A House is a House for Me

1. Brief Description- For this activity, children will be using their creativity to come up with a
house for a person, animal, or object after reading the story A House is a House for Me. They
will try writing out the word and we will put the finished pages together in a book
2. Rationale- This activity focuses on homes for things other than people which was what I was
focusing on for that day. Children work on sounding out words to spell and have teachers for
assistance with spelling as well. This increases phonemic awareness.
3. Domains- Fine motor, literacy, language, creativity
4. Goals- Children will use their creativity to come up with a house for an animal, object, or
person. Children will attempt to sound and write out the words. Children will draw a picture of
the home and thing living in it.
5. Objectives- Children will be able to come up with an idea of their own or recall an idea from
the book to place an animal, object, or person with a home. Children will be able to sound out
one letter in the words they are writing. Children will be able to draw a picture of their animal,
object, person in their home.
6. Materials- 17 copies of printed page for book, crayons, pencil, the book A House is a House
for Me
7. Set up- Before the activity I will read the book to the students. The activity will take place at
our individual work time in the classroom.
8. Role of adults- The classroom aid will be leading this activity as I help children one on one
with spelling and writing the words.
9. Prerequisite skills- Children must know about homes for objects and animals. They must also
know to recall some letters and sounds.
10. Adaptations- For children who do not have the prerequisite skills of phonemic and print
awareness I will work with them one on one to help them with the sounds and letters. Im more
interested in them becoming more aware of the letters and sounds rather than them writing
everything out correctly. For children who know very little about the primary objectives we will
go over the story together and I will work with them one on one to recall events of the story that
can be related to the activity. For children who have already met the primary objectives I will let
them use their creativity to come up with a new house and object/person/animal that goes with it.
They will also be able to write it out on their own. For children with special needs I will work
with them one on one and my focus will be on finding a specific animal/object and house for it.

11. Introduce the activity- To introduce the activity I will read the story A House is a House for
Me and then ask them what are some other houses they can think of for animals or objects. After,
I will show them the page we will be writing on and show them that we are putting together a
book.
12. Pre-assessment- Based off of other activities I believe this activity will be much more
engaging for some students rather than others. Students who Ive seen using their imaginations
on a daily basis will enjoy this activity, but other students may have trouble coming up with
something on their own.
13. Steps- 1. Read book 2. Show the page/introduce activity 3. Call on students to complete
activity. 4. Complete activity
14. Closing- I will keep these pages to make them into a book then I will tell the children to
make another choice.
15. Back-up plans- If the students cant think of an idea on their own I will have the book A
House is a House for Me readily available for them to look through.
16. Extensions/Variations- To extend this activity I will read our class book to the class and show
them that it will be in our library if they want to read it.
