The changes caused by humans on the Earths crust are of such magnitude as to have begun a
new geological age, the so-called Anthropocene, the latest phase of the Quaternary, and this
historical mutation is reflected as much in architecture as in the cities and landscapes of our time.
Arquitectura Viva joins the discussion on this period of transformation, marked by the
sustainability agenda, in its two latest issues, which come as siblings under the titles Change of
Climate and Anthropocene, in that order. Anthropocene explores the paradoxes and potentials
of an epoch marked by human civiization through a long essay by Luis Fernndez-Galiano, titled
Architecture and Life.

Recent years have brought few doubts about the growing importance of heritage issues in
architecture, though dealing with them tends to be an ideological and aesthetic minefield,
according to Luis Fernndez-Galiano. Even so, projects involving the metamorphosis of heritage
buildings, from disused industrial sites to outdated public structures, garner a significant amount
of attention. Most interesting are those with a less rigid approach, which consciously embrace the
past by incorporating it into the contemporary project. Featuring OMAs Fondaco dei Tedeschi,
Dominique Perraults Pavilion Dufour, Herzog & de Meurons Park Avenue Armory, and more.

This issue sets its focus on public spaces of all types, dividing 50 recent Japanese projects
across three main categories: open public space (space where anyone can pass through, enter
and exit, or stay as they like), semi-open public space (only those who use the space gather,
enabling open relationships between users to develop), and private public space (places that only
specific people use, and where relationships between people are born). The varied selection
ranges from temples and city plazas to town halls, schools, and even apartments, with works
designed by SANAA, Kengo Kuma, Toyo Ito, Jun Aoki, Shigeru Ban, Akira Sakamoto, and many
more.

"Allborgarrtten" is a newly coined concept that promises to be the urban equivalent of the rural,
traditional Swedish "allemansrtten" everyman's right to roam freely in nature. The rural right is
one most Swedes know by heart, even though they now live in cities. Through the Nordic lens,
Jan Rydn explores themes like the right to the city, national identity and connects it to a larger
global discourse. Along with this verbal exploration Rydn has created a series of pictograms, a
pictorial grammar of sorts, which follows its own poetic logic.

Architectural details are typically communicated through technical drawings, and from such
drawings details are archived, revised, and appropriated. This book presents case studies of the
technical constitution and construction of thirteen exemplary buildings realised in seven countries
over the past fifteen years. Through an investigative matrix of scaled drawings and analytical
texts, the fundamental importance of the detail is discovered afresh, giving insight into the
technical complexities behind the often dynamic simplicity of the buildings final form. Including
interviews with Zaha Hadid, Eric Owen Moss, Kazuyo Sejima, Thom Mayne, Ada Tolla, Steven
Holl, Carme Pins, more.

Active since the early 1990s, architect Katsuhiro Miyamoto decided at some point in his career to
return home to Hyogo, from where his office currently bases its operations. Choosing to embrace
Japans periphery over its centre, he has developed ways to combine two sets of expectations.
This weighty monograph contains many of his projects in the provinces beyond the capital,
presenting carefully crafted solutions to limited space and strict budgets, and challenging
concepts for competitions. According to a critical essay by Dana Buntrock, nature has a place in
his buildings, but in an offhand way. This is the comprehensive guide to Miyamotos vision and
practice.

Moduli 225 is a modular timber frame system for holiday homes developed from 1968 to 1974 by
the Finnish architects Kristian Gullichsen and Juhani Pallasmaa. Through the use of prefabricated
standard elements, the system allowed anyone to construct a building of high aesthetic quality in
a flexible and modifiable way by combining components according to their personal preferences.
Through the Moduli system, the industrial serial production of components was successfully
combined with freedom of choice, individuality, proportional harmony, and modernist expression.
The simple standard shape and geometry and the humane scale and harmony of proportion of
Moduli all represent universal aesthetics.

Philip Anne Warners, referred to as F.A. Warners, was a Dutch architect whose career began in
the early 20th century and coincided with the rise of the Amsterdam School. This expressive
style, which had its heyday between 1911 and 1925, greatly impacted the outgrowth of
Amsterdams urban footprint to the south and west of the city centre. Due to his friendship with
Piet Kramer, one of its foremost proponents, Warners applied the style in his designs for
luxurious apartment buildings and flats. Annet Pasveer recounts a detailed history of the life and
work of Warners, whose buildings and interiors have been magnificently photographed for this
book by Arjan Bronkhorst.

ARCHITECTURE
This book is about buildings and their surroundings, what they mean for those who use them, the
intended atmosphere they create, and what remains of that today. It features works by Dutch
architect and urbanist Kees Rijnboutt, who has been active since 1964 until today, combining new
colour photographs with older black-and-white images. Over the years, some buildings were
altered, while others seem barely changed. In considering Rijnboutts oeuvre, parallels can be
drawn with the history of architecture in the Netherlands over the last 50 years. As the
responsibility and meaning of architecture has adapted to a changing society, so, too, is it
reflected in the work of Rijnboutt.

When 'Volume' started as "magazine to go beyond architecture" in 2005, the world was a different
one. There was a lot of attention for the spectacular in architecture, for instance, and little for
where society was going in relation to architecture: the urgencies and opportunities architecture
could and should engage with. Since, Volume explored a wide variety of topics and terrains, each
time looking for the added value of architecture. So, what is the situation today? in this issue
'Volume' focuses on current dilemmas (young) architects are confronted with, both in education
and in setting up their office. Its less about going beyond as such, and more about impact and
repercussions.

Since it first edition in 1991, Herman Hertzberger's 'Lessons for Students in Architecture' has
become a classic for students all over the world. In it, the background of his work and the ideas
underlying it are put into words by the architect himself. It presents a broad spectrum of subjects
and designs, with practical experience and evaluation of the use of these buildings serving as a
leitmotif. With more than 750 illustrations, Hertzberger has provided an essential source of
inspiration to everyone involved with the design process.

Compiled by architect Azim A. Aziz, this anthology of mosques is a valuable resource for
architects and cultural historians alike. With profiles of more than 100 mosques, from celebrated
ancient structures like the Dome of the Rock and the Hagia Sophia, or architectural paragons like
the Taj Mahal and the Great Mosque of Djenn in Mali, to lesser known and modern
interpretations of the typology, a spectrum of buildings of all scales is covered. Besides a
glossary of names and terms, the volume touches upon the principles of Islamic architecture,
geometric patterns and calligraphy, and regional styles, and gives a selected history of the
various empires of the world as well.
