Book
THE contemplating
is the purchase of his first Home the Home
that perhaps for years has been the goal toward which he has been
working, saving and planning.

To such a person the question of building a Home is of the most

personal and vital character. It is one of the rare opportunities
of a lifetime, involving oftentimes, the investment of the greater part
of one s savings, and it is a question that should be approached in
the most careful and thorough manner.

The inexperienced Home Builder, however is confronted with

many regard to the selection of the Home, the pre
difficulties in
paration of the Plans and the purchasing of Materials which often
result in a Home being built, that falls far short of the "Ideal
Home."

In order to assist you to overcome these difficulties and to

place within reach, the Home of your choice, we have prepared
Plans representing almost every type of modern Home, which you
will find illustrated in the pages of the Catalogue.

A Contrast of Home Building Methods
Former Methods The man who has gone through the exper-
of Home ience of building a Home will realize full well the
Building need for the adoption of better methods in Home
building than those formerly employed and which,
to the person inexperienced in Constructional Problems, or in the
purchasing of Building Materials, have often proved to be an
adventure fraught with unforseen and unexpected difficulties.

It will be admitted very few people are able to properly plan

and design a Home, although a person may have a general idea of
what is required. Homes however, cannot be built from general
ideas, and formerly the prospective builder was obliged to call
upon some outside help, usually an Architect or Builder, for ideas
in Home design. The fees charged by an
Architect $100.00 or more rendered this
course for the person with limited
difficult
means who was therefore obliged to turn his
problem over to the Builder or Contractor.

The average Builder not having

a large
of plans at his disposal would
selection
probably suggest a type of Home that from his standpoint was easy
and economical to build, although it did not embody the ideas in
the mind of the Home builder. The result was usually a com
promise, and a Home was built which bore but little resemblance
to the Ideal Home.

of the unattractive and even ugly Homes which often

Many
mar the beauty of the Countryside, are a standing example of the
lack of artistic method in the Home Construction of former
days.

Further, in regard to materials, the Home

Builder being unable
to obtain all his materials from one source, was obliged
to deal with
various people, pay retail prices, contend with probable delays in
delivery, and oftentimes accept inferior materials.

Home Purchasing Contrast this method with that of the

a Pleasure by the Halliday Company, which simplifies your building
Halliday Method problems and turns the strain of Home purchasing
into a pleasure. It enables you to deal with the
question in the safest and surest mannerwhich is to see the end from
the beginning to know exactly what you want before
;
you start, and to
have the whole detail of construction thoroughly systematized and
definitely agreed upon before a sod is turned.

of HALLIDAY HOMES
The Sectional details on the diagram
make an interesting illustration, showing
very clearly the methods of construction
employed on the Main Floor. Exterior
Walls and Roofs of all Halliday Homes.
This design will be readily understood
by the practical Builder who will see at a
glance the sound principles upon which
Halliday Homes are constructed.
Many of our readers however are not
familiar with the technical details of Home
Building and for their information we give
the following brief summary, so that the
diagram may be easily understood and the
Halliday method of construction readily
appreciated.
FLOORS. When double floors are
used, the sub floor is laid diagonally across
the joists this is covered with a layer of
Building Paper before the finished Floor is
laid. The Hardwood Floor is laid diagonally
to the sub floor and at
right angles with the joists, thus forming a perfectly
level Floor which will not shrink. When Single Floors are used, the board s are
laid at right angles to the
joists.
It is important that Hardwood Floors should not be laid until the rest of the
Building is completed, otherwise they are liable to damage which will rendered it
impossible to obtain the beautiful finish so much desired.

WALL CONSTRUCTION. The Studs are set to 16 inch centres. This

avoids wastage of Lath, the standard The match

Building Paper is then placed on the matching this is a protection against -wind

the weather, a layer of

finish of Bevelled
Siding or Shingle completes the sound construction of the
exterior Walls.
For Homes in Northern Ontario we recommend our Wall Construction
"Zero"

which provides for Lumber Sheathing on both outside and inside of the exterior
Walls, making what is undoubtedly the warmest wall that can be built and provid
ing two air spaces as non-conductors of cold and dampness. The Wall "Zero"

Construction is not regularly specified with our Homes, but we shall always be
pleased to inform any Customer of its extra cost if desired.

In roof construction when Cedar

Shingles are used, the Sheathing
Boards are laid from inch to 2 inches apart so as to permit a circulation of

air. When Asphalt Shingles are used the Roof Boards are nailed close together.
In either case the Boards are covered with a thickness of before Building Paper
the Shingles are laid. This makes a perfectly sound Roof one that will give
coolness in Summer and warmth in Winter.
THESE METHODS OF CONSTRUCTION WHICH ARE RECOGNIZED AS BEING OF THE
HIGHEST STANDARD ARE ADOPTED IN ALL HALLIDAY HOMES.

SPECIFICATIONS
Specifications are of the greatest importance to the Home
Builder as they govern all the essential details of construction and
form an agreement between the owner and the contractor, which
insures adequate attention to every part of the work, in addition to
being a safeguard against extra costs.
With every set of Plans and Bill of Material for a Halliday
Home we furnish complete Detailed Specifications covering
thoroughly the methods of construction, and which, when agreed
upon by the owner and contractor, form a basis of dealings which is
equitable to all concerned.

Space in this Catalogue does not permit of our giving full
