Inspired by a recent trip to the Smoky Mountains and the Appalachian crafts in the

Mountain Mall in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, this hat is a fast crochet project using super
bulky yarn. I approached this project more as a knitter would, from the brim up, instead
of from the top down. This pattern is written in American crochet terms. Two fun tassels
complete this whimsical hat.
This hat will fit an average adult head size of 20 - 23 inches.
Yarn: 1 skein Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick or 106 yards of any super bulky yarn
of your preference. However, I have made this hat several times and occasionally the
skeins run short while making the tassels ..so, it may be wise to buy 2 skeins or at least
have remnants from another project.
Hooks: US size L 8.0 mm, US size M/N 9.0
Notions: a large safety pin for marking your rounds, a yarn needle for finishing and
scissors
Gauge: The gauge isn't super critical, because it fits like a hood, but my gauge is 8
stitches and 10 rows = 4 inches in sc.
sc: single crochet - Insert hook under both top loops of stitch, yarn over, draw yarn
through stitch, yarn over, draw yarn through 2 loops on hook.
scbl: single crochet in back loop only - Insert hook under just the back loop of the stitch,
yarn over, draw yarn through stitch, yarn over, draw yarn through 2 loops on hook.

dec: decrease the next 2 stitches into 1 stitch - Insert hook under both top loops of next
stitch, yarn over, draw yarn through stitch, insert hook under both top loops of next
stitch, yarn over, draw yarn through stitch, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on
hook.
First you're going to build the ribbed brim..
Row 1: Using smaller hook chain 7 and sc into 2nd stitch from hook and in every chain
across (6 stitches)
Rows 2 - 54: chain 1, turn, scbl in every stitch
Now you are going to turn your work sideways and continue to along the length of this
piece. You are going to make 54 stitches along the length of this ribbing. You can either
place 1 stitch in every negative and positive ridge or I find it simpler to use the natural
hole along the top ridges of the ribbing and place 2 sc in each hole except the very last
one, I place 1 sc in the ridge hole and one in the last chain area.
Switch to larger hook.
Row 55: chain 1 and sc 54 stitches evenly across ribbing

Now you're going to begin decreasing to arch the sides and create the ear flaps.
Row 56: chain 1, turn, 1 sc in first stitch, dec in next 2 stitches, 1 sc in next stitch, dec in
next 2 st, sc in every stitch across until the last 6 stitches, dec in next 2 stitches, 1 sc in
next stitch, dec in next 2 stitches, 1 sc in next stitch (50 stitches remain)
Row 57: chain 1, turn, 1 sc in first stitch, dec in next 2 stitches, 1 sc in next stitch, dec in
next 2 st, sc in every stitch across until the last 6 stitches, dec in next 2 stitches, 1 sc in
next stitch, dec in next 2 stitches, 1 sc in next stitch (46 stitches remain)
Row 58: chain 1, turn, 1 sc in first stitch, dec in next 2 stitches, 1 sc in next stitch, dec in
next 2 st, sc in every stitch across until the last 6 stitches, dec in next 2 stitches, 1 sc in
next stitch, dec in next 2 stitches, 1 sc in next stitch (42 stitches remain)
Row 59: chain 1, turn, 1 sc in first stitch, dec in next 2 stitches, 1 sc in next stitch, dec in
next 2 st, sc in every stitch across until the last 6 stitches, dec in next 2 stitches, 1 sc in
next stitch, dec in next 2 stitches, 1 sc in next stitch (38 stitches remain)
Row 60: chain 1, turn, 1 sc in first stitch, dec in next 2 stitches, 1 sc in next stitch, dec in
next 2 st, sc in every stitch across until the last 6 stitches, dec in next 2 stitches, 1 sc in

next stitch, dec in next 2 stitches, 1 sc in next stitch (34 stitches remain)
Row 61: chain 1, turn, 1 sc in first stitch, dec in next 2 stitches, sc in every stitch across
until the last 3 stitches, dec in next 2 stitches, 1 sc in next stitch (32 stitches remain)
Rows 62 - 65: chain 1, turn, 1 sc in every stitch
Fold hat (insides together) and join in the round by placing a slip stitch in the stitch
opposite from your hook on the same row, now you are creating the back of the bonnet.
Use a safety pin to mark the first stitch, remove and replace as needed. These rows are
done in a spiral, there will be no chain stitch from round to round.
Row 66: 1 sc in same stitch as your slip stitch and 1 sc in every stitch around (32
stitches)
Row 67: (1 sc in the next 2 stitches, dec in the next 2 stitches) repeat (24 stitches
remain)
Row 68: (1 sc in the next stitch, dec in the next 2 stitches) repeat (16 stitches remain)
Row 69: (dec in the next 2 stitches) repeat (8 stitches remain)
Cut your yarn leaving about a 10 inch tail. Thread the end of the yarn thru a yarn needle
and pick up the edges of the remaining 8 stitches. Synch the hat up, bringing your tail to
the inside of the hat. Secure your tail and weave in your ends.
Now it's time to make the tassels..
Use the long side of a DVD case or a piece of cardboard about 8 inches long to create 2
tassels. I usually wrap the case about 20 times, then cut your yarn on the same end
where you began so both ends are on one side.
Take a length of yarn about 20 inches long and slide under the opposite edge of the
DVD case under the yarn. Tie in a double knot around the yarn to gather it into a bunch.
Slide your scissors under the ends of the yarn at the other side of the DVD case. Cut
the ends to free the tassel from the case.
Take another 20 inch length of yarn and give your tassel a "head" by knotting it about
an inch under the top of the tassel. Bring the ends of this piece up and over the loop
around the head so they blend in with the rest of the tassel.
Now tie these two tassels to the corners of your hat and bring the tails down thru your

tassel as well. Trim the ends as needed.
