Glossary terms

Word processing
Alignment: arranging data to line up on a line for a required format on the computer/ in a
document.
Blocked paragraph: Written as an independent unit to allow no loss of coherentism
Bullets: List made with the bullets. Each bullet includes an important piece of text or key items
Business Letter B2B, B2C: B2B is short for business to business and B2C is Business to
consumer. B2B is when the products and services are marketed to other businesses. B2C is a
shorter cycle of businesses such as house cleaning companies reaching out to consumers.
Drop Down Menu: A drop down menu is used when youre making a document and need more
services. It first displays as a single value, but when you want to drop down the list to see more
options, the list turns into multiple values.
Facsimile (FAX): an exact copy of a document made again.
Font: A specific style and size of words typed. Ex: Abril Fatface and Pacifico
Format: A place in a file to store text
Hanging Paragraph: A paragraph when the first line is set to the left margin and all the other
lines are indented. When all the lines is the paragraph are indented except for the first line.
Hard copy: The printed copy of something written on paper. Not usually the first copy made.
Indented Paragraph: This describes the amount of blank space between a paragraph and the
left or right margins.
Memorandum (memo): A message written mostly in business. A formal written letter.
Menu Bar: A bar usually located at the top of a document. This is where the Drop down menus
are located.
Personal Business Letter: This is a letter written by an individual to a business. This letter
would usually contain a concern or interest in a certain product. A Personal letter however is
only made for family or friends.
Proofreading symbols: Proofreading symbols are used when there was a mistake made. They
are what people use to acknowledge the mistake made.
Smart Art: Smart art is a fast program showing the visual/ graphic representation of the
information you put in. Many layouts are offered.
Soft copy: This is a copy of a document not printed onto a physical object, usually stored on a
computer.
Subscript: A figure, letter or symbol put/written below the line.
Superscript: A figure, letter or symbol put/written above the line
Task Bar: The bar put at the end of a display that supplies quick access to other items
Template: This is a document with some of the assets already put in place for more
convenience
Thesaurus: This is a software tool that provides synonyms for other words typed in
Title bar: The bar usually locate at the very top of the document holding the title of the
document in use.
Tool bar: The horizontal bar located at the top of the document that provides more options and
functions for the document. Usually the bar is shown from icons that lead to further functions.

Widow and Orphan Project: widow is the last line of a paragraph that is located alone at the
top of the next page and the orphan is the first line of a paragraph located alone at the bottom of
the next page
Word Art: This is a gallery of texts and styles in microsoft word that is used to add extra
graphics to a document
Word processing: The production, storage and use of text on a document or computer
Word Wrap: Used to fit all the text in the margins provided. Also used when dividing lines and
changing margins

Databases
Database: Structured set of data that is stored in a computer
Field: Data that has separate parts that can be divided into separate files. Fields of all records
are what forms columns
File: A collection of data or information that has a name. Most or all things stored in a computer
must be filed
Footer: Pieces of text that are located at the bottom of pages. After one is set up, it is
automatically put on all the other pages in the document
Header: Pieces of text that are located at the top of the page. Once on is set up, it is
automatically put on all the other pages in the document.
Record: composed from at least one piece of information. A set of records is what makes a file.

Spreadsheets
Active cell: Rectangular box that highlights the cell in a spreadsheet. Helps identify the feature
that you are working with
Fill handle: Allows the user to extend numbers. Dates. Letters etc.
Formula: Allows people to easily make calculations and find totals of columns etc
Function: This function allows people to carry out specific calculations
Name box: This displays the name of the function that youre using
Workbook: each workbook contains many worksheets. Collection of cells on one single sheet.
This is where you will manipulate and keep data.

Information Technology
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: The painful feeling in hands and/or fingers caused by long periods
of time or repetitive movements. Caused by the compression of a major nerve. This comes
alongside the feeling of tingling, burning, and numbness. Passes through carpal bones and
through flexor tendons
Encryption: The process of turning information into a code. Used mostly to prevent
unauthorized access.
Ergonomics: The study of how efficient people are in their own working environment.
Ethics: Moral things that conduct a person's activity or behavior
Firewall: system made and used to prevent unauthorized access from occurring. You can
implant this to prevent people from accessing a private account.

Hacking: when someone gets unauthorized access to an account that does not belong to them
on a computer.
Information technology: The study or receiving or sending information through technology
Internet: Global computer technology network that allows people to access various forms of
information and communication tools
Intranet: Restricted information network using world wide web network
Local area network: Computer network that links information from other devices within a
building or group of buildings
Musculoskeletal injury: Affects the movement in the human body. Examples include carpal
tunnel syndrome
Stand alone computer: Laptop or desktop computer than can be used on its own without the
need to connect to a local area network
Wide area network: when computers can be connect from far distances. Half a mile or more is
the usual radius.

Computer Terms
Antivirus Software: used to detect as well as demolish computer viruses
Application software: Includes things such as word processors. Applications that are put onto
a computer's software for use.
Arithmetic Software Definition: Part of computer's processor that carries out instructions and
logic operations.
Bit: smallest unit possible on a computer. Used to store data
Byte: Equal to 8 bits. Unit of storage for a computer
Central processing unit (CPU): part of the computer where the operations are controlled and
done
Computer desktop (Windows): Graphical user interface. This is what allows people the the
interaction between the user and operator.
Control unit: Directs operation of the processor. Tells unit how to respond to instructions.
Dialogue Box: tiny space on screen where user is to put information or commands
Directory: folders that contain files. Files is just a more used word for directory.
Gigabyte: Unit of information on computers. Equal to one billion.
Hardware: durable, physical parts of a computer.
Icon: An image on a computer that represents another application or capability. Icon may
sometimes be selected by the operator.
Input devices: devices used for data and control signals. Things such as mouses and
keyboards
Kilobyte: Unit of memory equal to 1,024 bytes
Megabyte: Unit of information roughly equal to one million bytes
Modem: A device for modulation and demolition
Motherboard: holds together the crucial elements of a computer. One of the most important
parts of a computer. Includes the central processing unit.
Operating system: This is what supports the basic functions in the computer.
Output device: Device used to send data from one computer to another device. Output devices
are things such as earphones or speakers.

Peripheral: Device that is operated separately from the Central Processing unit, however is still
attached to it.
Random access memory (RAM): Any memory on the computer that can be accessed
randomly. This is the most common memory found in a computer
Read only memory (ROM): Once something is added, it can't be removed and only seen.
When the computer is off, it still continues to run the memory.
Router: This sends data packets between social networks. Performs traffic directing functions.
Scanner: Captures images from photos, magazines, and posters.
Software: Computer data and instructions. This provides the basic non task specific functions
of the computer.
Storage Device: Used for exporting data files and objects. Can store information for short term
and long term.
Server: the user on the computer has access to the server.
Terabyte: Large unit of information

Electronic Communication
Custom Animation: Usually used with microsoft powerpoint and an animated slideshow
Data Package: Unit of data made into a single package that travels down a network path that is
given. Used in networks.
E-Business: selling goods and services and carrying on other business activities done on the
internet. A company that uses the internet to sell.
Electronic presentation: Displays information in the form of a slide show. Shows mages in a
presentation from online and electronic resources.
Hypertext Markup Language: Set of codes and/or symbols that is inserted in a file that is later
shown to the world wide web.
Internet service provider: Company that provides internet for other people or companies as
well as other related services.
Search Engine: Program that searches for keywords but into the bar
Slide Show Sorter View: A Feature in powerpoint that allows the user to view other slides in
the slideshow in a bar
Transitions: The time from one slide to another. There are different options for what the
transition will be.
Uniform resource Locator (URL): the web address that is entered in the search bar that
specifies the location
Web Browser: Software application for presenting information on the world wide web.
Website: has its own URL. Can be searched on any computer with the world wide web.
World Wide Web: System of internet servers that support special documents and provides links
to other documents as well as videos etc.
