FINANCIAL AID INFORMATION

How do I get FREE MONEY for college?

Beginning October 1 through March 2nd

You must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to get money i.e. scholarships, grants and loans
https://fafsa.ed.gov/

Upon completion of the FAFSA you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR). The SAR will report information from your
application and, if there are no questions or problems with your application, your SAR will report your Expected Family
Contribution (EFC), the number used in determining your eligibility for federal student aid. The results will be sent to you
and the schools that you list on your application.

If it has been more than 4 weeks since you submitted your FAFSA and you have not received any info, call the Federal
Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243. If you applied online, you can check the status of your application
through FAFSA on the web.
What type of FREE MONEY is available?

Federal Pell GrantsIf your EFC is below a certain amount you are eligible for a Federal Pell Grant, assuming you meet all other
eligibility requirements. Grants are financial aid that you dont have to pay back.

Cal Grant A, B and C

Cal Grant A - Helps low and middle income students pay tuition and fees at CSU and UC campuses, Independent

colleges, and some Private Vocational Schools in California.

Cal Grant B - Helps high potential students from disadvantaged or low-income families who otherwise would not be able
to get a post-secondary education.
Cal Grant C - Helps vocationally-oriented students interested in attending vocational or technical programs at all
California Community Colleges, Hospital Schools, selected courses at several Independent Colleges, and a variety of
specialized courses at eligible Proprietary Schools.

Chafee GrantFor current or former foster youth see your counselor for more information.
Middle Class ScholarshipIs a program that provides undergraduate students with family incomes up to $150,000 and a
maximum annual household asset amount of $156,000, a scholarship to attend University of California (UC) or California State
University (CSU) campuses.

Work Study ProgramThe college assigns a job for you that will allow you to earn money to help pay for school.
Local ScholarshipsYou will receive a Senior Scholarship Handbook in October. Look it over and apply to ALL local scholarships
that you are eligible for.

FINANCIAL AID APPLICATION PROCESS

Step 1: Please make sure your name is listed on Student Connect as it appears on your social security card. It is very
important that your birthdate, phone number, and address are correct in student connect because the district uses this
information to match your financial aid information. If the information is not up-to-date this can cause a delay in the
financial aid process.
Step 2: Create a FAFSA ID. You may access and send the FAFSA application between October 1st and March 2nd. The
online address is www.fafsa.ed.gov.
Please gather the following information:
1. Your social security number
2. Your parents social security number
3. Your drivers license number (if you have one)
4. Your alien registration number if you are not a U.S. Citizen
5. Your parents federal tax information or tax returns including IRS W-2 information.
6. Records of your untaxed income, such as child support received, interest income, and veterans noneducation benefits, for you, and for your parents if you are a dependent student.
7. Information on cash; savings and checking account balances; investments, including stocks and bonds and real
estate but not including the home in which you live; and business and farm assets for you, and for your parents if you are
a dependent student.
Cash for College workshops will be on October 20th for students with the last name A-K, December 1st for students
with the last name L-Z and February 16th for make-ups. This is a great workshop to get your questions answered and to
help you properly complete the application. It is well worth your time and you should bring a parent.
You may not send your application in before October 1st.
This application will require you to list at least one college to receive your information. Make sure you list a
California school first; this enables the universitys financial aid department to calculate your Cal Grant award.
After the first school, you may wish to list additional schools in alphabetical order.
You can list up to 10 schools on the online FAFSA. You can add more schools to your FAFSA later.
Keep a copy of your FAFSA ID so that you can re-access your FAFSA application.
Please remember to use an updated e-mail address because you will receive a confirmation of your application.
You will also need to check this information weekly.
Step 3: Upon completion of the FAFSA you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR). If you provide a valid e-mail
address, youll receive an e-mail with instructions on how to access an online copy of your SAR within 3-5 days after your
application is processed. If you don't provide a valid e-mail address on your FAFSA, you will receive either a SAR or a SAR
Acknowledgement in the standard mail. This can take up to 3 weeks. Please print a copy for your records. The SAR will
report information from your application. If there are no problems with your application your SAR will report:
The cost to attend the college
State or Federal aid given (grants)
Loans (you have to pay back)
Your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) (what you or your parents are expected to pay for additional college
cost)
The number used in determining your eligibility for federal student aid.
The results will be sent to you and the schools that you list on your application.
Step 4: If it has been more than 4 weeks since you submitted your application and you have not received any info, call
the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243. If you applied online, you can check the status of your
application through FAFSA on the web.
Step 5: Remember that you can accept or decline student loans or decrease the amount you want to receive.
If you need more help the Federal Student Aid has several helpful videos about the FAFSA application at
