Tabernacle schools gear up for 2017

New superintendent Glenn Robbins looking forward to settling in
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Glenn Robbins started in his
role as Tabernacle schools superintendent in November. In 2017,
he is looking forward to getting to
know everyone in the community,
from kids to parents to staff to
resident stakeholders.
Robbins said one of his big
goals for the new year is to work
on redesigning the Kenneth R.
Olson Middle School library and
make it a central hub for Tabernacle. He feels the library could
be a real creative and digital
space for the district as well as a
welcoming area for all. The possibility of changing the name of
the space may be on the horizon
as well; Robbins used the
name digital playground as an example.

Another goal he would like to

work on is to prepare children for
their future, a future of technology. Noticing his son mastering
technology quickly at the age of 4
and seeing automated cars being
created, Robbins feels schools
should be preparing students for
their future starting with the
kindergarten level.
With that, he is looking into
digital playgrounds and maker
spaces, improving the iSTEM
rooms and 1-to-1 initiative in Tabernacle, and other ways to incorporate technology and learning.
Robbins would like to collaborate
with Seneca High School, and the
surrounding towns whose children will eventually attend the
high school, to look at curriculum
and see what can or needs to be
done so students will be better
prepared as they move toward the

future. He is working with the

township to get high speed internet to all of Tabernacle.
For his other goals of 2017, Robbins would like to review homework policies and look into building on events already at
the schools and making them better.
In November, the negotiations
between the Board of Education
Negotiations Committee and the
Tabernacle Education Association
on a new contract came to a standstill, and a state-appointed mediator was required. Robbins said a
mediation is set for January, and
he hopes this will help guide the
process forward. Robbins is excited to build collaboration with the
teachers and give them professional development so they can grow
stronger in their job and make
them feel appreciated.

in our opinion

Most moves involving New Jersey see people leaving the state
nother year has begun, and
another study has been released that shows New Jersey
is the top state in the nation that residents move out of.
United Van Lines 40th Annual National Movers Study tracks customers
state-to-state migration patterns over
the past year. The results showed that
63 percent of moves involving New Jersey were residents moving out of the
state, with only 37 percent of the
moves being inbound.
The top reasons for moving out of
the state include job (39.96 percent), retirement (30.29 percent) and lifestyle
(20.44 percent). Of all the residents
moving out of the state, 56.7 percent
are 55 years old or older.

Your thoughts
What do you think about New Jerseys tax
issues and how they affect our older residents? Share your thoughts in a letter.

This is a problem New Jersey has experienced for some time now. High
taxes, especially, make it difficult for
seniors to remain in their homes after
their children have grown and moved
out.
In their place are younger residents 43.72 percent of people moving
into New Jersey last year were 44 years
old and younger, according to the United Van Lines survey. And these people
are moving into our state mainly for a
job (56 percent) or for their family (23
percent).

Richard Donnelly

The irony, of course, is a main reason why people move into this state
for its excellent public schools is a
main reason why older people move
out because of the high property
taxes associated with those schools.
Its a catch 22 that New Jersey may
never truly solve. Good schools cost
money to run, and if theyre public
schools, a majority of that money is
going to come from the public.
The key is finding that balance between funding our schools properly
and not asking our residents to bear
too big a burden to do so. How can it be
fixed? By coming up with creative solutions to fund schools or, more appropriately, by finding ways to cut costs without cutting the quality of the product.

Corey comes to the board having been in
education for approximately 30 years. She
started as a science teacher before becoming a director of curriculum and instruction and, ultimately, an elementary school
principal. Her grandchildren now go to

I think my past experience in education
and administration is an asset, Corey
said. My philosophy is to put the kids

first.
Chamberlain has raised four kids
through the Tabernacle School District
and is a hands-on parent. She has been involved in almost 99 percent of school activities, she said with a laugh, and is the vice
president of the Tabernacle PTA.
I have first hand knowledge of what
goes on in the schools, Chamberlain said.
Both hope to bring different things to
the table as board members.
I want to make sure (we) provide the
best programs, Corey said.
My hopes and goals are to bring back
