General Service Considerations

To a large extent the DRS-COMPACT2 requires little or no maintenance. Due to the most
advanced and extensive self monitoring features any internal as well as external abnormal
operating conditions are detected making periodic checks with a built in protection test set formerly
applied for the analogue technique virtually obsolete.
However if you require periodic function tests it is sufficient to check the measured values of the
processor unit called PROCESSING with the protected plant in operation.
In addition to a reliable protection system also the external plant components, such as CTs and
VTs, circuit breakers and other shut down equipment as well as the alarm annunciation system,
has to operate properly.
In order to check the correct functioning of the plant equipment and verify its integrity during the
allocated maintenance periods the DRS-COMPACT2 is provided with a series of convenient test
facilities, e.g. measured analogue vales, I/O display, I/O activation, etc.

Interpretation of the LED Indication

The LED display enables a quick survey of the protection system status or instantaneous and time
delayed trips without the aid of a note book or PC.
From the 28 LEDs at the device front the first row contains a green and a red LED for system
status information whereas the remaining rows with yellow and red LEDs indicate the
instantaneous and time delayed trips respectively. The denomination and allocation to the
protective function of a specific LED can be seen on the designation label to the right of the LED
columns.

Status LED (Row 1)

- Green LED (Operation)

Steady Light:

Normal operating conditions.

All auxiliary supplies are switched on and within their operating limits.

Flashing Light:

The PROCESSING is in service but no protective functions are

processed due to
being not configured or being a spare PROCESSING.

No Light:

No auxiliary supply and not in service. Via the two fault status
contacts the condition of the PROCESSING is annunciated.

- Red LED (Fault)

No Light:

no system failure, normal service

Flashing Light:

The systems self monitoring software has recognised a Category 1

failure, i.e. a non-critical fault condition enabling the system to
continue operation. This type of fault indicates a CT/VT or an I/O
circuit fault which can be located by display of the DRS fault status.

Steady Light:

The systems self monitoring software has recognised a Category 2

failure, which is a critical fault, thereby producing a complete system
halt. The fault can be displayed from the DRS fault status facility.

Alarm- and Trip LED (Row 2 to 14)

This LED type can be supplied with two different modes of operation which can be configured at
our Works according to order specification or during commissioning on site. This mode can only
be set by our engineering specialists and cannot be altered by the Customer.
Memory Mode:

All instantaneous- and time delayed trips are permanently indicated

on the LED display irrespective of when they occurred until reset
manually either from local or remote.

Refresh Mode:

Each new trip sequence will erase the previous LED display, i.e.
the last instantaneous or time delayed trip is indicated. In this mode
also a manual reset is enabled.

Resetting the LED Display
Prior to acknowledging the LED indication the cause should be carefully analysed, especially the
status LEDs.

Resetting the instantaneous- and time delayed trip LEDs

The alarm- and trip LED indication can be reset by briefly pressing the blue coloured reset push
button situated above the LED columns.
During this process a lamp test is carried out and all LEDs will be energised. Any Recorded
Curves or Fault Records are not influenced by this action.
Remote resetting of the LEDs can be accomplished by activating the corresponding digital input
"Remote resetting" (X2: 15,16), if implemented.

Resetting of the Status LED

The status LEDs are reset by keeping the reset push button operated until the left and the right
LED column will alternately be energised.
When resetting the status LEDs the other indication is reset as well. Again, Recorded Curves or
Fault Records are not influenced by this action.

-------------------------------------------------------------------Please note: The status LEDs cannot be reset remotely ensuring that the User is investigating
locally the system status.

Operating Push Buttons
Blue Reset Push Button:

This one serves for resetting of the optical indication, i.e. status
LEDs and alarm- and trip LEDs as well as for lamp testing.

System Reset Button:

A countersunk button located above the serial communication port

for the purpose of restarting the system after a system halt.
This action will re-initialise the PROCESSING and Recorded Curves
or Fault Records will not be erased during the process.

-------------------------------------------------------------------Caution: De-energising the auxiliary supply will erase any fault- and event records, recorded
curves and DRS fault status. Also the system time will be set to relative time and has to be
configured again after return of the supply according to the procedures outlined in the DRS-WIN
software manual.

Supervision and Fault Annunciation of the PROCESSING

The protection relay DRS-COMPACT2 is provided with extensive self monitoring and self check
systems which produce a corresponding optical indication and fault alarm for
Category 1 system faults, which is a less critical operating condition without blocking of the
PROCESSING, and for
Category 2 faults, being a critical fault resulting in a PROCESSING control unit block.
Both fault alarms are Normally Closed contacts which are in an open position during system
healthy conditions.
For Category 1 faults the red fault LED is flashing and the binary output No. 31 of the
PROCESSING is deactivating the corresponding interposing relay coil with its N/C contacts.
Category 2 faults will result in a steady-on red LED indication with subsequent de-energising of
binary output No. 32 and closure of the fault annunciation contacts.
The LED status as well as the fault annunciation contacts will remain in fault conditions until
manually reset.
In addition to the self checking software the hardware and especially the peripheral system
components are monitored which are announced by further fault alarm contacts.
-------------------------------------------------------------------Caution: Each fault alarm indicates that the system is not fully functioning and the User has to
make the decision whether or not the protected apparatus should remain in service.

Handling with and initialzing a spare device
It is recommended to have one spare part for each DRS-COMPACT2 device hardware version in
your plant. In case of faults which can not be solved directly by the customer it is easier to change
the faulty device with the spare part by the customer and to set parameters in this spare part they
have been used in the faulty device.
If it is not possible to have one spare for each special version of hardware we recommend to buy
one spare device with the maximum hardware configuration for the whole collection of variants
used in the plant. In this case the necessary functionality can be programmed by software
initializition.
An initialization of a device is only possible with PC operation using DRS-WIN. For initialization
the spare part device has to log on at DRS-WIN with the status SPARE PART. For initialization of
the spare part please handle as follows:

Connect spare part at proper power supply

Start DRS-WIN on PC and connect DRS-COMPACT2 with PC interface
If green LED is blinking and the display shows:

SPARE-PART

SETUP REQUIRED!!

Now initialize spare part like described in documentation about DRS-WIN4.

Creating a spare part

Also fully initialized and working DRS-COMPACT2 devices can be changed to spare parts!
For making a spare part please handle as follows:

Connect device at proper power supply

Watch if steady-on green LED indicates that you have a good working device
Open submenu "System functions" on display by clicking on the front key EXIT (SHIFT + ESC)
By clicking more times the key please select menu System functions, Spare Part
Confirm the selection with OK
Now quickly press the following sequence of keys: , UNDO , SHIFT , OK
After proper operation the green LED begins to blink and the LCD shows:

SPARE-PART

SETUP REQUIRED!!

and the device can be initialized like described in documentation about DRS-WIN4.

Caution: Before initialization of a spare part you have to take care that the used hardware
(type of device) is able to support all the functionality of the implemented firmware.

Appendix: Serial coupling acc. IEC 60870-5-103
For every protective device with serial coupling acc.IEC standard 60870-5-103 three parameters
have to be defined each available binary output signal, which have to be coordinated with the
control system using them.
1) IEC device address
Is defined once each device and is an increasing counting numer for the plant. So the control
system can identify the device. Allowed device addresses are 001 254.
!! Every device address can only be defined once each plant !!
2) IEC function type
The function type indicates the functionality of the device.
The allowed number area for function types which are depending on the manifacturer is 1 to 17
(so called private area), fo neutral function types higher than 128. In the DRS we use only function
types from the private area in general.
Devices with the same functionality get the same function type.

3) IEC information number

Is used for unique tracking of device signals. Every signal which leaves one protective function of
any device gets one IEC information number. With it the control system generates an according
message text.
If a function output shall not send a signal the function type and information number for this
function output has to defined to 0.

At customer specific configurations an individual table of information numbers are

delivered with the device documentation!
