INTRODUCTION
technological devices and programs, however, are structured around the needs of the teacher and
are employed as teaching aids in the classroom. New media, implying mass media, as channels
of education gain relevance from their capacity to disseminate information to a great number of
people (masses) and make the present educational programs more effective and meaningful.
Locatis and Athinson define media as the means (usually audio
visual or electronics) for transmitting or delivering messages. Media includes such things as
prints, graphics, photography, audiocommunication, television, simulating games and
computer.
Mass media are means of impersonal communication via some
medium, imported through mediated situation. Mass media are means or instruments of
communication that reach large number of people or pupils with a common message. The
matter may be printed like newspapers or it may take the form of radio, television, movies,
journals and CD/DVDs. These help in improving the quality of education. Also they are helpful
in the spread of compulsory education and adult literacy.

MOVIES
A film is a multiple media of communication. It presents facts in a realistic
way, dramatizes human relations, arouses emotions and transmits attitude. It may be used for the
communication of ideas, attitudes and experiences to the masses of people. It is not possible to
learn everything by doing or firsthand viewing. Educational films are one such means of indirect
experience.
An educational film has been described as the greatest teacher because it
teaches not only through the brain but through the whole body. It has a very powerful influence
on the minds of children and in shaping their personality. The main aim of educational film is to
elevate and educate them according to the patterns and principles set by the society.
Motion pictures or films present an abstracted version of the real events
omitting, unnecessary and unimportant details. Motion pictures can help explore cultural context,
may be integrated easily into the classroom and curriculum, are entertaining and allow flexibility
of materials and teaching techniques.
The motion pictures exercise a great influence on human mind very skillfully.
They help to create lasting values in the pupils. There are various kinds of motion pictures of
them we are concerned with educational films which are of two kinds: Instructional Films and
Documentary Films.
Educational films make the concept more clear, durable and realistic. Motion
pictures arouse interest in children and satisfy their emotions. They bring the past, the distant to
the classroom. It can bring the whole world to the classroom. Motion pictures can also be
replayed many number of times when and where required.
Motion pictures can be of great service in teaching the backward children, because they do act on
the imagination of children.
CD/DVDs
Compact disc (CD) is a digital optical disc storage format. The format was
originally developed to store and play only sound recordings but was later adapted for
storage of data (CD-ROM).Teachers aim at childrens psychomotor and cognitive
development with the use of interactive CD-ROMs. But it has been found that the teachers
use the interactive CD-ROMs in the classrooms very rarely because of the lack of the
computer equipments in the classrooms.
Teachers recommend the virtual and audio elements of the interactive CD-ROMs to be
prepared more elaborately and carefully.
CD-ROM has the ability to store sound files, graphics, video sequences. This
makes it a versatile medium capable of interactive use. Students using this type of learning
tool are able to work at their own pace and capability.
DVD (digital versatile disc or digital video disc) is digital optical disc storage
any kind of digital data and is widely used for software and other computer files. DVDs
offer high storage capacity than compact disc while having the same dimensions.
The most obvious benefit of DVD-video with the computing capabilities of
the CD-ROM. It teach students how to locate, use, assess and manipulate information.
Also it teach research and technology skills while directly supporting curriculum
integration and new learning environments.
Todays students have been raised in a media-oriented environment and are
accustomed to visual images. DVD-ROM resources are motivating for students.
DVD technology opens a visual window to content for richer than print. DVD-ROMs
transform educational content into an engaging world of stories, facts, ideas, pictures and
sounds that students can actively explore. Additionally, DVD resources make teachers
better able to deliver information using the kinds of media that mirror how students really
think and learn.
CONCLUSION
In early times, the teacher was the only medium of communication for children. He taught
his students orally. During the course of time the invention of the printing press, led to the
printing of books. Then came newspapers. Now for quite some time new mass media like
radio and TV are increasingly used in education. They reach large members and also help
in improving the quality of education.
Mass media have proved to help in classifying concepts, stimulating group and individual
activities, developing a collective critical awareness, changing attitudes and encouraging
originality and creativeness. Therefore, teachers have to be properly motivated and made
interested in the use of such materials. And they have also to be trained and oriented in the
adequate use and maintenance of the materials.
It is important that the mass media be utilized in the classroom teaching so that the
students may obtain sensory stimulation as a part of the process of instruction.
