FARMERS MARKET

the site

Cheticamp is a rural Acadian community on the western coast of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, with a population of
around 3,000 people. The primary industries are fishing, tourism, and hospitality. Cheticamp is known for its hurricane force winds called Suettes, which
can reach up to 200 km/h and come
from the south east off the mountains
in the highlands. Considering these
factors lead to the design of a gridshell,
a lattice-like structure that would allow
the south east winds to pass through.

Throughout the semester, we experienced many aspects of a design

project including community consultations, drawing construction documents, speaking with various trades
and structural tests at the Dalhousie Civil Engineering Department.

details

This structure is a great improvement from the former market,

which was made up of temporary
tents and folding tables. The community was very involved in the
project, from design suggestions
to volunteering on the work site.

Cheticamp Farmets Market, August 2014

With the help of plaster molds to help

mimic the grid shell structure, a kidney
shaped form was agreed upon. This
allowed for two main entrances, enabling visitors of the farmers market to
walk seamlessly through the structure.

how to

Since this studio was a design build

studio, there was a lot of trial and error
and thinking on the spot. After meeting with the community to find out what
it was that they needed, we broke out
into teams to experiment with overall
form, node connections, foundation
connections, and cladding systems.

B5 | dalhousie school
of music
tutor: talbot sweetapple
The majority of the program for
this school, is contained within a
crust that wraps around the building. This allows the auditoriums to
be the focal point while creating
open public space in the centre.
The auditorium itself was lifted off the
ground and pushed towards University
Ave; Because the auditorium is lifted,
one is able to see it as a whole and
experience it from different angles
and locations. This gives a sense
of compression and decompression as one walks through the lobby.
Walkways on each floor wrap around
the entire auditorium, creating an engaging path for users. An element
with a hierarchy of cut outs was added to wrap around the front of the
building, these openings emphasize
the auditorium and provoke a sense
of curiosity for people walking by.
Although mostly covered up by the
facade, one can imagine its entirety
by connecting the visible portions.

Throughout the B4 work term, we

worked on a 1:1 mock up of the treehouse as well as travelled to the site to
commence construction in New Brunswick. This was the main focus of our
work term, and a lot of time was spent
speaking with clients and tradespeople.

The site for this project is located on

a steep slope overlooking the Bay of
Fundy in Fundy National Park, NB.
The tree house is being designed
as alternative sleeping accomodations for visitors of the park. The
treehouse has involved numerous
groups of students, as it has been
an ongoing project since July 2012.

Due to the experimental nature of

this project, we stayed true to the
Thinking while Doing motto as we
resarched and problem solved on site
to construct this continuous grid shell.

B4 | ross creek
solar showers
employer: coastal studio
group: K Hall, K Labrecque,
K Latham, m lloyd
This project is located at Ross Creek
Centre for the Arts in Canning, Nova
Scotia. Ross Creek provides weeklong summer camps for kids, allowing
them to explore the arts. The outdoor
solar showers were designed for
the campers of Ross Creek to use.
Perched on a hill, the walls of the
shower stalls are angled in plan and
shoot outwards off of the main platform, each framing a different view
of the landscape. The intent was to
provide the campers with a view while
still maintaining privacy, creating a
different experience for each stall.
Like the tree house, this is an ongoing design. During the B4 work
term, a group of us helped construct
the showers, and created as-built
drawings to be sent to a contractor
to finish out the remaining details.

Along with the main volume of the

building, a side core was created to
house all services such as washrooms,
vertical circulation, and offices; this allows the rest of the building to be more
open. A sense of separation between
the core and the main portion of the
building was created by placing a corridor between the two, as well as running glass all the way around. An interesting moment is created at this point,
where one can see directly through
to the waterfront from Hollis Street.

The performance theatre is located on

a corner lot with three facades, directly
across from the Halifax waterfront. The
steep slope was embraced by creating
a sliding mass. By using a triangular
shape and creating a large focal stair,
a connection was made between Hollis Street and Lower Water Street.

B2 | lunenburg house
Lunenburg, Nova Scotia is a UNESCO
Heritage Site. To fit a building into its
existing urban fabric is a delicate process. The assignment was to design a
dwelling with a work-live component on
one of the most characteristic streets
of Lunenburg: Montague Street.
Being located on a through lot between Montague Street and Bluenose Drive, a sense of continuity
between the two was important.
This was maintained by using lots
of glazing and a public walk way.

`initial concept

mackay-lyons, emmanual

the site

Traditional house types were studied

and then transformed by pushing and
pulling different parts to create cantilevers and opposing voids. Essentially,
something found all over Lunenburg,
a gable roof house with a shed addition, was modified into something new.

B1 | counterpoint
pavilion
tutor: talbot sweetapple
The counterpoint pavilion is a space
for not only tourists visiting the Brion
Cemetery, but also the families and
friends of those who lay in the adjacent cemetery. Aside from a convenient location to purchase flowers for
loved ones, this pavilion is a place
for family and friends to meet and
gain composure, or just get together
for a cup of tea. The tranquility of the
surroundings makes this building an
ideal place to relax and contemplate.

The space was designed to enhance

and flow with the features of the Brion cemetery. A long 7 foot high wall
extending past the main volume of
the building helps convey a sense of
belonging and also acts as a point of
interest to peak curiosity of those walking by. By using lots of glass and a hierarchy of windows, a possible closed
in space becomes filled with light.
