INTRODUCTION
The principal mechanical properties required in stones are satisfactory resistance to crushing under the roller during
construction and adequate resistance to surface abrasion under traffic.

BEC 307 HIGHWAY LABORATORY

Aggregates used in road construction, should be strong enough to resist crushing under traffic wheel loads. If the
aggregates are weak, the stability of the pavement structure is likely to be adversely affected. The strength of coarse
aggregates is assessed by aggregates crushing test. The crushing value provides a relative measure of resistance to
crushing under a gradually applied compressive load. To achieve a high quality of pavement, aggregate possessing
low aggregate crushing value should be preferred.
The aggregates crushing value gives a relative measure of the resistance of an aggregate to crushing under a
gradually applied compressive load. It is the percentage by weight of the crushed (or finer) material obtained when
the test aggregates are subjected to a specified load under standardized conditions, and is a numerical index of the
strength of the aggregate used in the road construction. Aggregates with lower crushing value indicate a lower
crushed fraction under the load and would give a longer service life to the road and hence a more economical
performance. Weaker aggregates if used would get crushed under traffic loads, would produce smaller pieces not
coated with binder and these would be easy displaced or loosened out resulting in loss of the surface/layer. In short,
the aggregates used in road construction must be strong enough to withstand crushing under traffic.

OBJECTIVE
The objective of this test is:

To ascertain the hardness of aggregate in terms of Aggregate Crushing Value.

To determine the aggregate crushing value of coarse aggregate.

APPARATUS

BEC 307 HIGHWAY LABORATORY

o Open ended steel cylinder of nominal 150mm internal diameter with plunger and base plate
o A temping rod 16mm diameter and 600mm long.
o Compression testing machine which is capable of applying force of 400kN.
o Cylindrical metal measures for measuring the sample.
o 10mm size of aggregate sample
o Weight 3kg minimum capacity.
o BS sieve of sizes 14mm, 10mm and 2.36mm.

PROCEDURE
1. The weight of cylinder is measured by using weighing apparatus.
2. The aggregate samples are filled in thirds into the cylinder where each third is subjected to 25 blows from the
temping rod.
3. The surface of cylinder is leveled and the plunger is inserted.
4. The weight of aggregate sample with cylinder is measured again by using weighing apparatus.
5. The sample is placed between the plates of the testing machine and it is loaded in a uniform rate so that the
required 400kN is reached in 10 20 minutes.
6. The load is then released and the crushed material is removed.

7. The removed material is sieved on the 2.36mm sieves and the weight of the fraction passing the sieve is
measured.

SAFETY AND PRECAUTION

Food and beverages are prohibited in the lab.

Wear lab jacket, shoes and long pant at all time when inside the lab.

Use laboratory equipment for its designed purpose.

Long hair and loose clothing have to be confined.

Ensure the laboratory supervisor is informed of any dangerous condition.

Wear the mask before running the experiment.

Be careful when operate the load test machine.

DISCUSSION AND RECOMENDATION

Discussion:
Sample can expel from the mould because the mould not closed mould can affected the error
measuring reading.
Heavy crushing mould and machine may not relevance to do the work outside the laboratory.
Recommendation:

In this experiment, we are using 2780g of 14mm size of aggregates sample. The weight of aggregate passing the
2.36mm sieve was 560g and the weight of aggregate retained on the 2.36mm sieve was 2220g.
The aggregate crushing value that we obtained from the experiment is about 20.1%. We are satisfied with this value
since it is lower than the ASTM requirement, which is 35%.
Hence, we recommend that this type of aggregate is suitable use to construct the highway road and can withstand
heavy traffic load.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, the aggregate crushing value that we obtained from the test is about 18.05%. We are satisfied with this
value since the percentage of aggregate crushing value is less than the standard value of 35%.
Hence, this type of aggregates are the suitable materials to sustain the heavy traffic load.
