Its never too late to unleash your talents.

This booklet brings forth detailed information about various competitive


examinations (non-medical) that provides an opportunity to students while
they sail through classes VI to XII. In a way, it mentally prepares both the
students and parents for the challenges and goals for a bright future. The
detailed, class wise information helps the student to know about the exams
he/she has to prepare for, right from the class he / she is presently studying in.
What follows is an account of the details of various competitive examinations
that offer a golden opportunity to students presently studying at secondary
and senior secondary level (VI to XII). Furthermore, an attempt has been
made to classify the target competitive examinations corresponding to the
class in which the student would be eligible.
All the dates, fees and any gure mentioned in the booklet are as per the
current / previous academic year for your kind reference. The dates and fees
details for forthcoming academic year are not available as of now. Generally
the dates are near about the same period every year.

1.

Junior Science Olympiad By HBCSE


(Although its little early to appear in Olympiad for a child studying in class VII, but yes preparation of Junior
Science Olympiad is started in class VII itself.)

Stage I - National Standard Exam in Junior Science - NSEJS:

It is conducted by IAPT (Indian Association of Physics Teachers)

Eligibility : There is an age criteria, kindly refer to HBCSE website

Form are available from the month of July

Form to be submitted from the month of September

Exam : It is conducted generally in the month of November

Syllabus for NSEJS will be broadly equivalent to secondary school level (utpo X) of CBSE. The
different basic subjects of science (P,C,B & M) will have roughly equal emphasis.

NSEJS (Stage I) The question paper will be of generally 240 marks and will contain Phy, Chem
& Bio upto CBSE class X level. Generally there are 80 MCQs (3 marks each & with negative marks
for wrong answers).

Sample papers & previous question papers are also available on the website.

Top 300 students will be called for (Stage - II Examination) INO (INJSO) conducted by HBCSE. In
case there is a tie at the last position, all students with the same marks at this last position qualify
for INJSO.

All the students who qualify to appear for INJSO get a certicate of merit from IAPT.

Stage II : INJSO

Organized by HBCSE in collaboration with IAPT

Eligibility: Approximately top 300 students qualied in NSEJS. Individual letters will be sent to
these students informing that they have to appear for INJSO.

Exam: Exam is conducted generally in January

It will be organized at about 15 centres in the country.

Students appearing for INJSO will be eligible for TA/DA as per norms of the programe.

Syllabus: It will be broadly similar to NSEJS.

Questions and problems in National Olympiads are usually non-conventional and of high difculty
level, comparable to International Olympiads.

Challenges you will face in Class VII

Result is expected in the month of March

Approximately top 30 students chosen on the basis of their performance at INJSO will be invited
to attend Stage III - Orientation Cum Selection Camp (OCSC) in respective discipline for about
2-3 weeks of HBCSE, Mumbai.

There will be no other criterion or provision for selection to OCSC.

In the event, there is a tie at the last position, all students with same marks at this last position
will qualify for OCSC in Junior Science.

Stage III : OCSC

The camp will include several theoretical and experimental tests. Orientation will be provided to
students especially in experiments.

The camp will conclude with a valedictory function where distinguished scientists will be invited to
speak to the students.

The merit list of OCSC will be prepared on the basis of the combined theoretical and experimental
score aggregated over all the test in the camp, with 60% weightage for theory and 40% weightage
for experiment.

Performance in previous stages (NSEJS and INJSO) will not be a consideration for the merit list
and awards of OCSC.

Approx. Top 6 in OCSC Junior Science Merit List will be declared to be special merit awardees.

These special merit awardees will be given Approx Rs 5,000/- each in the form of books and
cash. In addition, there will be special prizes to recognize meritorious performance in theory and
experiments.

Approx. 6 special merit awardees in Junior Science selected


at the end of OCSC will constitute 6 member student team for
International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) 2010, provided they
satisfy required criteria such as age limit, holding valid Indian
passport, medical tness, parental consent, etc.

Stage IV : Pre-departure Training (PDT) Camp

The selected students will undergo a rigorous training program at


HBCSE in theory and experiment.

Resource persons from HBCSE and different institutions across the country will train the
students.

Stage V : Participation in IJSO.

The selected students and teacher leaders will constitute the delegation to represent India at
IJSO.

The details about venue and dates for IJSO can be checked from there website. Tentatively it is
conducted in the month of December.

After nal selection, medals will be awarded with certicate.

Aryabhatta Math Exam

It is conducted by Chanakya Shikshan Sanstha, Jalgaon (Mah.)


only for Mathematics subject.

Any student can appear for this exam. No age limit.

Students have to enroll for it.

There is no any state quota.

Internal Exam:

The internal exam of Part-I & Part-II will be generally out of 50 marks each.

Candidates will get chapterwise question paper with course material.

Candidates should have solve approximately ve papers chapter-wise paper for Part-I & Part-II
respectively and he/she should send these papers to Chanakya Shikshan Prasharak Sanstha,
Jalgaon (Mah.)

Candidates may also send these papers within the period of 3 months.

Expert teachers will check these papers and the best ve papers for Part-I & Part-II respectively
will be selected from these papers.

After checking these papers the result will be declared.

Each paper has approximately 10 marks.

Internal Exam will be of approximately 100 marks out of it candidate should have obtained
approximately 50 marks. Then candidate will be considered as Pass.

External Exam:

Enrolled candidates will be permitted for examination after four months.

Candidates may also permitted for exam within 15 days after four month of enrollment.

Candidates will get external exam question papers on his e-mail account in the form of
attachment.

Candidates will also get plane papers (writing paper) with course material to solve question
paper.

After scanning the solved paper, candidates should send that attachment within six hours to
following email chanyakya_math@yahoo.com, aryabhatta_math@yahoo.com

External exam will be of approximately 100 marks out of it candidates should have obtained
approximately 50 marks. Then candidates will be considered as Pass.

National Talent Search Exam (NTSE)

It is conducted by NCERT (Govt. organization)

Eligibility: For class VIII studying (Secured min 65% marks in class VII during 2010-11).

Notication: Generally in the month of June

Last Date of Receiving application form: Generally in the month of August

The completed application form duly signed by Principal of school should be submitted to Liaison
Ofcers/concerned district ofcial of the State before last date.

Stage I (State Level) Exam: Generally in November.

Only selected candidates will be called for Stage II exam.

Stage II (National Level) Exam: Generally in May

Written paper contains two parts: MAT & SAT (covering Social Studies, Science & Maths).

Scholarships: On the basis of exam conducted, approx. 1000 scholarships will be awarded for each
group of students for class VIII exams. The amount of scholarship will be approx Rs 500/- per
month as per NTS rules. This assistance will given upto Post Graduation.

Earlier NTSE used to have interview in nal stage to


decide scholarship, which has been scrapped w.e.f.
2011.

International Green Olympiad

It is Indias rst environment Olympiad for schools.

Conducted by The Energy & Resource Institute (TERI)


Govt. organization (Ministry of Environment & Forest)

Eligibility: Class VIII to X.

Forms Available : Generally from the month of July

25% of the question will be based on the theme Biodiversity & Environment

Individual registration from students will not be accepted

Registration through online with fee of Rs. 40/- (last year) through DD in favour of TERI, New
Delhi.

The examination can be taken either in English or Hindi.

Schools can register themselves with a minimum of 20 students. Roll numbers will be notied to
the schools. These will also be posted on the project website.

Challenges you will face in Class VIII

Preparation of Exam:

Read as many articles as you can on environmental issues in magazines, newspapers, books,

journals, encyclopedias. You can watch channels such as Discovery, Animal Planet & National
Geographic.

You could order a copy of six volumes of GREEN Olympiad & TERRAQUIZ (knowledge books on

environment) through website.

Exam : Generally conducted in the month of September.

Result in generally declared in the month of Oct. on website and mark list along the certicates will
be dispatched to the schools.

Schools are encouraged to keep themselves updated by checking at www.teriin.org/olympiad.

All participants will receive certicates from Ministry of Environment and Forests, Govt. of India.
Merit & Distinction certicates are also given to top performers.

National Informatics Olympiad

It is conducted by CBSE in collaboration with the Indian Association for


Research in Computing Science (IARCS), Mumbai across the country and
abroad.

The examination is in two stages.

Eligibility: It is open to all the students of Classes VIII to XII studying in


schools afliated to CBSE as well as other boards in the country.

Registration: The desirous students should have to apply through their


schools with a nominal fee of Rs 100/-(Last year) generally in the month
of November for the rst stage examination. A consolidated DD for all the
participants of a school may be drawn in favour of Secretary, CBSE, Delhi.

No admit card or roll number will be issued. Instead, when candidates go to write the examination,
they should carry with them a bonade certicate with their photograph attested by the principal
of their school.

First stage examination (Zonal Informatics Olympiad):

Exam :Generally conducted in the month of December.

It is a written examination to test the aptitude of the students, their logical competence,

problem-solving skills, and critical thinking.

Second Stage Examination (Indian National Olympiad in Informatics INOI)

The candidates who qualify in the rst stage examination as per the norms prescribed by the

selection committee will appear in the second stage examination.

Exam: Generally conducted in the month of January

It will be based on programming skills.

Students interested in INOI are strongly encouraged to work through the problems available on

the ICO Online Judge. Student can submit their solutions to these problems online and get instant
feedback about their performance.

Selected candidates will be called for intensive training for the nal selection of the candidates for
the International Olympiad in Informatics.

Eligibility: For class IX studying (Secured min 65% marks in class VIII)

Exam Pattern: Objective type with no negative marking for wrong answers. Syllabus based on CBSE.

Result: Generally declared in the month of March

Successful candidates will be called for Final Interview generally in the month of July

Mathematics Olympiad

It is one of the most glamorous exam.

This has four stages (rst two stages are written test followed by camp and nally to the International
Stage)

Student has to qualify every stage to participate into the next stage.

Stage I : Regional Mathematics Olympiad, RMO

Organized by HBCSE on behalf of Mathematics National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM) of


Department of Atomic Energy.

Eligibility: IX to XII (special talented students from class VIII can also apply with very strong
recommendation from their schools)

For the purpose of administering Mathematics Olympiad contests, the country has been divided in
23 regions. Every region has coordinators, in addition to this, three groups. CBSE, NVS, KVS have
reginal coordinator each.

Application form generally available from 1st week of August (depends on regional Co-ordinator).

Challenges you will face in Class IX

Last Date of Receiving application form : Generally in last week of October.

Fee is approx Rs. 75/- per candidate.

Exam: Generally conducted in the last week of November.

RMO is a 3 hour written test containing about 6-7 problems.

Selected students from there respective regions have 15 appear for Stage-II (INMO).

Note:

IITs also arranges preparatory classes for RMO by previous years successful students for selected
brilliant candidates.

IITs takes selection test for this preparatory camp (like


at IIT-D under guidance of Prof. Amitabh Tripathi (Sr.
Prof., Mathematics Dept.) selected IITian who qualied in
Olympiad and got medals, take classes in this camp.

Stage II: Indian National Mathematics Olympiad, INMO

Exam: Generally conducted in the month of January.

Eligibility all RMO qualiers

INMO is a 4-hour written test. The question paper is set centrally and is common throughout the
country.

The top 30-35 performers in INMO receive a certicate of merit.

Stage III: International Mathematics Olympiad Training Camp, IMOTC

The INMO certicate awardees will be invited to a one month training camp during May-June

Eligibility: top 30-35 INMO certied awardees

Stage IV: International Mathematics Olympiad, IMO

Exam: Generally conducted in the month of July.

Best six students selected for pool of Senior and Junior batch participants and represents India.

IMO consists of two written tests held on two days with a gap of at least one day. Each test is of
four-and-a-half-hours duration.

Students of Indian team who receive gold, silver and bronze medals at IMO receive a cash prize
of Rs. 5,000/-, Rs. 4,000/- and Rs. 3,000/- respectively, from NBHM during the following year at
a formal ceremony at the end of the training camp.

Group Mathematics Olympiad (GMO)

It is another way a student can participate in Mathematics Olympiad. But here, only best and selected
students by school can participate.

It is conducted by CBSE.

Fee is Rs. 35/- per candidate (Last Year).

Last date of receiving application form: is generally last week of October

Exam : Generally conducted in the month of November

A school can send maximum top 5 students who can represent school for the selection at GMO.

Papers of RMO & GMO are same.

CBSE will select candidates, strictly on merit in all India bossies. Only the selected candidates will be
informed and will be eligible to appear Stage-II (INMO) conducted by NBHM.

From Stage II, it is merged with INMO, i.e. student can go to INMO either through RMO or through
GMO.

Stage I : National Standard Examination (NSE) in Phy, Chem, Bio & Astronomy

Conducted by Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT)

Eligibility : There is an age criteria, kindly refer to there ofcial website.

NSEP, NSEC, NSEB, NSEA(Sr.) question paper will be of 240 marks each. Each paper is divided into

Approx Top 300 students of NSE for every subject will be called for (Stage - II Examination) INO
(INPhO, INChO, INBO) conducted by HBCSE. In case there is a tie at the last position, all students
with the same marks at this last position qualify for INO.

Stage II : INO (INPhO, INChO & INBO, INAO)

Organized by HBCSE in collaboration with IAPT, IACT, IATBS.

Eligibility: Approx

Top 300 students qualied in NSE. Individual letters will be sent to these

students informing that they have to appear for INO.

Exam : Generally is conducted in January

It will be organized at about 15 centres in the country.

Students appearing for INO will be eligible for TA/DA as per norms of the programe.

Syllabus: It will be broadly similar to NSE.

Questions and problems in National Olympiads are usually nonconventional and of high difculty level, comparable to International
Olympiads.

Result is generally declared in the month March

Top 35 students chosen on the basis of their performance at INO will be


invited to attend Stage III - Orientation Cum Selection Camp (OCSC) in
respective discipline for about 2-3 weeks of HBCSE, Mumbai.

In the event, there is a tie at the last position, all students with same
marks at this last position will qualify for OCSC in Science (P,C,B).

There will be no other criterion or provision for selection to OCSC.

Stage III : Orientation Cum Selection Camp (OCSC)

The camp will include several theoretical and experimental tests. Orientation will be provided to
students especially in experiments.

The camp will conclude with a valedictory function where distinguished scientists will be invited to
speak to the students.

The merit list of OCSC will be prepared on the basis of the combined theoretical and experimental
score aggregated over all the test in the camp, with 60% weightage for theory and 40% weightage
for experiment.

Performance in previous stages (NSE and INO) will not be a consideration for the merit list and
awards of OCSC.

Approx Top 6 in OCSC Merit List will be declared to be special merit awardees.

These special merit awardees will be given Rs 5,000/- each in the form of books and cash. In addition,
there will be special prizes to recognize meritorious performance in theory and experiments.

The 5 special merit awardees in Phy., Chem. & Bio selected at the end of OCSC will constitute the
6 member student team for International Science Olympiad (ISO), provided they satisfy required
criteria such as age limit, holding valid Indian passport, medical tness, parental consent, etc.

Stage IV : Pre-departure Training (PDT) Camp

The selected 5 member student team will undergo a rigorous training program at HBCSE in theory
and experiment.

Resource persons from HBCSE and different institutions across the country will train the
students.

Stage V : Participation in International Science Olympiad (Phy, Chem, Bio & Astronomy)

The 4 to 5 member student team and 2 teacher leaders with 1 scientic observer will constitute
the delegation to represent India .

Kishore Vaigyanik Protshahan Yojna (KVPY)

It is a single stage exam followed by interview.

Organized by department of Science & Technology

Eligibility (Stream SA): Students enrolled in class XI (Science subject) and have secured a minimum of
80% (previous year) marks in aggregate in PCMB in class X Board.
(Stream SB+2): Students enrolled in class 12 (+2) join Under-graduate program in Basis Science
(B.Sc./Int.M.Sc.) provided they secured a minimum of 80% (previous year) marks in aggregate in
PCMB in class X Board.
(Stream SB): Students enrolled in 1st year of B.Sc./Int. M.Sc. and have secured a min. 60% (Previous
Year) marks in aggregate in SCIENCE subjects in class XII Board.

Application form are available in generally in June

Last Date of receiving application form: Generally in the month of September

Exam fees: Rs. 200/- through pay-in-slip (Previous Year)

Course Name: B.Sc (Hons.) in Statistics/Mathematics (3 year academic

readmission into this program.

Candidates for the above programs, who have qualied for INMO test
conducted by NBHM, need not to sit for the written test, such candidates
would be directly called for interview. However, such candidates are
required to apply in the prescribed application form.

Initiative for Research & Innovation in Science (IRIS)

It is conducted by Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India.

IRIS has participants from across the country converging at the National level Fair. Projects short-listed
from the National Fair represent India at Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF).

Intel ISEF is the worlds largest pre-collegiate celebration of science. Held annually in May, Intel ISEF
brings together more than 1,200 students from over 40 nations to compete for over 900 prizes. There
is US$ 2 million to be won including scholarships, tution grants, internships, scientic eld trips and the
grand prize: a trip to attend the Nobel Prize Ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden.

Eligibility to participate:

Category I: Vth to VIIIth

Category II: IXth to XIIth


If student who have an idea that is original and innovative,

are eligible to participate, individually or in a team of 2.

Scientic Review Committee (SRC) will evaluate students synopses. The scientists from various IITs,
IISc, BARC, TIFR, etc. are part of SRC. The SRC reviews all the synopses received for participation and
selects the most promising ones. Short-listed synopses will be invited to participate at the National
Fair.

Student can also participate through various afliated science fairs in the country (Navodya Vidyalaya
Samiti, CBSE, National Childrens Science Congress, etc.) .

Projects will be selected from these Science Fairs based on IRIS judging criteria. These projects must
be research based projects and simple models of existing scientic mechanisms or principles will not
be considered.

The projects selected from the Afliated Fairs together with the short-listed direct entry projects
participate at the IRIS National Fair.

National Fair: At the National Fair upto 8 projects (5 individual & 3 team projects) from Category II
will be declared as National Winners. From these, 6 projects (4 individual & 2 team projects) will be
selected to present India at ISEF. The cost of participation at ISEF for the projects selected by SRC will
be borne by IRIS.

Coaching Camps: The winners of National Fair undergo 2 coaching sessions with the scientists to gear
up for their participation at the International level. At the end of second coaching camp, the SRC will
short list and announce 6 projects (4 individual and 2 team projects) that are nally selected for ISEF
participation.
