Think ahead
1 Do you prefer to visit a new city alone or with another person? What are the
advantages and disadvantages of each?
2 Read the article quickly to see if any of your opinions are mentioned.
Going it alone
Ten years ago, my boyfriend and I planned to go on a romantic
trip to New York. I hadnt wanted to go with my girlfriends and
spend the time simply shopping New York was somewhere to
wander, to inhale the atmosphere. Then my boyfriend and I
broke up. Never mind, I thought. 1
. So I spent my
savings on a watch.
A couple of months ago, my now ten-year-old
watch finally stopped. A day or two later I realised I
still owned an almost-unopened Fodors Guide to
New York. It was time to take control. If no one was
going to take me on a trip to New York, I was clearly
.
going to have to take myself. 2
I decided that luxury was the only way to go and
as I waited in the luxurious Upper Class lounge at
Heathrow, I soon realised Id made the right decision.
By the time we landed in New York I was in a state of
excitement and nervousness. Nevertheless, the
electric jolt I felt on seeing the stars and stripes
as I entered the airport surprised me.
3
. But when the official asked
me how I was, I alarmed even
myself with my strangled sob, and
wobbly answer: Fine I just cant
believe Im here! As two big tears
landed on my passport I was ushered
away with great haste.
