European Union (EU) Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)

directive

The European Union's WEEE directive requires that products sold into EU countries must have
the crossed out trash bin label on the product (or the package in some cases).
As defined by the WEEE directive, this cross-out trash bin label means that customers and end-users
in EU countries should not dispose of electronic and electrical equipment or accessories in household
waste.
Customers or end-users in EU countries should contact their local equipment supplier representative or
service centre for information about the waste collection system in their country.

Description Overview
The MCD 5000 Deskset is a small-footprint radio dispatch console designed to satisfy the needs of
digital and analog radio users who require multiple dispatch points with enhanced talk/listen and interdispatcher intercom.
The MCD 5000 Deskset is the approximate size and shape of an office telephone set, with a
telephone-like handset that includes a PTT (Push to Talk) button. The handset microphone and
speaker become active when the handset is lifted from the housing base. The housing includes a builtin condenser microphone and an internal speaker.
Figure 1: MCD 5000 Deskset General View

An external desk paddle microphone or headset can be connected to the MCD 5000 Deskset. A
Headset Jack Box is used to connect a pair of prong plugs to interface the headset to an RJ-45 cable
connected to the headset Connector. An external footswitch can be connected to the MCD 5000
Deskset to enable hands free PTT and radio channel monitor ability.
The MCD 5000 Deskset supports the following features:

Perform radio calls

Deskset System Overview

The MCD 5000 Deskset is part of the MCD 5000 Deskset System. The unit is a desktop console that
provides dispatch capability when connected to a radio. The MCD 5000 Deskset user can select and
connect to one of many radios connected to the system for inbound/outbound communication.
The MCD 5000 Deskset System also serves as an intercom system between all parallel MCD 5000
Desksets connected to the same radio.
The MCD 5000 Deskset System can be operated in the following configurations:

System without an Operation and Management Center (OMC) (see Figure 2: MCD 5000 Deskset
System without an OMC on page 25

System with an OMC (see Figure 3: MCD 5000 Deskset System with an OMC on page 25

A system consists of the following components:

MCD 5000 Deskset
Phone-like device used by the end user for operating the MCD 5000 Deskset System. Each MCD
5000 Deskset connects to a single radio device at a time.
MCD 5000 Radio Gateway Unit (RGU)
The Radio Gateway units connect Radio equipment to the MCD 5000 Deskset System. The Radio
Gateway can interface up to four Radio devices.
Configuration Tool (CT)
The CT is a Windows-based utility, used to configure all parameters and settings of the MCD 5000
Deskset and the radio gateway. The CT can be located remotely anywhere on the IP network or
locally using Ethernet connection.
IP Network
This is the customer provided WAN/LAN IP Network.
Two-Way Radio Devices
Provide the access to the customer LMR system. The Radio control panel appears at the MCD
5000 Deskset as a Virtual Control Head in the lower part of the display.

The following radios can be controlled via the MCD 5000 Deskset:
-

ASTRO Consolette (W9): ASTRO Spectra, ASTRO Spectra Plus, XTL 5000

Operation And Maintenance Center Server (use only in systems with an OMC)
The OMC Server is a main management server in the MCD 5000 Deskset System. It is responsible
for the MCD 5000 Deskset System operation, maintenance, provisioning, and control. It is the
central repository, where all system users (administrators, technicians) and resources (MCD 5000,
and Radios) are registered, and where system-wide information (alarms, logs, audits) is stored. The
server runs on the Red Hat Linux operating system. The Administrator Control Panel (ACP) Client
PC provides a user level interface to the OMC. Because of its importance, the OMC Server can be
provided in a warm-standby redundant configuration.
Administrator Control Panel (ACP) Client Personal Computer (PC)
The ACP Client PC provides a user level interface to the OMC. It allows an administrator, located
locally to the OMC, or remotely anywhere on the customer WAN network to perform management
activities for the system. The ACP Client PC runs on the Microsoft Windows7 operating system.

2.4.1

Mounting the MCD 5000 Deskset on a Wall

Prerequisites: Wall mounting requires hanging the MCD 5000 Deskset using slots on the bottom side
of the Base and using the Base itself as a mounting template for the screw.
When and where to use: The MCD 5000 Deskset can be mounted onto any plaster, concrete, or
wood wall surfaces provided the appropriate hardware is used.
Procedure:
1 Orient the Base on the wall.
2 Using the Base as a template, mark points on the midline of the slots for the screw and remove
the Base.
3 Connect the Base to the MCD 5000 Deskset.
4 At the points, drill two holes in the wall, insert anchors, screw the wall mounting screws into the
anchors and stop when there is 3.2 mm (0.125 in.) between the screws heads and the wall.
5 Align the slot on the Base with the screws on the wall. Attach the MCD 5000 Deskset to the wall
and press downwards to lock the MCD 5000 Deskset into place.

Parallel Console in MCD 5000 System Usage Recommendations and

Expected Behavior
Consider the following recommendations when using the parallel console functionality in MCD 5000
Deskset System.

IPDS TX Monitor feature affects only MCD 5000 System dispatchers.

In a 4W full Duplex configuration, if the IPDS user presses PTT button during RX and starts
transmitting, then RX volume from internal speaker is reduced to 19.5 dBm to prevent a loopback
condition.

It is recommended to start talking ONLY when red LED is on.

Simultaneous incoming voice from parallel console and TRC radio may have the following effects:
-

The IPDS user can hear a small voice interruption (hole). The interruption happens as soon as
the console user releases the PTT button.

A failure to detect function tone may occur. For High Level Guard Tone and Low Level Guard
Tone, failures do not normally occur.
