Lesson Title: Compare and Contrast


Grade Level: 6
Subject: Language Arts
Curriculum Goal: Compare and contrast texts in different forms or genres (e.g., stories and
poems; historical novels and fantasy stories) in terms of their approaches to similar themes and
topics.
Learning Objectives: SWBAT compare and contrast between two genres of books by creating
a Venn Diagram in Microsoft Word.

Equipment Needed/ Materials:


Microsoft word
Books (Holes, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas)
Computer lab
Word Processor

Lesson Summary:
During our reading time in class, the teacher will give examples of different genres by talking
about different movies and books that are familiar to the students. She will choose obviously
different genres to help the students see the differences. Some examples include the books
listed above, as well as movies like Finding Nemo and March of the Penguins. After this model,
the teacher will model how to make a Venn Diagram by pulling her microsoft word up onto the
projector. The teacher will walk the students through the process of creating two circles that
overlap. The students will fill in the Venn Diagram with a list of books and movies by putting
them into overlapping and separate sections of the diagram.

Integration of Technology: To enhance the process of comparing and contrasting different


books, the students will use their computers to create a Venn Diagram. This will appeal to the
visual learners in the class.
