HOISTING WINCH / OVERHEAD TRAVELING CRANE

Design Conditions: (Based On Static Approach)

3 ice cans / lift .. Capacity

Weight of ice + can .. 15 kg

Hoists velocity, Vf . 0.15 m/sec

Height of Lift 2.0 m

Time of lift, t ...10 sec

Harvesting Grid type

From Design of machine Elements by Faires, pp. 472 and 605

Design Factor, N = 7 for small hoist

Use minimum drum diameter, min. Ds = 30 Dr, in.FC

6 x 19 IPS wire ropes, regular lay

Wr = 1.6 Dr (weight of the rope, lbs/ft)

Lr = 5 m (length of rope)

Total Load, W

W = (15 kg or 33.075lbs) (3) = 99.225 lbs

Wr = 1.6 Dr2 (Lr) = 1.6 Dr2 (5 m)(3.28 ft/min) = 26.24 Dr2

F = ma

Ft Wr W = (Wr + W) (a)/g
But,

a = (Vt Vo) = 0.15 m/sec / 10 sec

a = 0.15 m/sec2 (3.28 ft/m) = 0.0492 ft/sec2

Ft 26.24 Dr2 99.225= (26.24 Dr2 + 99.225) (0.0492)

BASED ON STATIC APPROACH

Fb = Am(Dm)(Ew)

Where:
From Table AT 28, (Design of Machine Elements by Faires, pp. 605)

Fb = equivalent bending load, lbs

Am = area of metal = 0.4 Dr2, in2

Dw = diameter of wire = 0.067 Dr

Ew = 3x107 psi, modulus of elasticity of wire

Ds = drum or sheave diameter = 30 Dr , in

Fb = (0.4 Dr2) ( 0.067 Dr) (12x106)

30 Dr
Fb = 10,720 Dr2

N = Fu Fb

Where:

N = 7 (Design Factor)

Fu = breaking strength = 42 Dr2 (use IPS)

Ft = rope tensile force

ROPE DIAMETER, Dr
Equating Eq. (1) and Eq. (2)
27.055 Dr2 + 99.4 = 10,468.6 Dr2
Dr2= 99.4

FITTINGS FOR WIRE ROPE

From Design of Machine Elements by Faires, page 477, state that: There are a
number of fittings that have been develop fore wire ropes. Hook and open socket
connection for wire rope fitting is commonly used. The wires are separated and spread
into a conical shape in the socket after which zinc is poured in. properly done; this
connection should be a strong as the rope.
