ARCHIMEDES PRINCIPLE

Question one

Using the diagram above, answer the following questions

1. What is the relationship between volume of stone and volume of water
displaced?
2. What is the relationship between upthrust and weight of water displaced?
3. What is the relationship between apparent loss in weight and upthrust?
4. What is the relationship between apparent loss in weight and weight of water
displaced?
5. What is buoyancy?
6. Assuming that weights of a stone air and water are 120N and 110N.
i.
What is the mass of water displaced?
ii.

Assuming that volume of water displaced is

2 M 3 , what is the density

of solid?
NB: Density of water is

1000

kg /m3

Question two
a) A Metal cube 5M long is totally immerses in water. Sketch a diagram similar
to question one diagram to illustrate Archimedes principle and label the areas
showing the apparent weight, apparent loss in weight, upthrust, buoyancy.
b) If the mass of above metal cube is 25,000kg, compute upthrust, apparent
weight, apparent loss in weight, buoyancy, weight of water displaced, mass
of water displaced and weight of metal when immersed in water.
