul Town Band, moderated their early direction by blending
soul and funk, a transition completed by 1969 when they
settled on the name Kool & The Gang. The original seven
members remained with the group into the 80s.

I did not play on the original recording of Daddy's Home by
Cliff Richard, although I did play on a later live version in
1990. I think the original solo sax may have been Howie Casey
or Mel Collins.

I did any sessions for Elkie untill 86-87 when I did a
couple of tracks on an album called No more the Fool one

Chain and the other which was Alto I cant remember.

Hi,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. There were a few
different versions of this song, the single, movie, and movie
soundtrack may be different in some ways including lead
singers. I thought Edgar played Sax, however I just cant be
sure, there may have been a few people tried on Sax I cant
recall which one we used.
Ill look into this for you and see what I come up with, and
yes I recorded this and worked on the mix with another
mixer.

I believe that you are right. I think the track that I played
on that album was called "The Color Of Love", and I think
that it was a soprano solo that I played. I have no memory of
playing on Get Outta My Car....
I recently played a gig with Barry Eastmond who produced the
record and I believe that that was the song with the soprano
sax solo.

Thanks again for this awesome repository information! A
quick update/validation on Page 101, the last song listed for
2004. I confirmed with Jeff Coffin that the soloist on Honky
Tonk Girl was Jim Horn. I went to school with Jeff, we
roomed on the road together long ago and still keep in touch
these days while hes on the road with the Dave Matthews
Band.

The saxophone features prominently in the work of French dance

music duo Klingande. But while they are fine musicians in their
own right, neither Cedric Steinmyller nor Edgar Catry play the
instrument.
We have a live saxophonist who plays with us on as many shows as
possible, Cedric explained. We love the saxophone sound and
include it in virtually all of our tracks. Some of the pieces are
newly created but most of what you hear is taken from samples of
fantastic saxophone solos which weve tracked down on what are
usually little known songs.

The sound of Jubel and Punga come about a sample pack at the
beginning and the saxophonist on the pack is Snake Davis. This is
a pseudo but I think you can find the real name on the web.
