Lesson Title: Candy Charts

Grade Level: 3rd grade

Subject: Math

Curriculum Goal: Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data
set with several categories. Solve one and two step, how many more and how many less
problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs.

Learning Objectives: SWBAT correctly create a graph in excel based on the data they
collect.

Equipment Needed/Materials:

Candy Hearts (variety of colors), computers with excel,

Lesson Summary:

Children will pour out the candy from the box and count how many there are of each color.
They will put the information into excel and then create a graph to represent the percentage
of each color in the box.

Integration of Technology:

Students will use the computer to create a visual for their findings. They will learn how to
use the chart tool in excel and the SUM functions.
