Robb (31) and Brienne (29) Stark are looki ng for a new home that

is both causal and inexpensive. Their perfect location is in the

urban mixed buildings down on Main Street in Pittsburg,
Pennsylvania. A great location for a musician and photographer,
and a couple with such an interest in music having access to
numerous venues that host local bands and artist. The
requirements of their new home must include a small powder
room, or full bathroom, living room, din ing room, home office,
music room, 3 bedrooms, laundry along with a built-in storage
piece. Their preference in style is Scandinavian and Modern.

Code Analysis: Part II

For quite some time now there has been this argument of whether or
not requirements of home fire sprinklers should be implemented. Statics show
a sure sign of death prevention with sprinklers but additional costs that come
with them.

Most of the disadvantages when considering residential fire sprinklers

involve cost. Not only are the new installation costly, but also the water
damage of furniture or the building/structure itself.

Generally fire sprinklers have more than enough advantages that would
appeal many homeowners. For one the amount of deaths and injuries reduced
of both residents and firefighters are a plus. And sure the cost of water
damage can be costly but the cost of fire damage can be worse. Having fire
sprinklers can also reduce the cost of your homeowners insurance, but does
vary depending on each state.

When considering new residential construction, fire sprinkler

requirements include a larger service line for sprinklers to take effect. After
that you will need proper implementation either by permitted water utilities or
fire engineering departments. Keep in mind each state has adopted different
requirements and instructions for sprinkler application.

I do feel that all renovations of existing residential buildings should

require sprinklers; however areas that cannot should definitely be provided
with an automatic smoke detector. These systems my cost a bit more for
installations and water damage, but if worst comes to worst families will be
protected and safe from the even more expensive fire damage that can lead
to serious injury and even death.

JUSTIFICATION

When initially starting this project we were given certain parameters

(client and site, style) in order to create a concept, including the resources to
create and tell a design story. My assignment clients were Robb and Brienne
Stark, looking for a Scandinavian modern look in a mixed building on an urban
street. After weeks of developing and changing things Im sure I only have a
fraction of what a real project would look like. My design goals for this project
were to meet all the needs and requirements of the client while also achieving
an efficient and successful flow of spaces.
Given the information for this assignment on our client there were just a
few details describing them and their needs. Everything was based on our own
creative design story. In a more realistic scenario we will be able to gather a lot
more information about our clients in order to create the perfect design theyre
looking for. What I got from this project was that they had a certain style they
were looking for and what rooms were needed. There are so many other
questions and answers we need in order to design an effective space. From my
experience in design, it is a constant learning and developing process. It is
impossible to know what someone is looking for if all they tell is their preference
to a traditional style. Knowing your client in so very important in interior design.
Working on schematic plans are very useful in understand where and
what spaces are more efficient and where theyll essentially be placed. From the
early stages of our project starting with our adjacency matrix to breakdown what
rooms need to be adjacent to one another. Your bubble diagram is where you
can start brainstorming on where the best placement of space will meet the
clients needs. These tools are very effective techniques when showcases the
best layouts possible. At this point of a project there should be a lot of revisions
in order to solidify a concrete design decision.
In this project there was no whole lot of detail around the basis of human
function, and yes all designs should consider this as a general factor in
designing a residence. I think the goal here was focused on design and never
really got too far into functional aspects. Spatial relationships on the other hand
can be relative to the public versus private spaces throughout the home. Also
including appropriate clearance would be a key element when making some
theses design decisions. I can definitely say that a lot of decisions were based on
the space giving and the space needed for each room.
REFLECTION

I can definitely say Ive gained a lot from this course one being time
management. There will always be an allotment of time specified in a project
that needs to be met. Time management is a very important skill needed in this
field. Aside from that there were a few concepts throughout this course that
were great learning experiences and Ill continue to use throughout my studies.
The collection of documentation along the design process is so essential to the
final outcome design. Refining my skills in AutoCAD was also a huge benefit as
well, I feel that Im finally getting used to a lot of the tools and commands
involved in the program. I will continue to develop my skills in this program, as it
will be essential in the rest of my studies and in my future as a designer. Another
concept that I found very important was making sure you stay within the design
parameters of each project. Making sure to dont go out of bounds of the
project guidelines will make or break your partnership with your clients. I did
really enjoy this course and will even refine the work done on this project to add
to my portfolio.
