India has emerged as the least expensive foreign destination for university undergraduate
students among a list of 15 countries. Australia, Singapore and US occupy the top three
positions in the expenditure chart for overseas students, according to HSBCs latest survey
The Value of Education: Springboard for success.
The average annual cost, including university fees and living expenditure of an undergraduate
international student in India is $5,642, of which $581 is university fees.
At $42,093 a year, Australia a hugely popular destination for Asian students is the most
expensive option globally, followed by Singapore at $39,229 and US at $36,564. Overseas
students need to spend on an average $35,045 a year for undergraduate studies and living in
the UK, according to the survey.
The comparative yearly costs stand at $12,627 in Brazil, $10,729 in China and $9,460 in case
of Mexico, the survey shows. The report, which surveyed over 4,500 parents in 15 countries
and territories, examines parents attitudes and behaviour towards childrens education around
the world.
Education costs are lower in emerging markets such as India because the state-run
universities are heavily funded by the government and also the cost of living for overseas
students is lower here.
Indian parents perceive the US provides the highest quality of education. About 62 per cent of
Indian parents ranked the US in their top three destinations for quality education, the survey
report shows.
The report also suggests Indian parents with higher incomes are more likely to regard the US
(69 per cent) and the UK (67 per cent) as providing the highest quality education compared
with parents with lower household incomes: US (55 per cent) and UK (40 per cent).
More than four in five (85 per cent) Indian parents would consider sending their child abroad
for a better university education, the survey shows.
Of the surveyed Indian parents, 62 per cent said overseas education leads to international
work experience as an important advantage. It also offers other benefits such as openings to
opportunities in life (48 per cent), instilling confidence (48 per cent), exposure to new ideas
(43 per cent) and income earning potential (42 per cent).

Australia is a land of the unexpected- of vast size, amazing natural wealth, awesome scenery
and exotic plant and animal life. There is the availability of an enormous variety of aboriginal
art in the country- right from traditional paintings, modern screen prints, jewellery
and carvings, to boomerangs, didgeridoos, weapons, ceramics, and recordings of traditional
music.
Studying in Australia offers international students more than academic achievement and a
globally recognised qualification. It is an once-in-a-lifetime experience through which a
student can develop independence, maturity, an understanding of other cultures, and the
ability to see issues from different perspectives. Australian Universities prepare a student to
work in todays global marketplace. This is why several foreign companies recruit directly
from Australian universities and vocational institutes

French higher education is outstanding and covers all areas of knowledge. The flexibility of
French higher education allows you to design an academic itinerary that is perfectly suited to
your goals and background. France has established a name for studies in the field of art and
design.
Academic Year: In France the academic year begins in September or October and ends in May
or June. The exact starting and ending dates vary from institution to institution and from
program to program.
The French educational system is distinguished by the variety of its institutions, each with its
own goals, structure, and admission requirements. They are divided into two broad types:
universities and specialized schools.
Language Ability: Most of the academic programs offered in France are taught in French,
so a prior knowledge of the French language is strongly recommended. Having a good
command of French is one of the best ways you can ensure the success of your stay.
However, in order to attract more international students, French Universities are now
increasingly using English as the medium of instruction specially in areas like management,
engineering, political sciences etc.

As Western Europes richest and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of
the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. Germany has one of the
world's most technologically advanced telecommunications systems. Germany is known for
its engineering studies.
For the international student an important feature of most German universities is that
they do not charge tuition fees. University education in Germany is federally funded
DAAD
Admission procedure: There are two ways by which admission to German universities can
be sought :
Commencement of semester/s
Important deadlines for accepting applications: For Indian students, who mostly wish to
pursue one of the International Degree Programmes (courses conducted in the English
medium), application deadlines are around March of the year in which admissions sought.
You should, however, check the exact dates with the university you are applying to.
Tentative month to know result: Results are usually known by June or July.
Application docket: Students are required to submit the university application form duly
filled up along with authenticated copies of their education and work experience certificates
(as may be required). Applications routed through ASSIST will have to be sent to the ASSIST
office in Germany along with a proof of payment of the ASSIST application-processing fee.
Academic background: German universities have a very high academic standard. Thus,
students who wish to study in Germany also have to have a strong and impressive educational
track record. A students academic background should be related to the field of study he
wishes to pursue in Germany.
ICS-42
Extra curricular activities: There is no harm in sending this type of information however,
you need not if you wish.
Standardized tests: SAT is required for UG Programmes, TOEFL or IELTS scores are also
mandatory, Universities offering PG programmes in Engineering may ask for a GRE score
and those offering MBAs may want a GMAT score. Since the medium of instruction in most
German institutions is English, proficiency in German language is not a necessary criterion
for admission decisions to be made. However, a student is expected to show his proficiency in
the German language for better living. It is imperative that students have at least a basic
knowledge of German.
Cost factor: Living expenses may range between 600 and 750 Euro a month depending on
the universitys location. Metros are more expensive than smaller towns.
Course fee: Germanys state funded universities do not charge any tuition fees as they are
borne by the German taxpayer. A recent ruling passed in the German Supreme Court, says
that individual State Governments are free to decide whether or not they want to introduce
tuition fees. The Federal States are at present extremely undecided on this issue. The fees
range from 35 250 Euros
Cost of living on campus, off-campus: There is not much difference in the cost of living
on or off campus.
Tuition scholarships, fee waivers: Universities have very limited scholarships, which are
offered only to the most brilliant and outstanding students. Other funding organizations like
the DAAD may have something to offer, but their funding possibilities are meant mostly for
Ph.D. and post doctoral studies.
Permitted working hours for extra income: Students are allowed to work off campus for
maximum of 180 half days (four hours of work per day) without obtaining any special permit.
There is no restriction on the number of hours for on campus jobs, which are in some way or
the other related to a students programme of study.
Student visa: Students who are successful and obtain an admission letter from a German
university have to approach the German Embassy or German Consulate, in their vicinity,
along with two complete sets of application papers, the application fee (which is at present
INR 1,100), the letter of admission from the German university, all their original certificates,
a financial proof / statement (which is currently INR 3,50,000), and health certificate. All
students are called for an interview, it takes up to eight weeks to process a visa application,
and results of the application are known only after two months. If a visa is granted, it is
initially valid only for three months. On arrival in Germany, the students will have to visit the
ICS-43
Future prospects: The new German Immigration Law that came into force on January 1,
2005 has to a great extent cut down on the red tape, and made Germany more attractive both
as a place to study as well as a place to work. Students will now be permitted to stay in
Germany for up to 12 months after the completion of their degree to search for suitable
employment.

Studying in India in one of the renowned campuses is not only cost effective but a rewarding
educational experience where you get quality academic inputs along with opportunities for
allround development. It is important to keep the following points in mind while applying
for graduate courses in India:
The courses you apply for must be recognised by the appropriate authority e.g., the degree
courses by the University Grant Commission (UGC), professional / technical courses
by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), medical courses by the
Medical Council of India (MCI), dental courses by the Dental Council of India
(DCI), law courses by the Bar Council of India (BCI) and so on. This is essential
because most postgraduate programmes require that you should a graduate from a
recognised university or possess a recognised qualification.
For B.A., B.Sc and B.Com do not limit yourself to the colleges of Delhi University where
the cut- offs are very high; also apply to renowned colleges in Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore,
Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, etc.
Many colleges have a separate quota for sports and extra curricular activities (ECA)-
go ahead and apply through these quotas, if you are eligible. This year the sports and eca
quota of many Delhi colleges was not filled!
For professional courses like, Design, Engineering, Hotel Management, Law, Medical
Sciences, Mass Communication etc, apply to all the top campuses and appear for the
major state and national level examinations. This will certainly enhance your choices of
getting the right course at the right campus.
For those desirous of continuing their studies in India there are many educational
opportunities available. Those students who are aiming for an academic programme after
class XII and plan to join a professional course after graduation should seek admission to the
best campuses in the country.

A common national test for admission to engineering courses across the country that takes
into account Class XII board marks has been introduced from 2013.
Under the new scheme, all aspirants will have to give two exams - JEE main and JEE
advanced - to be held on the same day. The aspirant's set of scores will decide whether he or
she will be eligible for admission to the premier Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT),
centrally funded institutions like NITs or IIITs or state-funded institutions.
For admission to IITs, students will be shortlisted on the basis of their cumulative score for
Class XII and the main test (50% weightage each). The merit list for the elite institutes will be
decided on the candidate's performance in the advanced test.
The weightage for admission to other institutions will vary. For centrally funded institutions
which include NITs and IIITs, it will be 40% for Class XII board, 30% for the main test and
another 30% for the advanced test: a format that IITs have also agreed to follow.
States will fix weightage for admission to institutions they govern. Class XII marks will be
standardized on percentile basis.
IIT will continue to have academic control over the exam including paper-setting, evaluation
and preparation of merit list.
Even as the process of selection to the IITs would be different from other institutes, the
counselling to IITs and other institutes will be done jointly and allotment of seats will be done
together.
Mode of Examination
The Paper-1 of JEE (Main) will be conducted in two separate modes i.e. Offline (Pen and
Paper Based Examination) mode and Online (Computer Based Examination) mode. The
Paper-2 of JEE (Main) will be conducted only in Pen and Paper based examination mode. A
candidate will opt for either Pen and Paper Based or Computer Based examination modes for
Paper-1 only.

Company Secretaries have been recognised by various enactments as one of the principal
officers of Companies. They act as legal representatives of companies. The knowledge and
training acquired by them make them versatile enough to carry out various functions in the
fields of Finance, Accounts, Legal Administration and Personnel, in addition to their own
responsibilities. Companies having a paid-up share capital of Rs. 2 crore or more are
statutorily required to appoint a full time company secretary (Section 383 - A of the
Companys Act, 1956) who must be a member of the Institute of Company Secretaries of
India (ICSI), a professional body constituted under the Company Secretaries Act, 1980.
Moreover, the enactment of the Companies Amendment Act 2000 makes it mandatory for
companies which have a paid up capital of Rs. 10 lakh or more to file with the Registrar, a
compliance certificate signed by a CS, thus opening more avenues for company secretaries.
All companies which seek listing on the National Stock Exchange (NSE/Bombay Stock

According to Swarup Roy, an accountant and a final year student of Cost and Works
Accountancy : In the present era of cut throat competition, where market dominance is the
key to success, where our industries have to compete with the global giants, and when the
world is gradually turning into a global village, profitability has to be maintained through
decreased costs and not by increasing prices. Efficiency at all levels is required, hence the
importance of Costing and Cost Accounting.
Whereas in Chartered Accountancy, we study all aspects of accounting, Cost and Works
Accountants specialize in accounting for costs. While financial audits and tax audits are only
performed by Chartered Accountants, both Chartered Accountants and Cost Accountants are
authorized by law to perform cost audits. However, there is a proposal for Cost Accountants
to perform financial audits as well.

City of Diverse Cultures, The Garden City, The Fun City and City for the Arts - these are
some of the names given to Singapore. Singapore expresses the essence of today's New Asia:
a vibrant, multi-cultural, cosmopolitan, sophisticated city-state where tradition and
modernity, East and West, meet and mingle most agreeably and harmoniously.
The arts are part of the Singaporean lifestyle. With its cosmopolitan character and
international network, Singapore has become a global city for the arts - in fine arts and
antique dealing, auctioneering, exhibitions as well as the staging of world class musicals,
theatre productions, mega concerts, and music and dance performances.
Over the years, Singapore has evolved from its traditional British-based education system to
one that endeavours to meet the needs of individuals and seeks to nurture talents. The strength
of Singapore's Education system lies in its bilingual policy (English with Malay/ Mandarin/
Tamil) and a broad-based curriculum where innovation and entrepreneurship command a
premium. Individuals acquire the relevant skills and abilities to survive in competitive
environments, equipped for a brighter future.
