DESIGN OF AN INDUSTRIAL BUILDING

DESIGN PROBLEM # 10.6

A Rectangular Portal Frame has a span of R/60 m, height of R/100 m and
is fixed at the base. The c-c spacing of frame is R/120 m.
The roof dead load is 1000 N/m2 , live load (or minimum snow load) is
950 N/m2, roof wind load is -875 N/m2 and the total of windward and
leeward wind load, assumed to act on the windward side alone, is 1625
N/m2.
The purlins are placed at every 2 m interval on the girder and bracing is
provided for the columns at approximate 2.5 m interval by longitudinal
bracing.
Design the frame assuming the moment of inertia of beam equal to 1.5
times that of the column for initial proportioning.

LOAD COMBINATIONS
ASCE-7-05

The factor of 1.6 W can be replaced with 1.3 W if wind load is

calculated according to some earlier code not considering
the directionality factor.

LOAD COMBINATIONS
SIMPLIFIED LOAD COMBINATIONS
When the loads S, R, H, F, E and T are taken equal to zero and wind loads are taken from previous
codes:
1.4 D
1.2 D + 1.6 L + 0.5 Lr
1.2 D + 1.6 Lr + (L or 0.8W)
1.2 D + 1.3 W + 1.0 L + 0.5 Lr
0.9 D + 1.3 W
LOAD COMBINATIONS TO BE USED

1.2 D + 1.6 L
1.2 D + 0.5 L + 1.3 W
0.9 D + 1.3 W

1.2 WD + 1.6 WL

ANALYSIS OF RIGID PORTAL FRAME

APPROXIMATE ANALYSIS
GRAVITY LOAD ANALYSIS (LRFP FRAME-1 PG:280)
WIND LOAD ANALYSIS (LRFP FRAME-2 PG:281)
The frames are separately solved for various loading and the RESULTS ARE SUPERIMPOSED according to the
possible LOAD COMBINATIONS.
After analysis, the components of a frame may be designed using the routine procedures for member design
as the frame is divided into beams, columns, beam-columns, tensions members and compression members.
