Use of Traditional Elements ina Contemporary manner
Many elements of this thermally adaptive environment borrow from the tradition of passive cooling techniques prevalent inthe hot-dry desert climate of
Rajasthan, The design takes two almost inviolable Rajasthani architectural matfs and gives them a contemporary twist: the stone screen known as the
"Jaa and the open-to-sky courtyard, The building is protected from the environment by a double skin which is derived from the ‘Jal’. The double skin
facts as a thermal buffer between the building and the surroungings. The densiy ofthe perforated outer skin has been derived using computational
shadow analysis based on orientation of the fagades. The outer skin sits 4 fest away from the building and reduces the direct heat gain through
fenestrations, Drip channels running along the inner face ofthe screen allow for passive downdraft evaporative cooling, thus reducing the incident wind

Environmental design is elso employed as a strategy to lower eneray costs
in the long run. Passive climate control methods reduce/eliminate the
‘dependence on expensive mechanical cooling and heating methods in a
slate with scarce resources. The traditional courtyards take on amorphous
shapes within the regulated form ofthe cloiste-like periphery. The shaded
urtyards help control the temperature of intemal spaces and open
stop-wells, while allowing sufficient daylighting inside studios and
classrooms.
During the night, when the desert temperature drops, this floor slowly
dissipates the heat to the surroundings, keeping the area thermally
‘comfortable, Materials such as local stone, mosaic flocrng with stl, glass
‘and concrete help met the climatic needs ofthe region while retaining the
progressive design intent, keeping in line with the aims of the insitute
Rainwator harvesting is promoted and wastewater ro-cyciing is done
through the use of a sewage treatment plant

“The entire building is raised over the ground and the resultant scooped-out underbelly forms a natural thermal sink by way of a water body. The water
bbody which is fed by the recycled water from the sewage treatment plant helps in the creation of a microcimate through evaporative cooling. This
underbelly, is thermally banked on all sides, serves as a large recreation and exhibition zone. Passive environmental design helps achieve
temperatures of about 27 degree Celsius inside the building even when the outside temperatures are at 47 degree Celsius.
