Rock / Obsidian Application Note

v2015-07-09

Viewing Rockhound Data Using Cimarron

This application note describes how to view Rock and Obsidian data in Windows using Cimarron. It uses
the term recorder to refer to both the Rock and Obsidian recorders.

Procedure
This procedure assumes:

- the recorder is set up to include a MiniSeed Format Data Archiver module

- that the module is configured as shown in the following screen shot:

- the recorder is actively recording MSEED data to its storage media

- the local directory structure, described below, is used

First, create the following directories in the desired location, either on your local PC, or a network drive:

- Rock
- Rock\Programs
- Rock\Units
Download the Q330 Software Kit, which includes Cimarron, from the Q330 web site. Extract the
Cimarron executable and the IIR file, and place them in the Rock\Programs directory.

Run Cimarron. The first time you open Cimarron your browser will open with the Cimarron help page
close or minimize it now.

The data must be stored in a specific directory structure so that Cimarron can correctly access it. The
station directories, one per recorder, are created by Cimarron in the Units directory, and must be the
recorders serial number followed by an underscore 1.

In Cimarrons Library Name field, enter the units serial number followed by _1, for example 1234_1.

In the Directory field, enter the path to the station directory, as shown in the figure below:

Press the Create button. The 1234_1 directory, and some subdirectories, will be created. If this is the
first recorder added, the stations.ini file will be created in the Programs directory. Subsequent
recorders will have their station information appended to the file. Press the Close button to close
Cimarron, and answer OK to the error message.

Open the stations.ini file with a text editor such as Notepad. Go to the entry for the recorder just
added, and change the source=dialup string to source=q330. The file should now be similar to the
following:

[1234_1]
desc=
dir=D:\ROCK\UNITS\1234_1\
source=dialup

Save the changes and close the file.

Transfer the date subdirectories (DYYMMDD, such as D150706) and their contents, from the
\data\events directory on the recorder, to the local Data directory for that unit, using FTP. Wait for the
transfer to complete.

Now start Cimarron, select the Station Name just entered, and press the Open button. The main
Cimarron screen opens:
Instructions on how to display the data can be found on pages 128 through 136 of the Q330 Operations
Guide.
