Subsidiary aims:
To stir Ss interest in the new lesson;
To activate Ss prior knowledge about the world
The teacher presents to the Ss the objectives of the lesson and asks them to pay attention to what
will follow. After that, T writes the date, the title and elicits from the students the meaning of the
title. The teacher asks Ss about what books/magazines they like and encourages brief discussion.
4.ACTIVITY 1 (8 min.)
Subsidiary aim:
To practice their reading and comprehension skills
T asks Ss to read About the author and the book (page 32 in studentsbook). She chooses one
pupil to read aloud. Next, T asks them questions about the author.
. Subsidiary aims:
To practice their listening and reading skills
T asks Ss to look at the introduction of Chapter two of John Buchanans book and to listen to the
tape. At the same time, they have to look at exercise 2, page 33 and to try to answer the
questions. After they have listened to the tape, T asks one S to read aloud the question and
another to answer it (pair work).
6.ACTIVITY 3 (5 min.)
Subsidiary aim:
To check if they have paid attention to the text
Ss are asked to look at exercise 3 and to find words and phrases in the text which mean the same
as the following: 1.the search for; 2.planning to kill; 3.murdered; 4.without being seen; 5.dressed
as; 6.walked noisily down; 7.ran quick; 8.didnt have much time.

Ss are asked to listen to two people discussing The Thirty-Nine Steps and answer the following
questions:
1. Who were The Black Stone and why were they dangerous?
2. Where did Hannay first read about the thirty-nine steps?
3. How did Hannay know where to find the steps?
4. Where exactly were the steps? Why were they important?
9.FEEDBACK (2min.): T asks Ss about the lesson and if they have other questions. She
appreciates them orally.
10.HOMEWORK (3min): The students will have to do exercise 5, page 33. T explains them
what they have to do, giving them some examples.
