UNIT 1: PRESSURE AND THRUST

SOLVED EXAMPLES
1. What are the factors on which buoyant force depends?

Ans) The magnitude of Buoyant force acting on an object immersed in a liquid depends on two factors: -

a. Volume of the solid object immersed in the liquid

b. Density of the liquid in which the object is immersed

2. Explain why it is easier to lift a stone in water than in air?

Ans) It is easier to lift a stone in water than it air because in water an upward thrust i.e. Buoyant force is
acting on a stone whereas in air the buoyant force acting is negligible.

3. Why it is easier to swim in sea water than in river water?

Ans) The density of sea water is greater than that of sea water due to the dissolved salts in sea water. Thus the
upthrust on the swimmer is greater in sea water than in river water. Therefore it is easier to swim in sea water
than in river water.

4. How is pressure distributed in an enclosed fluid?

Ans) When pressure is applied in an enclosed fluid it is transmitted unchanged to every portion of the fluids
and walls on container.

5. State Archimedes principle.

Ans) When a body is immersed fully or partially in a fluid, it experiences an upward force that is equal to the
weight of the fluid displaced by it.

6. A metal ball weighs 5N in air and 4N in water when it is totally immersed. What is the magnitude of
buoyant force acting on it?

Ans) Wair = 5N Wwater = 4N

Loss in weight of body in water = 1N
According to Archimedes principle,
Buoyant force = weight of water displaced
= Loss of weight in water
Therefore Buoyant force = 1N
