Basic Terminologies:
Random experiment : An experiment whose
outcomes are not known in advance.
Sample space: In a random experiment, the set
of all possible outcomes of interest (to the
experimenter) is referred to as the sample space.
Usually denoted (read omega).
Experiment: Tossing a coin twice
Sample space: = {(H, H),(H, T),(T, H),(T, T)}
Probability Measure:
Given an (, F), a probability measure P is a real-valued function
on the events in F (i.e.,P : F R) satisfying the following axioms:
1. 0 = < P(A) < = 1 for all A F,
2. P() = 1, and
3. If A and B are two disjoint sets in F, then P(A B) = P(A) +
P(B). (Same applicable for more than 2 disjoint sets)
Example: Tossing a coin: = {H, T} & F ={{H, T}, {H}, {T}, }
P({H, T}) = 1, P({H}) = 0.5, P({T}) = 0.5, and P() = 0 is a
probability measure.
In general, P({H, T}) = 1, P({H}) = p, P({T}) = 1 p, and P() = 0
is a probability measure for any p [0, 1].
Independence
Events A and B are said to be independent if
P(A B) = P(A)P(B).
Similarly, events A, B and C are said to be independent if the
following holds:
P(A B C) = P(A)P(B)P(C)
P(A B) = P(A)P(B)
P(A C) = P(A)P(C)
P(B C) = P(B)P(C).
In general, A1, A2, , An are said to be independent if every subcollection of these events ( of size greater than
2) are independent,
function of , i.e., X : R.
Properties of CDF :
1. F is non-decreasing
2. Lim F(x) =1
x->
and
Lim F(x) = 0
x-> -
3. F is right continuous.
pX (x) = P(X = x)
P(X=0)= 1 - p
Representation: X Ber(p)
where p [0, 1] (sometimes referred to as the
success probability)
PMF :
P(X= k) = (1 p)^(k-1) * p,
k= 1,2,.......
Properties of Variance:
