2017 Goals
A roundtable discussion resulted in the following goals:

By the end of 2017, we will have working procedures for our team
to screen, assess, and properly diagnose autism.

Each month there will be a training topic from experienced

professionals to help us gain confidence in one or more of the
following:
o

Recognizing ASDs across the lifespan, especially in

children

Understanding validated interventions for ASD

We will have a website for the community members to access. It

will describe procedures and flowcharts for parents, educators
and professionals. It will have list of current resources specific to
our county. The site will be updated monthly to ensure

accessibility of resources. This is a link to its rudimentary beginning

There will be an autism education series developed by the end

of the year, for concerned parents or professionals seeking help
for behaviors. It will likely be over a 4-6 week span and cover
main topics such as: What is ASD? What is Behavior? What can I do
about challenging behaviors? Who is qualified to treat my childs
condition? What does a diagnosis mean? What is ABA?

We will consider reaching our Hispanic community and do our

best to make or use products with a Spanish option.

What does an ABA session look like?

There have been a lot of questions about Applied Behavior
Analysis [ABA] since our training in October. This month we
watched a few brief Youtube clips explaining or showing what a typical
ABA session can look like. As you watch or research, feel free to make a
list of questions for our January presenter, a Board Certified Behavior
Analyst. As you research online, you may read some negative reports
about ABA. Keep in mind ABA practitioners are trained in scientific,
validated principles of behavior change and adhere to strong ethical
guidelines protecting their clients from harm.

Creating Autism-Friendly Workspaces

Our group thought of some great ideas, and our chart is still under
construction. The Team will continue adding to it and will be available
