PRACTICAL NO.

05: DESIGN OF FLANGED BEAM

AIM: To design a flanged beam (T- beam)

APPARATUS
Computer system ( hardware)
Master series application 2010 version (software)

PROCEDURES
i. Open master series application using desktop shortcut
ii. Using the pointer to navigate designer suit, then right click to open
iii. Select master beam: concrete beam designer
iv. Create new folder so as to open the working space
v. Fill all the necessary data for T- beam design such as length, breadth, height,
type of section, dead and live load

Hf

bw

vi. Now fill the beam length as 6m, web width (b w) as 230mm and overall height
of beam (h) as 375mm
vii. In this case, b and hf will be 1200mm and 200mm respectively
viii. then in the type of section select T for rectangular section, then fill the dead
and live load as we did in the previous practicals

ix. You can add several numbers of span according to the plan you have
provided with, remember if you did not provide dimensions of the beam of
the second span, means it will decide the same as the previous span
otherwise you have to provide dimensions for the next span if it is different to
the previous one
x. Then specify the loading factors basing on the code you have used
xi. A single span consist of two support, so if you have two spans means you
need three supports, so specify the length of columns, breadth and width of
column, this must be done for the bottom and top column if any.
xii. Then enter dead and live loads acting on the beam, so enter loading dialogue
box and fill point loads, partially uniform distributed load and varying loads,
remember to specify the distance of acting load from the support.
xiii. Therefore click analyse icon to analyse beam information
xiv. Then click design and select concrete design
xv. In the design dialogue box fill all required information in steel data & beam
design, beam, column level, covers and aggregate, laps & kicks and auto
design then click ok.
xvi. A plan and detailed section of beam will be shown, check the design and
detail of the beam and make sure all the parameters are ok on the calculation
sheet
