She has so many works as producer, composer, singer, player, and, arranger that is very difficult to keep track of every musical piece she made. Yoko Kanno composed music since a very young age. Her early works were based mostly on religious themes. She participated during her childhood in many contests with melodies she created after she analyzed intuitively how melodies were composed. In 1974 she won a prize and Yamaha released two of her piano pieces in the Junior Original Concert ‘74 record, however she learnt to write music years later. Yoko Kanno studied Literature in Waseda University. She made music transcriptions in her college years and understood the real meaning of rhythm.KOEI, a small video game company at the time, approached to Yoko Kanno to compose music for Nobunaga's Ambition. The game turned into a very successful franchise and she made music for other video games. Yoko Kanno jumped into the anime industry when she composed music for Macross Plus. Her hypnotic sounds transported the listener to some kind of dreamland and that feeling in her melodies is still present. Macross Plus was a breakthrough in her career. She made music for many important and iconographic anime series in the 90's like Cowboy Bebop, The Vision of Escaflowne, and, Arjuna. Her music comes from the depths of her soul, rescuing sounds from the chaos of noise to create amazing pieces of art, from rock, to pop, alternative, soul, jazz, funk, symphonic, chamber, and, choral. She has explored many genres, and created a piece for each one of it. Her influences come from classical baroque music composers like Bach to bands like The Beatles or jazz composers like Miles Davis. She has turned into a musical influence herself and a reference to many other musicians. She created a Latin-sounded language called Gablish, the language that gave voice to Kanno’s alter ego, Gabriela Robin, who gave an almost ethereal mood to her music. Yoko Kanno has also launched many artists that grew in the music industry like Maaya Sakamoto, Megumi Nakajima, May'n, Crystal Kay, and many others.She has worked with international musicians like James Wendt, Scott Matthew, Ilaria Graziano, Origa, and worked with different symphonic orchestras in Warsaw, Israel, Prague, and recorded albums in Iceland, London and New York. Yoko Kanno is definitely one of the most important composers in the modern era and her music is a passage to travel among the notes to the land of dreams.
