Beauty table from old sewing machine / Mesa de belleza con vieja maquina de coser

One day I woke up thinking that I was close to celebrate my 4th wedding anniversary so I started a hard
task... thinking of a present for my wife. LOL! fortunately, few days before we found an old structure from an
antique sewing machine and my wife thought it good be good to recycle it and add a piece of glass of
10mm to make a table.
Searching on the web for possible ideas of colors and stuff I found this beautiful idea for her anniversary
present.... a BEAUTY TABLE!!!!! Something to have all her make-up and beauty devices all together in the
same place... PLUS I can have the toilet neat and the mirror free!!!!! LOL!

tarea... pensar en que regalarle a mi esposa. jaja! Por suerte, unos dias antes encontramos con ella unas
viejas patas de una maquina de coser antigua y mi esposa que sera muy lindo recuperarla y ponerles un
vidrio grueso encima para hacer una mesa.
Buscando en internet posibles combinaciones de colores para mi mesa encontr una hermosa idea para
regalarle a mi mujer... UNA MESA DE BELLEZA!!!!! Algo donde poder tener todos sus maquillajes,
esmaltes y artefactos juntos en un solo lugar... Y ENCIMA yo puedo tener el antebao ordenado y el
espejo libre!!! JAJA!

Step 1: Dissembling and sanding the machine / Desarme y arenado/lijado de la maquina

I decided to paint the metal parts in aluminum color, and the wooden parts in white. As you may know,
whenever you want to re-pain something, you need to sand it, take all the rust and old paint away, and
leave the surfaces as clean as possible.
I have no pics of the machine from the time I bought it, but the metal frame was rusty and the original paint
was damaged. So I was planning to clean it myself and bought a brush to be used with a grinder. After 20
minutes of working on the legs and checking on the results, and after calling to some places asking for the
cost of sanding, I decided that taking the metal pieces to an industrial sander would be a great Idea
totally inexpensive compared to the hard work and time It would have meant to make it myself.
So It was time to start with the wooden parts. Dissembling each part made sanding way easier. As you can
see in the 2nd, the top layer of the wood was a bit damaged, so once it was separated and completely
sanded I used some plaster to fill the little gaps open between the wood fibers and cover all kind of
imperfections the old wood might have had (have no pics of it either). Once the plaster was completely dry,
I sanded again to leave the surface as smooth as possible.
Note that the top cover originally opened to the side, so, as I need it to open to the back I changed the
position of the hinges.
-------------------------Decid pintar las partes metlicas en color aluminio y las de madera en blanco. como ya saben cuando
quieren re-pintar algo, debemos lijarlo y limpiarlo de toda suciedad de enrumbre y pinturas viejas lo mas
posible.
No tengo fotos de cuando compr la maquina pero la estructura metlica estaba enrumbada y la pintura
daada. Compr un cepillo metlico para usar con la amoladora y luego de 20 minutos de trabajo y ver los

resultados, y luego de llamar a un par de empresas, decid llevar las patas directamente a una casa de
arenados industriales donde por un bajo costo, me salv del duro y largo trabajo de cepillado.
Ya trabajando sobre la madera, desensambl todas las piezas para que sea ms fcil lijarlas. Como se
puede ver en la 2 foto, el laminado de arriba de la tapa estaba daado as que us un poco de masilla de
yeso para cubrir las grietas de entre las fibras de la madera vieja. Una vez seco, lij toda la masilla para
dejarlo lo ms liso y parejo posible.
Fjense que originalmente la tapa abra hacia un costado por ende, como yo necesitaba que abriera hacia
atrs, tuve que cambiar la posicin de las bisagras.

Step 2: Painting and decorating / Pintar y Decorar.

After cleaning all the dust from sanding off the surfaces, I started painting all the parts. For the
metal parts (legs and hinges) I used a 3 in 1 synthetic enamel, a kind of paint that is anti-rust, anticorrosive and sealer. I chose aluminum color to make it look natural, but Im not so pleased with
the result, I may change it perhaps. LOL!
For the wood, I chose white synthetic enamel in spray since Im not so good with paint brushes
LOL! Using brushes reduce the cost of paints like in +75 %. A tin of paint costs $35 +$15 the
brush total $50, while I spent $220 in 3 large sprays (2 is ok if you are an expert spray painter
LOL).
After finishing the painting, I wanted to make look different... the all-white thing wasnt good to me,
so I search on the internet for DECOUPAGE, a technique used to paste patterned napkins on
surfaces to give them a better look. Check on this video to get to know about this

I am totally pleased with the final result. I decorated the visible sides of the drawers, and the inner
side of the top where the mirror will be fixed.
-------------------Despus de limpiar y sacar todo el polvo del lijado, comenc a pintar las piezas. Para las partes
metlicas compr un esmalte sinttico 3 en 1, anti-corrosivo, anti-oxido, y sellador. eleg color
aluminio para mantener el color metlico pero no estoy muy contento con el resultado... asi que
seguramente lo cambie... ALGUN DIA jajajajaj!!!!
Para la madera us esmalte sinttico blanco en aerosol ya que no soy muy bueno usando
pinceles. Usar pincel reducira los gastos de pintura en un 75% aprox. una lata de 250cm3 cuesta
$35 y el pincel $15, total $50, mientras que yo me gast $220 en 3 latas grandes de pintura en
spray. (Con 2 latas est bien si eres un experto usando pintura en spray)
Despus de tener todo pintado, quise darle un toque diferente... la cosa toda blanca no me
convenca as que entr a internet a ver algo de decoupage, una tcnica que consta de pegar
servilletas de papel en cosas para mejorar su vista. Vean el link de arriba para saber de qu se
trata.
Estoy muy contento con el resultado final. decor las partes visibles de los cajones y solo la parte
interior de la tapa donde qued puesto el vidrio.

Step 3: Assembling and finishing the work.

After everything was painted, decorated and ready, I have some pro fixing the mirror on the top
cover. For that they used neutral silicone, but I also ask them to fix some metal supports on each
side on the mirror since the top will suffer constant movement (open-close) and I dont want my
wife to be injured by a loose mirror yet! LOL!
Then I screwed back all hinges, fix the top cover hinges in their new position, and
TAH DAH!!!!
A BEAUTY TABLE for my wife to have all her beauty stuff in place. As you can see in the last
picture, the paint sprays are still inside the table in order for you see how big it is to hold the
curling iron, flat iron, brushes, make-up bags, cream pots and all her beauty at hand LOL!!!!!!

----------------------------------Despus de tener todo pintado, decorado y listo, unos profesionales pusieron el espejo en la tapa
del mueble. Para eso usaron silicona neutra, pero tambin les ped que le pusieran unos soportes
de metal en cada costado del espejo ya que la tapa va a tener mucho movimiento de abrir y
cerrar, y no quiero que mi esposa termine herida por un espejo suelto..... Todava! JAJAJA!
Luego puse las bisagras en su lugar con sus tapas, acomod la tapa en su nueva posicin y...
LISTO!!!!!
UNA HERMOSA MESA DE BELLEZA para mi esposa para tener todo su equipo de belleza
ordenado. Como pueden ver en la ltima foto, los sprays de pintura todava estn dentro de la
mesa para que puedan ver el tamao de la misma, lo suficientemente grande para guardar la
planchita del pelo, la bucleadora, cepillos, bolsos de maquillaje, potes de crema, y toda su belleza
a mano, jajaja!!
