METHOD STATEMENT FOR CERAMIC TILE WORKS

Project : P250 Date : October 8, 2003

Location : Sector W-34, Plot P-1

A. Scope of Works

The purpose of this method statement is to identify and describe the sequence of
activities required for fixing Ceramic Tiles at designated walls / Floors and
protection of the works during and after completing installation.

C. Preparations

1. Confirm approved shop drawings are available at site.


2. Confirm that Walls and Floors to receive Ceramic Tiles have been inspected
for all MEP works with all installations in place and the same have been
approved by the Engineer.
3. Walls:
(i) Confirm that a leveling coat of Plaster to minimum 12 mm thickness have
been applied, sufficient to cover the unevenness of the substrate and to make
walls true vertical and the same have been checked and approved by the
Engineer.
(ii) Confirm that approved Corner Trims (Edge Protection) are available for
installation at all exposed vertical angles of ceramic tiles.
4. Floors in Basement Two:
(i) Confirm that substrates are sufficiently smooth and level.
(ii) Confirm application of VANDEX SUPER in single coat at 1.00 kg / m 2,
extended up to 100 mm on the plastered wall and have been inspected and
approved by the Engineer.
5. Floors in Basement One and above:
(i) Confirm that substrates are sufficiently smooth and level.
(ii) Confirm application of PROOFCOAT LATEX in two coats (2 nd coat
after 24 hours of drying of 1st coat and at right angles) at 1.50 kg / m 2 as per
manufacturers instructions, extended up to 100 mm on the plastered wall.
(iii) Confirm laying 100 microns polyethylene sheet (to protect
waterproofing from damage) after curing of waterproofing.
(iv) Confirm that minimum 24 hours of Flood Test have been carried out at
all waterproofed floor areas (height of water = 50 mm) and have been
inspected and approved by the Engineer.
(v) Confirm mixing of bedding materials thoroughly to a uniform
consistency in a suitable mechanical mixer with minimum amount of water
to give required workability.
6. Confirm all necessary hand tools, mixing paddle, tile adhesive, grout,
Ceramic Tiles [are kept DRY], masonry sand (to BS 1200), cement and
mechanical mixer are available.
7. Confirm sufficient lighting and scaffolding arrangements are made.

D. Ceramic Tile Installation

1. Confirm that preparatory works have been inspected and approved by the
Engineer.
2. Ensure correct tiles are available for the tiling area as per approval.
3. Ensure joints are true to line, continuous and without steps.
4. Ensure joints on walls are truly horizontal, vertical and in alignment round
corners.
5. Ensure joints in walls and floors are aligned.
6. Ensure joint widths of 2 mm are maintained by Plastic Cross Spacers.
7. Confirm that Corner Trims (Edge Protection) are installed to all exposed
vertical angles of ceramic tiles by bedding the trim into tile adhesive.

8. Fixing Tiles on the Walls with Tile Adhesive [ERTO COLLE]:


(i) Confirm that the surface is clean. If dry, the surface shall be moisten
slightly.
(ii) Confirm mixing of 25 kg bag with 6 to 7.5 liters of water by mixing
paddle.
(iii) The mixed paste shall be allowed to rest for 2 to 3 minutes prior to use.
(iv) The paste shall be applied evenly on the substrate by a cogged spatula to
a maximum thickness of 6 mm and to an area which can be tiled in 30
minutes.
(v) A thin layer of adhesive shall be applied at the back of tiles.
(vi) Tiles shall be fixed with pressing on the substrate without sliding with
Plastic Cross Spacers around.
(vii) Ensure that steps 1 to 7 are being followed throughout the execution of
works.

9. Fixing Tiles on the floors:


(i) Confirm that wall tiling has been completed.
(ii) Confirm placing the bedding material within two hours of mixing and
up-to 10 mm below the Finished Floor Level and have been leveled properly.
(iii) Ensure the bedding material is hard prior to fixing tiles with cement
grout evenly spread over the mortar bed.
(iv) Ensure that steps 1 to 6 are being followed throughout the execution of
works.

10. Mixing and application of Tile Grout [FAIENJOINT]:


(i) Confirm that a minimum period of 24 hours have elapsed after fixing of
Wall / Floor Tiles.
(ii) Confirm mixing of 5 kg of FAIENJOINT with 1.6 liters of water by
mixing paddle until a uniform, lump-free, thick creamy paste is produced.
(iii) The mixed paste shall be allowed to rest for 10 minutes prior to use and
shall be used within 2 hours of mixing.
(iv) The paste shall be applied with a rubber spatula in-to joints to fill all
gaps.
(v) All the surrounding areas of the joints shall be cleaned after 2 hours of
applying FAIENJOINT with a dry cloth or slightly wet sponge.

E. Protection of Completed Works

Movement of manpower and materials shall be restricted (i.e. kept to a


minimum) during execution of the works.
Maximum care shall be taken to avoid any damage to ongoing and finished
tiling works.

F. Health & Safety

All site personnel shall be briefed as per HSE Project Manual.
