CE140-0P A2 (Mechanics of Fluids)
Homework No. 1 Properties of Fluids and Principle of Hydrostatics
1. Determine the pressure difference between points A and B. Use S BENZENE = 0.88,
SMERCURY = 13.6, SKEROSENE = 0.82.

2. A manometer is attached to a
vertical pipe as shown.
Calculate the pressure
difference between point A
and B. Express your answer
in pounds per square foot.

3. Calculate the weight of the

piston if the gage pressure
reading is 70.0 kPa.

4. A manometer is attached
to

pipe

to

measure

pressure.

Calculate

pressure

at

the

point

A.

Express your answer in

pounds per square inch.

5. A hydraulic jack shown is

filled with oil at 55 lb/ft3.
Neglecting the weight of the
two pistons, what force F on
the handle is required to
support the 2200 lb weight?
Express

your

answer

in

pounds.

6. The glass tube is used to measure p1 in the

water tank. The tube diameter is 1 mm and
the water is at 300C. After correcting for
surface tension, what is the true water height
in the tube? Express

your answer in

centimeters. Use the WATER = 996 kg/m3.

7. At 600C, the surface tension of mercury and water is 0.47 and 0.0662 N/m,
respectively. What capillary height changes will occur in these two fluids when
they are in contact with air in clean glass tube of diameter 0.04 mm? Express
your answer in millimeters.
8. A certain gasoline weighs 46.5 lb/ft3. What are the mass density, specific volume
and specific gravity? NOTE: Specific volume is just the reciprocal of mass
density.
9. An object at a certain location has a mass of 2.0 kg and weighs 19.0 N on a
spring balance. What is the acceleration due to gravity? Express your answer in
m/s2.
10. A piston of weight 21 lb, height 5 inches and diameter 6 inches slides in a
lubricated pipe. The clearance between piston and pipe is 0.001 in. If the piston
decelerates at 2.1 ft/s2 when the speed is 21 ft/s, what is the viscosity of the oil?
