FIRST LESSON: Leviticus 19:1-2, 17-18

And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2 Speak to all the congregation of the
people of Israel and say to them, You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am
holy.
17
You shall not hate your brother in your heart, but you shall reason frankly
with your neighbor, lest you incur sin because of him. 18 You shall not take
vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall
love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.

L The Word of the Lord C Thanks be to God

RESPONSIVE PSALM: Psalm 103:1-13

1
Bless the LORD, O my soul,
and all that is within me, bless his holy name.
2
Bless the LORD, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits.
3
He forgives all your sins
and heals all your infirmities;
4
he redeems your life from the grave
and crowns you with mercy and lovingkindness;
5
he satisfies you with good things,
and your youth is renewed like an eagle's.
6
The LORD executes righteousness
and judgment for all who are oppressed.
7
He made his ways known to Moses
and his works to the children of Israel.
8
The LORD is full of compassion and mercy,
slow to anger and of great kindness.
9
He will not always accuse us,
nor will he keep his anger forever.
10
He has not dealt with us according to our sins,
nor rewarded us according to our wickedness.
11
For as the heavens are high above the earth,
so is his mercy great upon those who fear him.
12
As far as the east is from the west,
so far has he removed our sins from us.
13
As a father cares for his children,
so does the LORD care for those who fear him.

SECOND LESSON: 1 Corinthians 3:10-11, 16-23

10
According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid
a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how
he builds upon it. 11 For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is
laid, which is Jesus Christ.
16
Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in
you? 17 If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's tem-
ple is holy, and you are that temple.
18
Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this
age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this
world is folly with God. For it is written, He catches the wise in their crafti-
ness, 20 and again, The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are fu-
tile. 21 So let no one boast in men. For all things are yours, 22 whether Paul or
Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the futureall
are yours, 23 and you are Christ's, and Christ is God's.

L The Word of the Lord C Thanks be to God

GOSPEL: Matthew 5:38-48

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 5th chapter:

C: Glory to you, O Lord.
38
You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.
39
But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on
the right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40 And if anyone would sue you and
take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. 41 And if anyone forces you to
go one mile, go with him two miles. 42 Give to the one who begs from you, and
do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.
43
You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor and hate
your enemy. 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who
persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For
he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just
and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you
have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only
your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles
do the same? 48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is per-
fect.
P: The Gospel of the Lord

C: Praise to you, O Christ
