Introduction
Distribution models of umbrella species have been used as a shortcut to
identify areas that need special protection, select conservation priorities,
and create management tools in the absence of specific biodiversity
information or other ecosystem functionality criteria (Simberloff 1998). We
review the distribution of nine vertebrate species that can be used as
umbrella species in a conservation planning approach, in the Corredor
Trinacional de Conservacin, and evaluate the species habitat quality change
in area under different species distribution approaches: Ecosystem as
proxies for habitat [total], extent of ocurrance [extent], species distribution
models [SDM] .

Materials and methods

We construct the extent of occurrence and the species distribution model of
nine species used as umbrella species in the Corredor Trinacional. The habitat
was analyzed using the habitat quality model incorporated in the InVEST
Geographic Tool. The sensitivity and threats magnitude valuation was
constructed using data from local perception and existing bibliography. The
boundaries of the analysis and definition of habitat was made using the species
distribution and ecological relationship with ecosystems.
We examined temporal scenarios of habitat quality loss between the years
1990 and 2010, and evaluate differences between sets of terrestrial and
aquatic umbrella species.

Recommendations
Include in the habitat quality model the surrogate species concept
Incorporate in the habitat quality models, species distribution data to
improve management tools in Natural Parks
Reinforce management strategies in areas of umbrella species presence
with low habitat quality and high levels of habitat degradation
Relate species with different functional traits to improve the umbrella
species management approach
Select species that allow to understand regional priorities
