STONE MOUNTAIN -
TOPS IN GEORGIA

A new fiberglass fabricated roof (53' square),


tops the Aerial Tram Station on Stone Mountain.
Built from EXTREN fiberglass structural shapes,
DURASHIELD building panels and FIBREBOLT
fiberglass studs and nuts, the roof-like structure
conceals a grid that will accommodate 20 antennae mounted on
this concrete structure. Fiberglass serves a three-fold purpose
here. It does not interfere with the radio frequencies, meets the TECHNICAL DATA
structural requirements and also maintains the aesthetically
pleasing looks the park required.

This enormous project was part of the renovation project
Process: Fabrication, Pultrusion and Hand Lay-up
undertaken by Stone Mountain Park for the 1996 Olympics. The
combination visitor and interpretive center for Stone Mountain Materials: EXTREN Series 525 fiberglass
Park, which also serves as the mountaintop station for the Park's reinforced polyester, fire retardant
2,500 foot skylift/tram ride, required a roof encompassing a 53' DURASHIELD 1" fiberglass foam core
x 53' parameter. building panels, white
The fiberglass hip-roof, 16'9" at the peak, used the EXTREN FIBREBOLT fiberglass studs & nuts, 1",
24" I-beam in 40' lengths for ridge members (this is the largest 3/4" and 1/2"
fiberglass structural shape in commercial production). This
enormous project required 64 rafters and 17 columns (10" and 1/2" thick hand lay-up ridge plate and
12" EXTREN fiberglass wide flange beams), and approximately connection angles, various sizes and
130 hand lay-up 1/2" thick connection plates. The fiberglass radiuses
structure was covered with 3,400 lineal feet of 1" white Sizes: 24" x 7-1/2" x 1/2" x 40' long I-beams
DURASHIELD fiberglass building panels. FIBREBOLT 12" x 1/2" Wide flange beam
fiberglass fasteners were used to bolt through the DURASHIELD 10" x 1/2" Wide flange beam
panels all the way through both the top and bottom flanges of the 10" x 2-3/4" x 1/2" Channel
rafters. 1/2" Plate: fabricated 6' tall roof spire
