Ex.#2: Archimedes Principle

:Objective
The objective of this Experiment is Verification of
Archimedes' principle and Study buoyancy for regularly
body.

:Apparatus
* Three wood cubes.
* Balance.
* Water Container.
* Metal weights.

:Theory
Archimedes principle states that a body wholly or partially
submerged in a fluid is buoyed up by a force equal in
magnitude to the weight of the fluid displaced by the body.
It is important to remember that fluid includes liquids and
gases. This force is given by:
F B= Vg

When a metallic block is immersed in water (or any other

liquid), four vertical forces act upon the block below the
surface of water. These forces can be grouped into two
types of forces.
1. Downward forces
a. The weight of the block.

b. The downward thrust due to pressure of the

liquid on the upper surface of the block.
2. Upward forces
a. The tension of the spring, which measures the
apparent weight.

:Procedure
1/ Fill the containar with water.
2/ Weighing wooden cubes and calculate the density of
them.
3/put the first cube(7cm*7.5cm*7cm) in container,
measure the length of the submerged part of the cube in
the water(h).
4/ put the second cube(9cm*9cm*7cm) in container,
measure the length of the submerged part of the cube in
the water(h).
5/ Start adding metal weights on second cube until the
Cube becomes totally immersed.
6/ put the third cube(9.5cm*9.5cm*7.3cm) in container,
measure the length of the submerged part of the cube in
the water(h).
7/ Start adding metal weights on third cube until the Cube
becomes totally immersed.

:Comment
1/ The cubes was not regularly and thus the cubes
floats diagonally and we cannot calculate the value
of ( h ) accurately.
2/The second and third cubes not complete
immersion because not regularly.
