BEYOND-THE-BASIC PRODUCTIVITY TOOLS

Name: Lexie Fuhrman

Grade Level: 5th
Content Area: Science
Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tool Used: Inspiration
Standards Addressed:
S5E1. Students will identify surface features of the Earth caused by constructive and destructive
processes.
a. Identify surface features caused by constructive processes.
Deposition (Deltas, sand dunes, etc.) Earthquakes Volcanoes Faults
b. Identify and find examples of surface features caused by destructive processes.
Erosion (waterrivers and oceans, wind) Weathering Impact of organisms Earthquake
Volcano
c. Relate the role of technology and human intervention in the control of constructive and
destructive processes. Examples include, but are not limited to
Seismological studies, Flood control, (dams, levees, storm drain management, etc.) Beach
reclamation (Georgia coastal islands)

Description of how to implement in the class: The teacher will create a new Inspiration tree graph
to store the classs research on formation of Earths surface features. The teacher will create the main
bubble with the phrase How Earths surface features are made and connect three bubbles to this
main bubble. The teacher will fill in each of the three bubbles with one of the following words:
constructive, destructive, and human intervention. The teacher will ask for some examples of
each and place bubbles with student answers into each respective category. As a class, students will
choose pictures to supplement each answer. Once each of the three sub bubbles has at least 3
categories, the teacher will add a new bubble to the main bubble titled human impact. Students will
then split into groups of three.

Initially each group will be asked to research human impact on Earths surface features. After about
10 minutes of research, students will pick one impact to research in further detail. The teacher will
approve each groups topic to ensure no two groups have the same subject. Students will then add
their own connecting bubble beneath the human impact bubble. One student in the group will define
the impact and how it affects Earths surface features. The other two students will find examples of
this impact to share with the class. After each student has added their bubble to their main impact
bubble, the group will create a presentation using the Inspiration software. Each group will then
present their human impact topic to the class.
Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi): This lesson would be a LoTI 4. The lesson itself is
chosen by the teacher; however, the human impact topics will vary from class to class as each group
chooses their own topic. The students presentations are collaborative within their groups and are
shared with the entire class.
Description of the sample BBPT file provided *: Each group of three students will add their own
bubble to the main human impact bubble and provide a definition and two examples for their
chosen topic. The bubbles will subsequently be put into presentation form and edited by the group
before being shared with the class.
