The paper discusses in detail some common methods in applied linguistics research with a
focus on two major methods: experimental and ethnographic and problems related to applied
linguistic research in Vietnam. The main points of the paper are as follows:

- Fundamental concepts, techniques and differences between the two methods.
- Problems related to applied linguistic research in Vietnam.
